The Kerala government has introduced Digital Square, a technology-driven initiative designed to strengthen digital education in primary schools across the state. Developed by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), the programme forms a key part of the government’s 100-day education action plan and aims to integrate technology into everyday classroom learning from the foundational years.
The initiative was officially launched by General Education Minister N. Samsudheen during a statewide orientation programme held in Malappuram. More than 4,000 headmasters and headmistresses from schools across Kerala’s 14 districts participated in the launch through an interactive video conference.
Digital Square seeks to make classrooms more engaging by combining technology with learning, encouraging students to develop digital skills, creativity, and independent thinking from an early age. The programme also focuses on creating an inclusive learning environment where children can explore technology through interactive and age-appropriate educational tools. Government and aided primary schools equipped with the necessary digital infrastructure will receive a dedicated software package to support classroom activities.
Built entirely on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), the platform includes a range of educational applications along with accessibility features such as audio support for visually impaired students and high-contrast display options for children with special learning needs. Students will have access to learning tools like GCompris, the language-learning platform e-Cube, and creative applications for music, digital art, animation, gaming, and comics, introducing them to emerging digital concepts from the primary level.
Speaking about the initiative, KITE CEO K. Anvar Sadath said the organisation has developed a comprehensive FOSS-based edutainment package that ensures equal access to high-quality digital learning resources. He added that the platform eliminates dependence on commercial software while incorporating built-in digital safety features and content filters to provide a secure online learning environment for children.

Alongside Digital Square, the Kerala government has unveiled several other initiatives under its 100-day education roadmap. These include the Cyber Safety Protocol 2026, which requires schools to establish cyber safety committees to protect students from AI-enabled and online threats, Tharapadham, a digital platform for tracking attendance and learning outcomes, and the School Wiki-thon campaign to promote local knowledge creation through collaborative digital content.
The government has also announced plans to expand Little KITEs IT Clubs to upper primary schools, enabling students to build technology and digital literacy skills at an earlier stage. Through these initiatives, Kerala aims to create a future-ready education ecosystem that combines digital innovation, accessibility, and safe technology adoption in schools.
