IIT Kharagpur has appointed Prof. T. G. Sitharam, former Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and former Director of IIT Guwahati, as Advisor to the institute.
According to an office order issued by IIT Kharagpur on 24 August 2026, the appointment has come into effect immediately and will remain valid until further orders. Prof. Sitharam also shared the official communication through his LinkedIn account.
The appointment brings an experienced academic administrator and engineering expert into an advisory role at one of India’s leading technical institutions. While the order does not specify his portfolio or detailed responsibilities, his extensive experience in institutional leadership, technical education policy, research and academic administration is expected to support IIT Kharagpur’s strategic and institutional priorities.

Prof. Sitharam served as Chairman of AICTE from December 2022 to December 2025. Before taking charge of the statutory body, he served as Director of IIT Guwahati from July 2019 to December 2022. During his tenure at IIT Guwahati, the institute expanded its interdisciplinary academic and research ecosystem through the establishment of new schools and multidisciplinary centres.
A distinguished civil engineer and academic, Prof. Sitharam has been closely associated with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. His areas of expertise include geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, earthquake engineering and infrastructure development. He earned his master’s degree from IISc and completed his PhD at the University of Waterloo, Canada.
