Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar has urged higher education institutions to embrace the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasising that future-ready education should promote innovation, research, interdisciplinary learning, and entrepreneurship. Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the RVS Group of Institutions in Coimbatore, he said the country’s education system must evolve to prepare students for emerging opportunities instead of relying on conventional teaching practices.
According to the Governor, NEP 2020 has been designed to give students the flexibility to pursue subjects beyond their core discipline, allowing them to combine fields such as engineering, arts, commerce, or music based on their interests and abilities. He said this integrated learning model will help produce well-rounded graduates equipped with diverse skills.
Rajendra Arlekar also reflected on India’s educational journey after Independence, observing that the nation continued to follow a framework inherited from the colonial era for many years. He noted that the committee led by eminent scientist Dr. K. Kasturirangan developed the National Education Policy with the objective of creating an education system that encourages independent thinking, creativity, and excellence across disciplines.

Expressing concern over examination-oriented learning, the Governor said academic success should not be measured solely by a student’s ability to memorise information. Instead, he called for universities and colleges to strengthen research culture, innovation, and practical learning so students can develop analytical skills and contribute original ideas.
He further stressed that India’s traditional knowledge systems and modern digital technologies should complement each other in shaping the future of education. Highlighting the importance of entrepreneurship, Arlekar encouraged educational institutions to establish robust incubation centres and entrepreneurship development programmes, saying graduates should be empowered to become employment generators who drive innovation and economic growth rather than simply entering the job market as job seekers.
