Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi has reviewed a proposal to continue the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) Scheme for the next five financial years, from 2026-27 to 2030-31.
Joshi chaired a meeting with senior officials of the Ministry of Education to discuss the proposed continuation and key aspects of the scholarship programme. The scheme aims to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections and encourage them to continue their secondary education.
The NMMS Scheme is an important government initiative designed to reduce school dropout rates by providing financial assistance to eligible students. It particularly supports students studying in government, government-aided and local body schools.
During the meeting, officials discussed the future implementation of the scheme and measures to ensure that its benefits continue to reach deserving students across the country. The proposed extension reflects the government’s focus on strengthening access to education and supporting students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

The review comes as the Centre continues to focus on improving educational opportunities and ensuring greater equity in school education. Continued support through scholarship programmes such as NMMS can help students overcome financial barriers and pursue their studies beyond the elementary level.
The proposal will now undergo the required process before a final decision on the continuation of the scheme is taken.
