
SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) has named renowned academic and management expert Prof. Sougata Ray as its new Vice Chancellor. The appointment marks a significant leadership transition as the university strengthens its focus on academic excellence, innovation and global engagement.
Prof. Ray joins NMIMS with more than 30 years of experience in higher education, strategic management, entrepreneurship, innovation and corporate governance. Before taking over the new role, he was the Thomas Schmidheiny Chaired Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship Practice and served as the Executive Director of the Thomas Schmidheiny Centre for Family Enterprise at the Indian School of Business (ISB).
Prior to his tenure at ISB, Prof. Ray spent several years at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta, where he held multiple academic and administrative positions. His responsibilities included serving as Professor of Strategic Management, Dean, and a Member of the Board of Governors, contributing to the institution’s academic and strategic development.
Beyond academia, Prof. Ray has also gained industry experience. He previously led the Innovation Lab at Infosys Technologies as General Manager and has worked closely with businesses and public sector organisations, advising them on areas such as strategy formulation, corporate governance, innovation and digital transformation.
An alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and IIEST Shibpur, Prof. Ray has built an extensive academic portfolio focused on strategy, entrepreneurship, digital transformation, innovation and family business management. Over the course of his career, he has published nearly 200 research papers, books, case studies and scholarly articles, while also contributing to the growth and development of institutions including IIM Indore, IIM Calcutta and ISB.

Welcoming the appointment, NMIMS Chancellor Amrish R. Patel said the university looks forward to benefiting from Prof. Ray’s academic expertise, leadership capabilities and extensive institutional experience. He expressed confidence that the new Vice Chancellor would play a key role in advancing NMIMS’ vision of becoming a globally recognised institution for higher education, research and innovation.
With Prof. Ray at the helm, NMIMS is expected to further strengthen its academic ecosystem, promote research-driven learning and enhance collaborations with industry and global institutions, reinforcing its position among India’s leading private universities.
