In a recent development, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to develop nine colleges as centres for excellence in Ahmedabad by granting Rs 1.5 crore to each.

MG Science College has been lucky to top in this list, while the others include PT Sarvajanik college and SPB English Medium College in Surat, LNK College of Education and Sheth Motilal Nayalchand college in Patan, Tolani College of Arts and Science, Adipur; NH Patel College of Education, Anand; JP Shroff Arts College, Valsad, and CN Arts & BD Commerce College in Mehsana.

In addition, according to the UGC, if any of these colleges are bestowed with a A-Plus grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), the college would be able to set up a full-fledged centre for excellence.

This has been done as the UGC aims to encourage higher education institutions like, universities and colleges in the country to strive for excellence in their chosen areas of academic and research work.
