Higher Education Secretary Deepti Gaur Mukherjee has been given the additional charge of Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) by the Ministry of Education.
The additional responsibility took effect on August 12, 2026, and will continue until a regular UGC Chairman is appointed, or until further orders. Mukherjee will continue to serve as Secretary, Department of Higher Education, and as a UGC member during this period.
A 1993-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, Mukherjee was appointed Higher Education Secretary on August 11, succeeding Vineet Joshi. Her appointment followed a recent senior-level bureaucratic reshuffle at the Centre.
With the additional charge, Mukherjee will oversee the UGC’s key responsibilities related to higher education regulation, standards and policy coordination while the government moves towards appointing a regular chairman.
