The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) 2026-27, giving eligible students additional time to complete their applications. The revised deadline for submitting applications through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is September 30, 2026.
The NMMSS is designed to support academically capable students from economically weaker sections and encourage them to continue their education beyond Class 8. Under the scheme, one lakh fresh scholarships are offered each year to eligible students entering Class 9.
Selected students receive financial assistance of ₹12,000 per year, with the scholarship continuing through Classes 9 to 12, subject to meeting the prescribed renewal conditions. The scheme is intended to reduce school dropouts and help students complete their secondary and higher-secondary education.
The extension provides students who missed the earlier deadline with more time to complete registration and submit their applications. Applicants are required to fulfil the scheme’s eligibility conditions and complete the necessary verification process through the NSP.

The initiative remains an important government intervention for improving access to secondary education among students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. By providing direct financial support, NMMSS seeks to reduce economic barriers and enable meritorious students to remain in education for longer.
The extended deadline also gives schools and authorities additional time to facilitate eligible students through the application and verification process.
