The Uttarakhand Government has officially constituted the Uttarakhand Minority Education Authority, replacing the state’s existing Madrasa Board in a move aimed at strengthening oversight and modernising minority educational institutions. With the new authority now in place, all 456 madrasas across the state will be monitored under a structured framework involving both the State and Central Governments.
The newly formed authority will oversee all recognised madrasas operating in Uttarakhand and ensure that they adhere to uniform academic and administrative standards. As part of the reform, these institutions will also be linked with the Uttarakhand Board of School Education, enabling students to receive education aligned with national educational norms and curriculum standards.
According to the state government, the initiative is intended to make minority education more transparent, accountable, and inclusive. The scope of the Authority extends beyond Muslim educational institutions and will also cover institutions run by Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian, and Parsi minority communities, ensuring a common regulatory framework for all.
In a major step towards digital governance, every madrasa in the state has been assigned a UDISE number. Academic and administrative records of these institutions will be uploaded to the Ministry of Education’s digital platform, allowing better monitoring and access to government schemes. Only institutions meeting the prescribed norms will be eligible for benefits under various Central Government programmes.

The Authority has also made official recognition mandatory for all madrasas. While 400 institutions offering education from Classes I to VIII will obtain affiliation through the office of the District Chief Education Officer, the remaining 56 senior madrasas up to Class XII will be affiliated with the Uttarakhand Board of School Education, Ramnagar. The entire recognition process has been made online, and 137 madrasas have already submitted applications. The government says the initiative aims to integrate minority educational institutions into the mainstream by promoting quality and modern education.
