Larger private investment to come up at 20 new IIITs

The 20 new IIITs may come up with larger investment from the private sector and could introduce performance-based salary package for teachers to ensure quality, if a proposal of NASSCOM in this regard is accepted by the government. These new institutes will be set up in Private-public-partnership mode and the software exporters body, National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), has prepared a Detailed Project Report for the purpose.

NASSCOM has proposed that the Indian Institutes of Information Technology be set up with INR 30 crore as initial investment, of which the government's share should not exceed INR 14.9 crore while the share of partnering companies should not be less than INR 15.1 crore. NASSCOM has also proposed that salary of faculty be linked to their output and the institutions have provisions of differential salary package. As per the proposal, the IIITs will be autonomous degree awarding institutions. Each institute will have its own Board of Governors comprising 13 members, including one representative from the government. The government will give a loan of INR 100 crore to each institute with five years moratorium period and repayable within ten years time, explained NASSCOM Vice President Rajdeep Sehrawat.

Honorary Doctorate to Amartya Sen by Cambridge University

Amartya Sen was honored with honorary Doctorate of Letters on Nobel laureate by the University of Cambridge. Working as Professor of Economics and Philosophy, he is currently associated with Harward University. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh conferred the honorary degree on him at the 800th Anniversary Honorary Degree Congregation at the Senate House in Cambridge.

Besides Sen, Bill and Melinda Gates were conferred the honorary Doctor of Laws degree and Prince Karim al-Hussaini Aga Khan was conferred the degree of Doctor of Divinity.

Two new courses by TERI University on its 10th Anniversary

Two new course are being started by TERI University, associated with the think tank The Energy and Resources Institute, this academic year. This is the tenth year of the University since it got the status of a deemed university. The university, located in New Delhi is starting a specialised MBA programme on business sustainability, which will produce people able to manage businesses in such a way that natural resources do not get used up, announced chancellor R.K. Pachauri.

The second programme is a masters in economics with specialisation in environmental and resource economics, to be headed by well-known scholar Badal Mukherji. He said 28 out of 30 students for the first batch had already been selected, and they had better scores in their graduation examinations than students being admitted in postgraduate economics courses at Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. Pachauri and Mukherji said the course would be enriched by the large amount of research material available at TERI. TERI University was established in 1998 and was granted deemed university status by the University Grants Commission next year. It now has around 350 students in its eco-friendly new campus in Vasant Kunj, southwest Delhi, to which it shifted last year.

SNIA South Asia to increase its educational outreach to Malaysia

Recently, the Storage Networking Industry Association for South Asia (SNIA SA) announced that they have formulated a new part of their organisation to represent Malaysia. With major demand for educational content come from the Singapore region till now, SNIA South Asia is seeing many requests from countries out of which Malaysia stood prominently, with increasing interest in storage technologies.

Customers in Malaysia will now have access to SNIA's storage standards and best practices as well as a comprehensive library of vendor-neutral, educational white papers and presentations on all storage related technologies. SNIA South Asia is to work with their colleagues in Malaysia to map out a program to extend the SNIA Storage Networking Certification Program (SNCP) and to introduce storage training and certification to the region.

Nortel supports AUC to build high tech campus

The American University in Cairo (AUC) is making new City of Learning campus to include the latest communication services for creating advanced technology for 5,500 students and 1,500 faculty and staff. Nortel will support to increase communication efficiencies for AUC students and staff. Even the company will also provide high levels of mobility to users. Mobile communications for campus staff and students will be provided through Nortel wireless area network coverage, which ensures secure high-speed wireless access within the campus. 

16% more on school education says Union Budget 2010

An outlay of INR 31,036 crore (INR 310.36 billion/$6.7 billion) for school education has been laid by the union budget for the next fiscal year, which is estimated to be an increase of INR 4,236 crore from 2009-10, said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on 26th February 2010. This implied an increase of 16% expenditure in school education in the coming fiscal as against the current financial year.

Minister added that states will have an access to INR 3,675 crore for elementary education under the 13th Finance Commission grants for 2010-11. He also mentioned that in recent years, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has made significant contribution in improving enrollment and infrastructure for elementary education.

New age technologies to help in mobility out of recession

Many new generation technologies may help the world get out of recession, the issue will be discussed by two international groups of scientists at the Columbia University at New York from June 14-19. The triennial 13th International Conference on Surface and Colloid Science originating from the International Association of Colloid and Interface Scientists will occur jointly with the annual 83rd Colloid and Surface Science Symposium originating from the American Chemical Society. This confluence will bring together top researchers and technologists spanning the wide range of topics that come under the umbrella of colloid and surface science.

These include behaviours in particulate systems and at interfaces, and the application of this knowledge to a host of industrial technologies such as biomedical, material science, nano-engineering, water treatment, oil recovery, mineral processing, papermaking, and energy and environmental stewardship.

Students claim problem in results, to file RTI over CAT

Beginning in December and ending on 1st March 2010, the Common Admission Test (CAT)was declared by the Indian Institutes of Management, displaying the scores of lakhs of candidates who took the entrance examination. Of the 2.41 lakh students who sat for the exam, 11 of them scored a perfect cent percentile; in absolute numbers, they all were marked close to 300 out of 450. Many students complained about goof-up in the results while many were happy with their absolute percentile.

Several students plan to file right to information (RTI) applications. A heated discussion on students' scores and their expectations was live all of Sunday, the day result was declared, on a popular MBA site, Pagalguy. Candidates also spoke of how they found it difficult to access CAT results. Scores were to be declared at 3 pm, but candidates could finally see their scorecards on the site only by 6 pm as the computer servers could not shoulder the traffic. IIM-A has called 1,200 candidates for its 409 seats and IIM Shillong has shorltisted 1,000 management aspirants.

Gone are the days when students had to go from one Delhi University (DU) college to another to inquire about availability of courses. All the information is now available at the click of a mouse. Several websites are now helping aspirants with both the selection of courses and the process of admission. The 'DU-friendly websites', as they call themselves, have become popular among the young.

Along with the information on popular courses in Delhi University, and previous year's cut off lists, the websites also provide information about other leading universities in the country and abroad. To make the interface more interactive and user-friendly, many of these websites offer free online tests and upcoming schedule of tests for various DU courses. Students can also write to them and get their queries answered. However, there are some students who are not enthused by these websites. Delhi University is one of the most prestigious varsities in the country. Every year around 49,000 students enrol for scores of subjects across its nearly 80 colleges.

Each Punjab student to be e literate by 2010

With a view to enable every student of Punjab state to become digitally literate by 2010, the prestigious ICT education project has been implemented for all 13.5 lac students in all state schools. Computer education subject has also been made compulsory with effect from 2009-10. Disclosing this here Sunday, Upinderjit Kaur Education and Languages Minister Punjab said that under centrally sponsored scheme of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the Punjab ICT Education Society (PICTES) had launched this ambitious computer learning programme based on NCERT guidelines for 6th to 12th classes in all upper primary schools the state in a phased manner.

She mentioned that to facilitate the creation of state of the art infrastructure on lease model for supporting the knowledge economy, the education department under Sarv Sikhya Abhiyan (SSA) had already successfully covered 2880 state schools at a cost of INR 265.34 crore in two phases imparting study to around 11 lac students. The minister further added that the students acquired a number of IT skills during the ICT education program. Both phases of ICT were fully operational and running as planned. Under this project the department has covered the remaining 2085 schools having enrollment of approx 2.5 lac students in third phase at a cost of INR 132.55 crore. She added, to successfully train the students, 5014 computer faculty were recruited under this computer education plan in the schools.
