Global publishers eye India to outsource e-Publishing projects

According to Mr A. Elangovan, Managing Director of Cadgraf Digitals, India is all set to emerge as a hub of e-Publishing because several global publishers such as Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Prentice Hall, Macmillan, and Pearson are eyeing at India for outsourcing their e-Publishing projects. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

He said that the Indian companies in the e-Publishing space are currently working on books and journals for overseas clients. The process the Indian publishers fallow is completely different from others. He said that Indian e-Publishing houses are able to meet the clients' requirements. While the opportunity is tremendous, the hunt is for trained manpower. There is no formal educational institute on digital publishing. People are trained by companies. Only in the last few years have Indian companies forayed into copyediting and the orders are really heavy. One of the major concerns for the industry is getting the right, quality manpower

ICT-Based Distance Education Project Launched in Ghana

ICT- based distance education project was launched in Legon by The University of Ghana to serve as an e-learning hub for distance education students within and outside Ghana who enroll at the University.The purpose of the project is to improve the quality of teaching, learning and increase access to the university programmes by transforming existing print-mode distance education programme of the university to an ICT-based version. To make learning easier for the students the project also aims to develop suitable and modern ICT (hardware, software, networking) tools. The university was pursuing the ICT based distance education project to support governments efforts in increasing access and quality in tertiary education.

“It is indeed a global challenge to make higher education widely accessible and cost-effective, while maintaining quality in the face of the growing demand,” The Minister for education added. According to the minister the deployment of ICT would replace and transform the traditional memory based learning into education that stimulates thinking and creativity necessary to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Developing countries have witnessed that these technologies have an enormous potential for knowledge dissemination, knowledge acquisition, effective learning and the development of more efficient education services. The overall policy goal for integrating ICT into education was to enable graduates from Ghanaian educational institutions, formal and non-formal to confidently and creatively use ICT tools and resources to develop the requisite skills and knowledge needed to be active participants in the global knowledge economy by 2015. Ministry of Education was working towards providing a common network platform for an e-education infrastructure which will provide facilities for the internet services to be put in place for the use of all institutions.

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Wenzhe YU, has said that the Chinese government is supporting the project with a concessional loan of US $8.5 million and that the implementing institution Tsinghua Unispendor Corporation Ltd of Tsinghua University is also from China. The project running in Ghana was in line with some of the decisions made by China at the recent Forum on China-Africa in Egypt last month, which included the expansion of its training and scholarship programmes to Africa.Ambassador Wenzu YU admitted that with an enhanced commitment to electronic education, greater and better teaching and learning opportunities would be opened to lift the fortunes of Ghana's educational system to a new and higher pedestal. He urged all Ghanaians to embrace and support the project because it will positively impact on human resource development and for that matter country as whole.


Women Empowerment in focus in Jamia

In the era of globalization, 'Empowerment of Women' has become one of the most important tools in the development of a nation. Owing to this view, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) will organize a two-day conference on 'Women of SAARC: Partners in Development' on March 30, 2009. The conference will focus on empowering the women of eight countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is also the founder of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, will deliver the inaugural speech at the seminar commencing on March 30.

The goal of the conference is to enhance cooperation and form partnerships among various groups in South Asia for the upliftment of women in the areas of education, environment, livelihoods, literature, health, crafts and law. Four centers of Jamia will organize the event: the Academy of Third World Studies, Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women's Studies and Outreach Programme. SAARC's literature and writers will be its external partner. 'Despite the illiteracy and poverty, women of this region have contributed immensely to the growth and development of the nation,' said Prof. Janki Ranjan of the Department of Education at Jamia and Head of the Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women's Studies. She explained, 'SAARC countries have often adopted the Gandhian way to fight. Now its time to highlight the role of women in the nation building.'

ETH to bring ICT revolution

Pune City-based ETH Research Lab will bring information and communication technology (ICT)- based education to 10,000 schools across the country over the next three years. With the help of computer or television, the students can directly access the lectures of experts and can interact with them. The chairman of ETH Research Lab Dr Vijay Bhatkar revealed this in a press conference on Tuesday. He said that the project was already going on in 1,000 schools and is running successfully. 'All types of schools – private, aided and even rural schools can be part of the project,' he said.

The project is aimed at bringing transformation in the education sector. 'ICT can improve value addition. The experts can directly talk to students through video conferencing. Schools which face shortage of teachers, can teach through ICT-based facility,' he said. Bhatkar said that the company was also ready with a software called digital home. 'Exclusively for women, it will have information about home finance, domestic issues and even content related to childcare. The information such as how to get a gas connection will also be included,' he said. Besides these two projects, the ETH is also planning a range of innovative products such as Digital Campus, which is a comprehensive ERP for colleges, schools and universities and Digital Nterprise which is an ERP for the SMEs and an innovation portal pertaining to useful information. The products will be officially announced on March 27, the 10th foundation day of the company.

