Spelling Champs 2009 by ESPN Star Sports

A national school level competition to find a young spelling genius in the age group of 11 to 14 years called Spelling Champs 2009 has been launched by the ESPN STAR Sports, Asia's leading Sports Broadcaster. The inaugural edition will see young wizards, handpicked by some of the best schools, engage in clash of words. The seven episode series will start from July 08, 2009 only on ESPN on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Rajat Kapoor, the famous television personality, is the host pronouncer of the show.

The show has a panel of Word Commissioners, noted novelist Rana Dasgupta and English language experts from British Council who gave invaluable inputs to the ever inquiring contestants. The format of the show entails eight grueling challenges in a countdown where only one will survive to be crowned the Spelling Champ 2009. Speaking on the occasion, R. C Venkateish, Managing Director, ESPN Software Pvt Ltd explained that the objective of the serial was to encourage reading and improving of spellings amongst school going children. The winner of the ESPN Spelling Champs 2009 walks away with the coveted trophy along with a grand prize of a dream trip to South Africa for the ICC Champions Trophy in October. Runners-up will receive a Wii Sports. The final four contestants get a series of books from publisher Harper Collins. Appreciating their spirit of participation all 52 contestants get a gift pack from Scholastics.
