Engineering students to undergo three mandatory internships

In the wake of a lot of IT professions being removed from job recently due to lack of required practical skills, the Government has made it mandatory for students to do at least three internships during their duration of course.

The new rule would turn effective from the commencing academic session 2017-2018. It will be the sole responsibility of all the engineering colleges to ensure all students undergo internship.

According to the statistics of 2015-16, nearly 56 per cent of the engineering graduates remained unemployed.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar, said: “Every student in technical institute should undergo three internships each spanning four to eight weeks before completion of his/her under-graduation course.”

“The responsibility will be on the institute to help students find a suitable industry for the internship.”

As per the data of 2015-16, nearly 56 per cent of the engineering graduates remained unemployed.

Presently, the system of summer internships is being carried out only in reputed engineering colleges.
