The Ministry of Education has appointed Prof. Anurag Misra, a Professor of Civil Engineering at IIT Jammu, as the new Director of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, ending a vacancy that had continued for more than two years.
The appointment was approved by the President of India, acting as the Visitor of the National Institutes of Technology, according to an order issued by the Department of Higher Education on July 29. Prof Misra will serve a five-year term from the date he assumes office or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first.
The ministry has directed IIT Jammu to relieve Prof Misra at the earliest so he can take charge at NIT Srinagar. It has also instructed the institute’s Director-in-Charge, Prof. Binod Kanaujia, to hand over administrative responsibilities to the newly appointed Director.

NIT Srinagar had been operating without a full-time Director since 2023, when the previous appointee stepped down after serving only eight months and returned to his parent institution due to administrative reasons. Since then, the institute has been managed under interim leadership.
The issue was also raised in Parliament, where the Centre confirmed that a Search-cum-Selection Committee had completed the recruitment process under the provisions of the NITSER Act, 2007. With Prof Misra’s appointment, NIT Srinagar is expected to gain stable academic and administrative leadership for the coming years.
