The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in India is set for a major change as the paper-based examination format will be discontinued from September 2026. IDP Education has announced that IELTS tests across the country will move completely to a computer-delivered format, marking a significant shift in the way candidates undertake one of the world’s most recognised English proficiency assessments.
Before the transition is fully implemented, candidates who wish to appear for the paper-based IELTS test will have three final opportunities. The last paper-based examinations in India will be conducted on July 25, August 6, and August 22, 2026. After these dates, all IELTS tests will be conducted exclusively through computers.
According to IDP Education, the transition is aimed at creating a more flexible and efficient testing experience for candidates while maintaining the credibility and international standards of the examination. The organisation has clarified that there will be no changes to the IELTS exam pattern, question types, difficulty level, marking system, or overall scoring process.
The duration of the IELTS examination will continue to remain 2 hours and 45 minutes. Candidates will complete the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections on a computer, while the Speaking test will continue to be conducted through a face-to-face interview with a certified IELTS examiner.
The computer-based format is expected to bring several benefits for test-takers. During the Listening section, candidates will use headphones, allowing them to experience clearer audio and improved focus. In the Writing section, typing responses will enable candidates to edit, review, and manage their answers more efficiently before submission.
IDP Education has also assured aspirants that the shift in test delivery will not impact the way candidates are assessed. The evaluation process, score calculation, and international benchmarking standards will remain unchanged, ensuring that results continue to reflect the same level of English proficiency as the paper-based format.

IELTS continues to be one of the most preferred English language tests among students and professionals worldwide. Accepted by more than 11,000 organisations across over 140 countries, the examination is widely used for university admissions, visa applications, immigration processes, and professional registrations in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, United States and Australia
The move towards a fully digital IELTS examination aligns with the growing adoption of technology-based assessments in education. As examination systems worldwide continue to embrace digital platforms, the transition is expected to provide candidates with a faster, more convenient, and technology-driven testing experience without compromising the reliability and recognition associated with IELTS.
