The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that shifting NEET-UG from the current pen-and-paper format to a computer-based test (CBT) is under active consideration. However, a final decision will be taken only after reviewing the recommendations of the Nandan Nilekani-led high-powered task force on examination reforms.
The expert panel was constituted to recommend measures for strengthening the security, transparency and integrity of India’s public examination system. The government said the proposed transition to CBT is part of broader efforts to modernise high-stakes entrance examinations and prevent irregularities.

The matter came up during Supreme Court proceedings related to NEET-UG reforms, where the Centre reiterated that no final decision has been made yet and the future format of the examination will depend on the task force’s recommendations.
