Children to study computer in Ugandan school

In order to fit in this changing world of information communication technology (ICT), Pembroke in Uganda has embarked on equipping and educating its students with a wide range of ICT tools and information sources such as computer software and the Internet to help them in their studies.

Students will be taught how to use the Internet and email, digital cameras, scanners, recording equipment and computer software. Children will be taught how to check the quality of information, learn to filter good from bad and how to present information in a way that suits the need of their audience. It helps them explore and compare the different ways ICT is used in and out of school. Children between the ages of 7 -14 will benefit from the training. Pembroke equips its pupils to use models to make predictions, test them to check their accuracy. The school offers scholarships to its needy students.

Projects Planning by Tamil Nadu medical varsity

An announcement was made by the Vice Chancellor Mayil Vahanan Natarajan of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University recently that they will soon begin fellowship programmes in new sub-specialties. Dr. Natarajan while inaugurating a continuing medical education programme in Paediatric Dermatology hosted by the CHILDS Trust Medical Research Foundation (CTMRF) mentioned that the university has recognised the scope of the sub specialisations in modern medicine and hence has taken the decision of providing more fellowships.

The VC also announced that the varsity was examining another proposal from the institute so that a similar programme could begin on Paediatric Emergency Medicine. The institute is currently pursuing 13 core research projects and had earned recognition from the Department of Science and Technology.

Deployment of elearning infrastructure

Prof. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, Minister of Education, Nigeria, has mentioned of inability to effectively deploy Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in a sustainable manner, despite being aware of its transformational effects. She mentioned that the electronic learning was becoming a common platform for enhancing education delivery all over the world. After receiving the report of the Federal Government Implementation Committee on E- Learning, she spoke in Abuja shortly, describing that Nigeria had not been consistent with use of ICT but assured that e-learning initiative would be among her core areas of concentration in the next few months.

The minister explained that, the initiative would be pursued through Public Private Partnership (PPP) under the guidance of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission to guarantee its sustainability. In a presentation, the chairman of the Implementation Committee and Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Education Research and Development Council (NERDC), Prof. Godswill Obioma, highlighted the Implementation strategies of the initiative as contained in the report submitted to the minister.

Tech education for Delhi slum children by Intel and Navjyoti

For launch of Intel Learn programme at the foundation's community outreach centre in the slum resettlement colony in outskirts of Delhi, Intel partnered with Navjyoti India Foundation. The Intel Learn programme is to help youth develop 21st century skills, with focus on digital literacy, critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration. The collaboration was initiated with the training of 17 community staffs from Navjyoti Community Centre who were trained in technology and community curriculum module. All the children enrolled for the Intel Learn Program are first generation technology and information and communication technology (ICT) learners.


SSLC exam online results online in Kerela

Inclusive of the Kerala government's IT@School initiative, it has been reported that the results of Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations will be made available online @ Results.ITSchool.gov.in. The initiative is an effort to help all the 4.60 lakh students who appeared in the examination this year, to access their results online by submitting their registration numbers on the website.

The Executive Director, IT@School Project, K Anvar Sadath, mentioned that accessing the SSLC exam result through the website won't be a painful experience this year as the project equips a special content delivery network (CDN) system to push the content faster.

UGC to develop toxic waste disposal guidelines, suggests Sibal

The Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) Kapil Sibal, asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday to develop rules and guidelines for obtainment, usage and disposal of unsafe substances by universities. The HRD minister took this step to prevent incidents such as the recent radioactive poisoning of scrap dealers in Mayapuri from happening again. A meeting took place between UGC Chairman Sukhadeo Thorat and Sibal recently to discuss the guidelines that should be developed for the methods of procuring, handling, storing and disposing off material that can be potentially harmful.

A set of guidelines have been framed by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) regarding how universities should store, use, handle and dispose such substances but the UGC does not have a policy regarding the matter.


Online French learning through Hindi

IT Awards Business Systems Transformation Project to HCL

An announcement was made recently, by Melbourne regarding signing of a deal with HCL Technologies Ltd. (HCL), a leading global IT services provider, to support its Integrated Web Services (IWS) business transformation project. Supporting IWS, HCL is one of the partners of Melbourne IT. IWS, is a three year, US$18 million IT integration project which will allow Melbourne IT to fully leverage the value of the company's customer base by enabling the business to sell customers the full suite of services across business units and geographies.

Melbourne IT is to be provided by the project, improved revenue realisation through stronger billing processes and deliver productivity, efficiency and cost savings benefits by enforcing process consistency and reducing the number of systems requiring IT support. As part of the IWS project, Melbourne IT and HCL Technologies will also work closely with Oracle to implement a unified financial management system to improve billing processes across the company. The IWS project is now underway and is expected to be completed in 2012.
