Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the world of work, and higher education must evolve just as quickly to keep pace. Speaking at the Campus to Career Summit 2026, Salil Pande, Founder and CEO of VMock Inc, said universities need to move beyond traditional teaching models and focus on preparing students for careers that will constantly change in the AI era.
Salil noted that students today face growing uncertainty. While AI is reshaping industries and automating routine tasks, many academic programmes continue to prepare learners for roles that are already evolving. As a result, students are increasingly questioning whether their education will lead to sustainable careers.
According to him, the challenge is no longer just about bridging the employability gap. Institutions must continuously redesign their curricula by tracking changes in the global job market rather than relying on outdated academic structures. Skills that are relevant today may become obsolete within a few years, making adaptability more important than ever.
He illustrated this shift with an example from his own company, where the responsibilities of designers, engineers and product managers are beginning to overlap as AI takes over repetitive tasks. Future professionals, he said, will need broader capabilities instead of narrowly defined technical expertise.
He also highlighted the arrival of an AI-native generation. Students entering universities in the coming years will already be comfortable using AI tools, while employers are rapidly integrating AI into their operations. This changing landscape, he explained, requires educational institutions to rethink both curriculum design and career development.
Reflecting on his own education at IIT Kanpur and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, he said the most valuable lessons came not only from the classroom but also from leadership roles, student activities and teamwork. These experiences helped develop qualities that employers continue to value.
He stressed that technical knowledge alone will no longer guarantee career success. Instead, communication, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, problem-solving, resilience and the ability to continuously learn and adapt will become the skills that distinguish professionals in an AI-powered workplace.
