India has taken a significant step towards strengthening academic collaboration with New Zealand by inviting the country’s leading universities to establish campuses in India. The announcement reflects the growing focus on international partnerships in higher education and aligns with the long-term vision outlined in the India-New Zealand Roadmap to 2030.
The invitation was extended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to New Zealand, where both countries reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across education, culture, healthcare, sports, and innovation. The move also supports India’s ongoing efforts to encourage globally recognised universities to establish a presence in the country under its evolving higher education reforms.
Education emerged as a key area of cooperation during the visit. Acknowledging New Zealand’s popularity among Indian students, the Prime Minister said the time is right for leading New Zealand institutions to strengthen their engagement with India by setting up campuses and creating new opportunities for academic exchange, research collaboration, and student mobility.
The visit also witnessed the signing of a Cultural Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding, aimed at promoting stronger ties in areas such as art, cultural heritage, creative industries, and people-to-people exchanges. In addition, both nations agreed to enhance collaboration in healthcare by encouraging knowledge sharing in traditional systems of medicine.
The education initiative forms an important part of the India-New Zealand Roadmap to 2030, a framework designed to deepen bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors over the coming years. The roadmap places particular emphasis on building stronger institutional partnerships, encouraging innovation, and expanding opportunities for students and researchers from both countries.
Beyond education, India and New Zealand also agreed to broaden their sporting partnership through a Joint Action Plan that seeks to promote collaboration across multiple disciplines, extending beyond cricket. The initiative comes as the two countries prepare to commemorate a century of sporting relations in 2026.
