The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is expected to strengthen cooperation in education, professional services and workforce mobility, creating new opportunities for Indian students, professionals and universities.
The agreement aims to make it easier for skilled Indian professionals to work in the UK by improving mobility pathways and supporting the recognition of qualifications. India and the UK are also expected to work towards Mutual Recognition Agreements in professions such as nursing, accountancy and architecture, helping qualified professionals navigate employment opportunities more easily.
The pact provides mobility options for professionals in sectors including information technology, education, consulting and other specialised services. Eligible professionals may be permitted to work in the UK for periods ranging from 90 days to three years, depending on their category and the nature of their assignment.
Higher education is another key area covered by the agreement. UK universities could establish campuses in India, while Indian institutions may explore greater opportunities to expand their presence in the UK. The agreement also encourages cooperation in education technology, digital learning and cross-border education services.

The CETA is also expected to benefit Indian professionals working in the UK through provisions related to social security contributions. Eligible employees on temporary assignments of up to 60 months could be exempted from making contributions to both countries’ social security systems.
With provisions covering professional mobility, qualification recognition, higher education partnerships and digital education, the India-UK CETA is expected to deepen ties between the two countries and create wider opportunities for students, universities and skilled professionals.
