External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council of the United Republic of Tanzania, in New Delhi on July 19, reaffirming the growing partnership between India and Tanzania. The meeting focused on expanding cooperation across key sectors, including higher education, artificial intelligence (AI), healthcare, digital technology, capacity building, and water supply.
Following the discussions, Jaishankar described the engagement as constructive and forward-looking, highlighting the shared commitment of both nations to deepen collaboration in areas that support economic growth and human development. The leaders explored new opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation and advance development-focused initiatives.
A major point of discussion was the role of the IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus, which has emerged as a significant symbol of educational collaboration between India and Zanzibar. Jaishankar noted that the institution reflects India’s continued support for capacity building and knowledge-sharing initiatives across Africa.
The Zanzibar campus of IIT Madras has gained international attention as the first overseas campus established by an Indian Institute of Technology. The initiative represents a landmark step in India’s efforts to expand global academic partnerships while contributing to skill development and higher education opportunities in the region.
President Mwinyi was recently in Chennai, where he attended the 63rd Convocation Ceremony of IIT Madras as the Chief Guest. During his visit, he highlighted the importance of educational cooperation between India and Zanzibar and acknowledged the role of the IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus in strengthening people-to-people ties and fostering academic excellence.

Welcoming the Zanzibar President to India, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the visit followed President Mwinyi’s successful engagements in Chennai. He emphasised that the visit reflects the steady growth of India–Tanzania relations and the expanding scope of cooperation between the two partners.
The meeting between Jaishankar and President Mwinyi underscores the increasing momentum in India–Tanzania relations, particularly in emerging areas such as AI, digital innovation, healthcare, education, and human resource development. As both countries seek to deepen their strategic partnership, initiatives like the IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus continue to serve as important bridges for collaboration, innovation, and sustainable development.
