Telangana saw a decline of 1,969 government schools in 2025-26, while the number of private schools increased by 771, according to UDISE+ data.
Over the past decade, government-school enrollment in the state fell by 8.2%, from around 28.9 lakh students in 2016-17 to 26.5 lakh in 2025-26. In contrast, private-school enrollment rose by 41%, reaching nearly 49.5 lakh students.

Private schools now account for around 64.5% of total student enrollment in Telangana, compared with 53.4% in 2016-17. The trend highlights the growing shift towards private education and the changing landscape of school education in the state.
