ACBF and Microsoft partner for capacity building

The African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) and Microsoft met recently to formally sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between their two organisations. The aim of the collaboration is to join their formidable reputations and expertise to help co-ordinate various capacity building programmes across Africa. The target for both the parties is to focus on improvement of the public sector management for effectiveness of service delivery; enhancing national and regional capacity to manage ICT policy formulation and implementation in sub-Saharan Africa; and public sector oriented solutions development, all in line with the strategic orientations of the two organisations.

Both the parties are to, further, identify areas and activities for ICT capacity building and plan for the same. These activities are to be based on the ICT policy and ICT-related training content to benefit both the public sector and NGOs. Concretely, ACBF will look at supporting key institutions that are delivering already established training content based on Microsoft's Schools of Government curriculum. Microsoft enters into the partnership through its Unlimited Potential initiative, which aims to enhance national and regional capacity in Africa through technology, while ACBF already has extensive experience in working on Africa's development programmes, with established regional networks among capacity development partners.

Spainish and Indian Universities to sign pact

A series of agreements are to be signed between the Alliance 4 Universities (A-4U) and universities and research centres in India, to enhance the exchange programmes including the exchange of students, lecturers and researchers. The alliance will take place with Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade of India, Birla Institute of Management Technology, Consortium of National Institutes of Technology of India (Co-NIT) and Jaypee Education System. The subject areas that will be a part of the collaborative agreements would include engineering, technology, biological sciences, economics and the humanities. These agreements will allow Spanish students to complete their education in Indian universities, and vice-versa. It will also promote mobility among lecturers and will facilitate collaboration on research projects between specialists from both countries.


One of the A-4U's objectives is to expand the teaching and research activities of the alliance's institutions internationally. In this regard, India is a strategic area for the internationalisation of Spanish universities. Between November 22 and 27, the A-4U delegation will also be visiting the universities and research centres in New Delhi and Greater Noida, with which it will set up the new agreements. Bontoc, Philippines receives eLibrary connection

An application submitted by Mountain Province State Polytechnic College (MPSPC) was approved by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), for the electronic library (e-lib) connectivity which will allow students, faculty, and staff to have a wider avenue and greater access to the newest trends in the information and communication technology (ICT) industry. This project on e-library connection of the state-run higher education, is the first out of the eleven government funded projects that have been realised this year in connection with its pending application for accreditation of some of its courses.

Dr Nieves A Dacyon, MPSPC president, said the e-library connection is a collaborative project of the National Library of the Philippines, University of the Philippines system, CHEd, Department of Science and Technology (DoST), and the higher education institution based in the province to boost its chances of being the third university in the Cordillera. Provincial, municipal and school officials expressed their gratitude to CHEd Chairperson Patricia Licuanan for selecting MPSPC as a beneficiary of the e-library project, citing that the renewal of the project in the coming years will be beneficial in enhancing the downloading of information to the grassroots level which is one of the major thrusts of the Aquino administration.

Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board to support training of 600 teachers

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has come up with a pilot drive to train 600 teachers in the state of Gujarat. The aim of the initiative was to improve the quality of education and introduce advanced computerised teaching methods in classroom teaching. Under the project, instead of school principals who used to receive such training so far, teachers will undergo classroom reform training.

Known as the 'ICT Blended Design Learning Education Project', the initiative will be implemented during the duration of November 22-27, on experimental basis in 60 schools of three districts — Vadodara, Anand and Surat. From each district, 200 teachers teaching in 9th to 12th standard classrooms have been selected for training which will be conducted in three phases.

Tata Consultancy Services Youth Survey 2010

India's Youth is a group of confident, optimistic, career minded and socially connected individuals, according to the second annual The Web 2.0 Generation survey, conducted by India's largest IT solutions provider, Tata Consultancy Services. TCS polled over 10,000 school going children between the ages of 12-18 in 11 cities across India during 2009-10 to understand the emerging trends amongst this important group. The survey shows that India's youth are more likely to have a mobile phone than not, seamlessly move from fixed to mobile internet, are spending more time online than ever before and have embraced social networks in a uniquely Indian way.

Blackberrys and IIM Kozhikode selected the first ever Young Guns

The search for the smart, confident and creative young professional from all over the country was finally concluded, through intended rounds of competition, today at IIM Kozhikode. Rahul Anand of IIM Ahmedabad was selected as the Blackberrys astute first ever 'Young Guns'. Blackberrys and IIM Kozhikode 'Young Guns' was an initiative to pick the passionate and determined young professional and to identify him / her as a leader of tomorrow, with an ever-prepared attitude to rise above in all situations. Rahul Anand was one of the participants from all over India to pass all the competitive levels and come out with flying colours.

Rahul is a person who is fond of doing imaginative things in the most systematic of ways; his virtues as a responsible team player has contributed to his success as a young gun. Blackberrys Young Guns was recognition of smart confident and creative young leaders of tomorrow. The two day event was held on November 19th & 20th 2010 at IIM- Kozhikode, which tested the creative as well as practical skills, abilities and knowledge of the participants from various management institutes from all over India, through a multitude of tasks. KVS and US foundation sign MoU

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for reinforcement of their relationship. This MOU was a part of the ongoing International Education Week (IEW) celebrations across India. USIEF executive Director Adam J Grotsky and KVS Joint Commissioner OM Prabhakaran signed the MoU for the promotion of educational and cultural exchanges between the two countries.  

Air Force and Navy for IGNOU community college centre

An extension of the Indira Gandhi National Open University's scheme of the community college, which aims to empower individuals by providing educational certification, will take place with the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. It is anticipated that soon a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between the varsity and the two forces which will 'empower the servicemen'. Educational certification will be awarded to the servicemen, recognising the 'in service training' done by them and in turn provide opportunity for a second career option. A similar MoU was signed between IGNOU and the Indian Army earlier, as per which the Army-IGNOU community colleges will function as autonomous bodies conducting examinations.

eStudents equal to classroom peers in studies says a research

A new study indicated that online students perform as well as their regular classroom counterparts. A University of Nebraska study in US examined perceptions and performance of students' in three undergraduate science courses having both online and classroom versions. It was reported that online students did not feel a sense of cohesion, community spirit, trust or interaction, elements that have been shown to foster effective classroom learning.

It was also mentioned that performance of the online and the in-person peers of a particular grade were equivalent to the regular counterparts, in The Journal of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Education. Researchers assembled the data from a survey of more than 250 students enrolled in three different entry-level science courses at a large Midwestern public university. The same instructors taught both versions of each of the courses, according to a Nebraska statement.
