Nigeria: NUC focuses on ICT in education

National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria, says the reform in the university system would focus on the development of a dynamic and robust infrastructure to support Information and Communication Technology (ICT).< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The commission said ICT was the weakest link in the system. NUC said that some universities like Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) and University of Jos (Unijos) which had advanced ICT facilities, were well ahead of other universities. The focus would be on the development of a clean and updated web site for each university because ICT has a role in statistical generation, NUC said. It said the university website, edu.ng, needed firewall and anti-virus protection, adding that this would be pursued vigorously. ICT development was crucial for e-Learning because it would assist lecturers in teaching and students in learning through Internet, NUC stressed. The commission also said reform would focus on accountability and good governance as well as over-all quality control of programmes at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
