Singapore investor funds for schooling in slums

Singapore based institutional investor company, Orient Global is looking at private schools for children from low income families of India.

The company is planning to invest $100 million educational sector of India. The company is looking for investment opportunities in private schools, which are running in slums. The company has already invested $1.1 billion in India's financial sector. Orient has tied up with microfinance providers, like Hyderabad's SKS Microfinance and Basix, to offer loans to entrepreneurs who wish to open schools in low-income areas. The fund will also scout for opportunities in China as well as sub-Saharan Africa.

Middle East institutes adopt Blackboard’s e-Learning technology

Academic institutions in the Middle East have looked in Blackboard's education technology as part of their initiative to introduce e-Learning in institutes.

Blackboard Inc., a leading provider of enterprise software and related services to the education industry announced that the company has licensed Blackboard technology to more than thirty leading institutes from eight different countries in the Middle East to enhance teaching and learning. The company has licensed the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), American University in Cairo, Hashmite University, King Fahd University for Petroleum and Minerals, Kuwait University, United Arab Emirates University, and University of Bahrain. Recently, the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) in United Arab Emirates (UAE) has upgraded its system to the Blackboard Learning System Vista Enterprise License, to advance its educational curriculum.

Uganda Govt provides solar computers to rural school

The Uganda Government has approved the proposal to provide solar powered computers to children in rural schools.

The government has approved the production of the solar-powered computers for use in rural schools. This would be first kind of project in Uganda to provide computer skills to children in rural schools. The computer is powered by a small battery. Inveneo, a US firm based in San Francisco,, will produce the computer. The cost of solar powered computer is about $250. It has Internet reception capability and is compatible with both wireless and intranet.

Interest-free education loans for students soon

Students would soon be able to take interest-free loans till they complete higher studies with the government planning to allocate Rs.40 billion for the purpose, a government official said.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry has proposed the amount, which would be used for the 11th five-year plan ending 2012, the official, who did not want to be identified, said.

A senior HRD ministry official confirmed that the proposal has been approved by the finance ministry.

“The matter will come before the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) for approval sometime this month,” said an official.

“We will ensure that the scheme is implemented from the new academic session starting in July this year,” said an HRD official.

Under the scheme, the government would pay the interest for the loan amount sanctioned to any student, till six months after they complete their course.

“After students complete their course, they would get a grace period of six months after which they will have to pay interest on the amount sanctioned to them as education loan,” said a senior finance officer of the HRD ministry.

Banks currently charge between 15 and 18 percent interest on the amount sanctioned to students as education loan.

Government agencies have already begun talks for tie-up with leading banks and financial institutions that are offering education loans for higher education, especially professional courses.

The government will not act as guarantor for the loans, the official clarified.

“The banks will decide if they wish to provide education loan to a student or not. The banks need to be sure about the recovery of the loan sanctioned to students. Our role will be limited only to helping eligible students whose loans are cleared by banks through the new scheme,” added the official.

Wipro signs MoU with AMU, India

Wipro Infotech, the India, Middle East and Asia Pacific IT Business Unit of Wipro Ltd, has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Distance Education of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to act as the strategic IT partners for the Institute.

Under this agreement, Wipro will provide consultancy services in IT requirements to the university. AMU has engaged Wipro as the preferred IT partner for providing technology solutions and participating in the e-Learning initiatives at its Centre for Distance Education (CDE). Wipro will also offer value added services in the form of imparting training by conducting seminars and workshops for students and university faculty members and technical staff in both academic and practical spheres. Wipro would also share literature, content and other information on emerging trends in technology with the university for academic purposes.

ISRO to connect Delhi’s engineering colleges via EDUSAT

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to install a complete 'Edusat' hub and studio at the Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) to promote and spread e-Education in the capital.

ISRO will link all engineering colleges with over 50 government-affiliated premier engineering and management institutes in the capital and NCR region to empower educational programmes in next academic session. Training and Technical Education (TTE) has already identified a few of colleges where Satellite Interactive Terminal (SIT) would be set up to receive the feed beamed thorough the nodal agency, Delhi College of Engineering.

Morocco progresses in e-Learning programmes

Morocco is making progress in e-Learning initiatives. Distance learning is gaining momentum in Morocco with help from both the public and private sector.

Around 15 percent of private companies are investing on distant learning programmes. The increased availability and functionality of IT has brought new teaching tools to the Moroccan market, including mobile phones, video-conferencing, e-mail, discussion forums, chat software and document sharing. Open or remote learning programme (FOAD) provides flexible training opportunities to individuals, businesses, and government bodies. Recently, Morocco's finance ministry has decided to integrate a dedicated distance learning service into its organisational structure. The Ministry of National Education has begun work on an interactive television system (TVI) which aims to provide remote training for teachers across the Kingdom. Formademos, a local firm, has launched two Masters programmes aimed at university graduates with at least one year of work experience. One programme offers a degree in “education and employment systems technology”, and the other program offers a degree in business administration.

FAO launches e-Learning course for food security

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has launched a free e-Learning course to improve the collection, management, analysis and dissemination of food security information from around the world.

The online course, Nutritional Status Assessment and Analysis is launched in meeting in Rome of the Committee of World Food Security (CFS) with representatives from 137 countries. The course is composed of three lessons, which cover the basic concepts of malnutrition, describe how nutritional status is assessed, and identify the most commonly used nutrition indicators as well as criteria for selecting indicators in specific situations. The program also provides an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the main sources of nutritional status information and promotes an integrated analysis of the nutrition situation through an understanding of the underlying causes of malnutrition. FAO also launched other e-Learning courses, 'Reporting Food Security Information' and 'Food Security Information Systems and Network'.

IFC partners Nigerian ICT firm to improve education

    Nigeria based firm has partnered with the World Bank's IFC to deploy ICT skills to improve higher education on the continent.

    International Finance Corporation (IFC) has already partnered with Socketworks Global in June 2002. IFC is working with several financial companies to support small companies and institutes. Uganda's Makerere University Business School (MUBS) is working with Socketworks to roll out its US$1.5 million ICT system. Students and employees at MUBS are taking the advantages of the portal through which several university activities can done online with the customised integrated management information system portal application. The project is based on the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) model and it is expected to be installed in other universities also.

    All Indian institutes receives educational programmes via EDUSAT

    Now all Indian institutes having Satellite Interactive Terminals (SITs) or Receive Only Terminals (ROTs) can receive EDUSAT educational programmes.

    The University Grants Commission (UGC) will make the education based curriculum and it would be provided through the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC). The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has already set up the infrastructure for this programme. All states and Union territories had already committed to sign memorandums of understanding (MoU) with ISRO and the Human Resource Development ministry in next two months. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will also sponsor telecasting of programmes through AICTE-EDUSAT network for conducting training programmes and seminars. The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is already utilizing the infrastructure of EDUSAT for curriculum based education, teachers' training, professional educational courses and for conducting teleconferencing sessions for software content generation. National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is also conducting inter-active orientation/training programmes for teachers and educators.
