New Education Initiative to Strengthen K-12, Vocational, and Higher Education Linkages in the U.S. and India

On 35th anniversary of US India Business Council, it announced the launch of a new initiative aimed at strengthening institutional linkages between academia, industry and NGOs focusing on the elementary, vocational and higher education sectors in both countries. Online counselling for BEd in Punjab

In order to make admission process more productive and transparent, the Punjab Government decided to conduct a centralised online counseling for B.Ed. Course for the session 2010-11 in the government colleges and affiliated institutions. Education Minister of Punjab Upinderjit Kaur said the online admission process would be entirely transparent, time-saving and economical.

The Minister further said that the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Amritsar would conduct online counseling through the web. She mentioned that the reservation for SC/ST/OBC and other categories would be as per the rules of the Central Government/State government, whichever is applicable. Additionally, she told that a relaxation of five percent marks would be made in favour of SC/ST/OBC and other categories of candidates.

Dec 5 to see qualifying test for Law in India by BCI

Recently, the Bar Council of India announced that it will conduct first ever all India test in December for the law graduates to qualify to become lawyers. This first ever nation-wide test is to consist of 100 multiple choice questions for law graduates who want to enroll as layers. The test will be conducted on December 5, 2010. The test will be held every six months and any person failing in it can reappear, it was reported during the launch of Council's vision statement. There is no bar on taking the test and it will have no grading system. A candidate will either pass or fail in the test. The test will apply to law graduates of the session 2009-10 and will be held in nine languages for which applications will be available between July 15 to September 30.

The test paper would be developed by an expert committee, including former ISRO Chief M G K Menon and a retired Supreme Court judges.

Govt to set up 16 universities, 6 IITs and 19,000 schools across India

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, recently mentioned that the Government of India plans to set up 16 more central universities and six new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country. The other additional priorities include establishment of over 19,000 primary and upper primary schools in the field of education.

The Prime Minister mentioned that his government was making attempts to introduce grading system in schools and interest subsidy on education loans to poor students with parental income less than INR 4.5 lakh per annum, while releasing the United Progressive Alliance's (UPA) annual report card, marking the end of its first year in its second tenure. Prime Minister Singh also described the Right to Education Act as a historic step towards ensuring education in the country and said that his government will work with the states to make it a reality.

New IGNOU campus at Madurai

It is expected that Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will inaugurate a new campus for its regional centre in Madurai on June 7, 2010. The Madurai centre presently covers 17 districts of Tamil Nadu with 12,000 students. The new campus has been established at a cost of Rs 5 crore on a land allotted by the state government of Tamil Nadu.

So far, the present centre has been functioning as regular study and vocational centre and is also active in distributing study material to nine regional centres in India through its own printing office in Coimbatore.

Parliament to see a bill for super regulatory body for education in India

In the monsoon session of Parliament, it was reported that the National Commission on Higher Education & Research (NCHER) Bill is likely to be presented. The NCHER Bill seeks to establish a super regulator body for education in the country. On June 17, 2010, the second draft on NCHER bill is to be presented to the Central Advisory Board on Education (CABE), which is the highest advisory body on education in the country. Once the proposal is finalised, it will be taken to the cabinet.

If the bill is passed, all the professional colleges in the country will be governed by NCHER. Then, it would e required of all the universities and colleges to seek accreditation from NCHER and the bill also proposes to do away with the current practice of voluntary application for accreditation.


CBSE prescribes guidelines for standard 11 admissions

With the introduction of nine-point grading system in class 10 examinations, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a set of guidelines to schools affiliated to it to be followed for admissions to standard 11. The CBSE has given suggestions for the determination of inter-se merit of candidates, based on the calculation of indicative percentae of marks, for the preparation of the admission list. The circular is available on the web site www.cbse.nic.in. The website also provides details on the grading system and on continuous and comprehensive evaluation. The indicative percentage of marks obtained by a candidate can be determined by multiplying the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) by 9.5. Similarly, subject-wise indicative percentage of marks can be determined by multiplying the grade point (GP) for that subject by 9.5.

The CBSE had directed schools to introduce a nine-point grading system in classes IX and X from the second half of the academic year 2009-10, along with the introduction of continuous and comprehensive evaluation. The student's performance is first assessed and recorded using the conventional numerical marking mode and then converted into grades on the basis of pre-determined mark ranges as stipulated by the CBSE.

Everonn partners with Haryana for Computer education

An agreement was signed between Everonn Education worth INR 47 crore with the director, secondary education, the government of Haryana for implementing Comprehensive Computer Education Project (CCEP) in 213 schools in 20 districts across the state. The project is to be carried out for five years under Build Own and Operate (BOO) and Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) models.
