He made the appeal at a brief, but colorful, dedication ceremony of 20 Del desktop computers and accessories donated to the Klo-Agogo Senior High School by Planting Technology International (PTI), at the school premises.

YMAT for MBA students

Keeping in mind the rising costs for an MBA programme, Bangalore-based YGen Management Consulting Services has launched YMAT, a centralised aptitude test for aspirants for management colleges in the country. The test offers a complete end-to-end selection and admission process involving an aptitude test, group discussion and personal interview to be be conducted in a single day. The other tests that students opt for to get into MBA colleges include CAT, MAT, XAT, ATMA to name a few. 'This is a unique concept since students who take the other tests have to spend a lot on coaching, application fees, and travelling to various colleges for admission. YMAT helps in the selection and admission process, thus serving its main goal of cutting costs. We have approached the HRD ministry to make this a national aptitude test,' said Dipankar Choudhury, chief executive officer of YGen.

For just INR 750 (registration cost), students can take YMAT without taking coaching lessons. 'We believe that a graduate has the ability to think logically and thus have the same format as CAT and MAT, wherein the students have to prove themselves in the logical reasoning, general awareness and language ability sections. The students also save costs and the hassles of applying to multiple colleges through YMAT,' added Choudhury. YGen has tied up with 18 colleges across the country including Institute of Business Management and Research (IBMR) in Ahmedabad. For the academic year 2009-11, YMAT will be conducted in 15 region specific centres across North-east, West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat. The test will be conducted on May 31 at YGens's Ahmedabad and Surat centres.

Microsoft’s Partners in Learning to sponsor Innovative Teaching and Learning

Recently, Microsoft Corp. made an announcement that its Partners in Learning program is sponsoring the Innovative Teaching and Learning (ITL) Research project. SRI International is leading the research and will broadly investigate the effects that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has in transforming teaching and learning at the school and education system level. US $1 million will be invested each year by Microsoft in the multiyear longitudinal study in partnership with the governments of Finland, Indonesia, Russia and Senegal.

The main objective of this research is to assess teachers' adoption of innovative classroom teaching practices and the degree to which those practices provide students with personalized learning experiences that promote the skills they will need to work in the 21st century. The research is being guided by outside advisors from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), UNESCO, the World Bank, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and other organizations. This will complement the Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills (ACT21S) research that Microsoft announced on Monday, which focuses primarily on identifying those 21st century skills, and developing ways to measure them by providing new methods of assessing students.

Net supports college students during exams

In the old days, college students might turn to classmates for help during all-night cram sessions before final exams. Now their study buddies are just as likely to be commercial websites with step-by-step solutions to textbook problems, copies of previous exams, reams of lecture notes, summaries of literary classics, and real-time help with physics, math and computer science problems. 'It's a backup,' said Chris O'Connor, a pre-med student at Columbia University who relies on the website Cramster to unravel mysteries of complex math and science problems. 'Many professors who return homework won't tell you how you got it wrong. This way you can complete the feedback process.' But as companies with playful names like Cramster, Course Hero, Koofers and SparkNotes are transforming the way undergraduates like O'Connor study, some professors and ethicists are questioning whether such websites encourage cheating and undermine the mental sweat equity of day-to-day learning by seducing students with ready-made solutions and essays.

On Course Hero, for example, students can type in a college name and course number to unearth the previous semester's particle physics final exam. They can find examples of research papers on, say, the causes of World War I. For homework, Cramster supplies step-by-step solutions to problems in more than 200 college-level math and science textbooks. Course Hero offers three million student-submitted items from 400,000 courses at more than 3,500 institutions, including lecture notes, study guides, presentations and research papers.