Lina Ashar receives Lifetime Achievement Award for Educational Excellence

The Indian Economic Development and Research Association (IEDRA) conferred Lina Ashar, Chairperson of Kangaroo Kids Education Limited, with the 'Lifetime Achievement Award for Educational Excellence' at the National Seminar and Awards function on 'National Economic Growth and World Peace', in Delhi. Lina was felicitated for her pivotal contribution and pioneering role in redefining the K12 segment.

Joginder Singh, ex-Director CBI, Krishnamoorty, Ex-Election Commissioner, and O.P Verma, Ex-Justice-Supreme Court graced the occasion to present the award to Lina Ashar. On the occasion Lina Ashar said 'We are absolutely delighted at receiving this award. This award has a special meaning to me and my team as this kind of recognition only reinforces our resolve to work harder. We wish to break the boundaries that restrict a lot of children from getting a full and fair education.'  This recognition is another feather in her cap. Recently, Education World magazine recognized her as one of the top leaders redefining Indian education. This award is a testimony to Lina Ashar's vision to develop every child holistically, prepare them to adapt to changing circumstances and empower them to deal with life's challenges in a mature and persevering manner.

Secondary School dropouts to end from 2020

 

Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal has said that the government aims to end dropouts from secondary school education from 2020. 50% students drop out of the secondary level school education in India. The target is to ensure 100% retention in secondary level by 2020.

According to the minister the government would be seeking the help of states, civil society and private organisations to improve the state of affairs.


$25 million to be raised by Edserv for expansion

EdServ Software has announced its plan of raising to raise $25 million through Global Depository Receipts or Foreign Currency Convertible Bonds. The education and the placement company EdServe plans the former to fund its expansion in the school and online tuition services markets. EdServ Softsystems Chairman and CEO S Giridharan mentioned that the funds shall be utilised for expansion in the schools segment, online tuition services market, content development and infrastructure expansion. He added, that the Chennai-based firm will also use the funds for expanding its presence in the higher education and career placement segments. The fund-raising process is subject to shareholders approval at the EGM (Extra-Ordinary General meeting) to be held in Chennai on January 11, 2010. EdServ wants to extend its presence to 250 schools over the next 12-18 months from the current 50 schools.

Top NRI brains at IIT Gandhinagar

The newly opened IIT-Gandhinagar received nearly half of the 700-odd applications for faculty positions from NRIs, teaching in premiere universities all over the world. It was reported by the Director of IIT-Gandhinagar, Sudhir Kumar Jain, that at least three NRIs teaching in prestigious universities in the US and Singapore will join them by the end of December. The institute has received over 300 applications from NRIs teaching in universities across UK, US, Europe, Japan, Israel, South Korea, Canada and Singapore for teaching positions.

The three faculty members who are expected to join by December include Sameer Dalvi who specialises in solid-solid reaction and phase equilibrium. Dalvi, who did his PhD from IIT-Bombay, currently teaches in Columbia University. Sriram Kanvah too has a PhD from IIT-Bombay and specialises in bio-organic chemistry. The third faculty to join is Surendra Ranganath who completed his doctorate from University of California, specialises in digital image and signal processing and currently teaches at National University of Singapore. A large number of senior faculties, who have retired from IIT-Bombay are also expected to join IIT-Gandhinagar. The NRIs are attracted for reasons of stable economy, despite battle with recession and the sentiments attached to returning home.

Chaos prevails on day 10 of CAT

It seems that there is still some hope for the students who haven't been able to take CAT 2009 due to technical problems. These students would get another opportunity told Prometric and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) on Monday. They explained that while the main testing window for CAT 2009 closes on Tuesday as scheduled, any registered student who hasn't had an opportunity to complete testing by then will be intimated of a subsequent date and venue for testing over the coming weeks. The trouble was caused by the computer viruses that led to rescheduling of 20,000 students so far and most have subsequently completed their test successfully.

Addressing candidates' concerns that their results may have been affected by viruses which hampered testing, Prometric explained that their ongoing reconciliation processes have verified that there have been no modifications or deletions of the results due to virus attack. Launch of computer-based CAT involved delivery of exams on 17,000 computers in 361 temporary testing labs at 104 centres in 32 cities across India On December 8 (Day 11), the test will be held over one morning session in 20 cities, including Bangalore Over 26,800 candidates completed the test on December 6 Nearly 1.87 lakh candidates completed the test, nine days after it commenced.
