The University Grants Commission (UGC) has instructed Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across India to identify and incorporate suitable SWAYAM Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) into their academic curriculum for the July 2026 semester. The directive also requires universities and colleges to ensure that eligible students register for these online courses within the deadlines prescribed by the respective national coordinators. The initiative is aimed at expanding access to quality digital education while supporting the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages multidisciplinary learning, academic flexibility, and greater student choice.
SWAYAM, the Government of India’s flagship online learning platform, offers a diverse catalogue of courses across disciplines through leading institutions such as UGC, CEC, IGNOU, AICTE, IIM Bangalore, NITTTR, IIT Madras (NPTEL) and other Institutions of National Importance. By enrolling in these courses, students can supplement their regular classroom education while earning academic credits through recognised online programmes.
The UGC reiterated that, under the UGC Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM Regulations, higher education institutions can permit students to earn up to 40 per cent of the credits required in a semester through approved online courses available on the SWAYAM platform. The framework is designed to provide greater academic flexibility, encourage self-paced learning, and improve access to quality educational resources regardless of geographical location.

The Commission has also announced the registration schedule for the July 2026 SWAYAM semester. Students enrolling in courses offered by UGC, CEC, IGNOU, IIM Bangalore, AICTE, NITTTR, and Institutions of National Importance can register until August 31. For NPTEL courses coordinated by IIT Madras, the registration deadlines vary by course duration, with the first set closing on July 27 and the second set remaining open until August 17.
The latest directive reflects the UGC’s continued emphasis on integrating digital learning into mainstream higher education. By encouraging institutions to adopt SWAYAM courses, the Commission aims to enhance learner engagement, improve academic mobility, and equip students with flexible, industry-relevant knowledge in line with India’s evolving higher education landscape.
