Jagriti has about 150 readers belonging to varied age groups in Allahabad.

Mukherjee opinionates on global finance at IIM-C international finances conference

The flexibility shown by the Indian economy during the world-wide recession reflects its development on the economic management of the country and the growing competitiveness of our enterprise, said Union Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee at the inaugural session of the Second International Finance Conference organized by the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIMC) in Kolkata on Monday. The overall GDP growth of 8.9 per cent in the first half of 2010-11 takes India back on a high growth path that the economy was negotiating on in the years prior to the crisis. However, concern on inflation remains, he also added. Mentioning that India's growth momentum, to some extent, is affected by the developments in the western world, he said that a faster recovery in the west will benefit all. Referring to the Financial Stability and development Council (FSDC), set up by the government to strengthen and institutionalize the mechanism for maintaining financial stability, the finance minister said that the government will also set up a Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission (FSLRC) to rewrite and clean up the financial sector laws and bring them in line with the requirements of the sector. He said that government has accorded high importance to financial inclusion as it is a key determinant of sustainable and inclusive growth. “The government is committed to provide access to affordable financial services, especially credit and insurance to empower the poor and to enable the unbanked to become vibrant and productive participants in the process of economic growth,” he stated.

Centre locks horns with MCI over CET

The Common Entrance Test (CET) for all MBBS and postgraduate medicine courses in India has resulted in the Union Health Ministry and the Medical Council of India (MCI) being at loggerheads with each other. The MCI had issued a notification recently making the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) mandatory for admission to all medical courses in the country. However, the health ministry had directed the MCI to withdraw the notification immediately. The MCI has now decided to not withdraw the notification, alleging that it had been issued based on the approval by the Supreme Court received on December 14 and the affidavit that had been filed by the ministry in support of the CET. The notification had been published by the MCI on December 21, 2010 that had amended the regulations on graduate and postgraduate medical education. The notification had also introduced the NEET as the only admission requirement for medical courses and added the marks of students in mathematics would also be considered for MBBS admissions besides the prescribed cut-off percentage of NEET marks for various sections of candidates. Meanwhile, Union Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal spoke to the media at Tiruchi in Tamil Nadu and said that the final decision regarding the matter would be taken only after the opinions of all states have been considered.

Nano satellite by SRM students to check GHG

A group of 54 engineering students from Chennai has designed a 10-kg nano satellite to monitor greenhouse gases (GHG) that the Indian space agency is planning to launch in April. The students from the SRM University have been working on the project 'SRMSAT' since 2008. The satellite is being developed under the guidance of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) at a cost of Rs.1Crore. With climate change becoming a cause of serious concern globally, the satellite will monitor GHG – mainly carbon dioxide – in the atmosphere. A grating spectrometer is employed for monitoring earth-based sources and sinks of anthropogenic and natural sources of GHG. “The satellite is scheduled for launch in April this year with ISRO's Megatropics G satellite. We have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the national space agency for the project,” M. Loganathan, former ISRO scientist who is heading the team, told the sources on the sidelines of the ongoing Indian Science Congress at the SRM University campus here.

CAT is out of the kitty

Common Admission Test (CAT) results, which are supposed to release on the 12th of January 2011, are allegedly out on the URL, which revealed the results last year, on the second day of the New Year. It has been alleged that the website may have been hacked, which is reminiscent of what had happened in the year 2004 when the CAT results had been leaked a day ahead of schedule on the website. Another possibility is that the results were being uploaded on the website for test runs and someone from the organization made the results available on the public domain. CAT 2010 Convener Himanshu Rai from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM-L) said that he had no knowledge of how the incident had occurred and added it would not be investigated further. “We had been taking down the servers and will be uploading the results. Whatever happens meanwhile is not of our concern. The results will be available officially on January 12,” he said. Earlier, the CAT has hit the headlines in 2009, when technical glitches kept the all-important examination in news. In 2010, the leaking of results of the test ten days prior to its official declaration date has resulted in much confusion and anxiety among several aspirants who had appeared for the examination last year.
