Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, has been conferred the Padma Shri 2026, recognising his contributions to science, engineering, research, and higher education.
An alumnus of IIT Madras, Prof. V. Kamakoti completed his postgraduate and doctoral studies in Computer Science and Engineering at the institute before joining its faculty in 2001. Over the past two decades, he has built a reputation as a researcher, academic leader, and advocate for technology-driven innovation. Since taking charge as Director in 2022, he has guided several initiatives in artificial intelligence, research, entrepreneurship, and digital learning.
Congratulating him on the honour, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted Prof. V. Kamakoti’s role in advancing the vision of NEP 2020 and promoting initiatives such as BodhanAI and the Centre of Excellence in AI for Education.
Prof. V. Kamakoti has also been a familiar voice in national discussions on the future of education and technology. At the 30th Elets World Education Summit, organised by Elets Technomedia, he shared insights on innovation, AI, and the evolving role of higher education institutions in preparing learners for a rapidly changing world.
