Computers, Internet access for most disadvantaged pupils of London

London Grid for Learning & RM will provide the desktop computers and Internet access to disadvantaged secondary pupils of London.

The London Grid for Learning (LGfL) has awarded RM for providing the Computers for Pupils programme for some most disadvantaged pupils across the capital. The programme will also enable to access Internet connectivity to the National Education Network (NEN). Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has taken this initiative to set up ICT into the homes of the country's most disadvantaged 11 to b16 years old pupils. RM will provide PC hardware, support services and Internet connectivity. This initiative will raise educational standards and supports personalised learning for all.

Microsoft’s establishes innovation centre in South Africa

    Microsoft has established a new Microsoft School Technology Innovation Centre in South Africa to increase access of digital literacy for the students in contributing for job opportunities.


    The main objective of the centre is to bridge the digital divide and make ensure that more people can access to digital literacy. The centre will also demonstrate the extent, so that private sector can assist government to improve people lives. Under the government's policy on e-Education, every teacher, manager and leaner in General and Further Education and Training will equipped with knowledge and skills to use ICT in their lives. The company is working with governments and industries worldwide to accelerate skills development and help employers find qualified candidates.

    First e-School launched in South Africa

    President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki has launched six new New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad) e-Schools in the country.

    The launch is part of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad) e-schools project. The first school would be equipped with an Hewlett Packard (HP) computer lab, complete with servers, ersonal computers, printers, faxes, scanners, copiers and wireless connectivity. The main of the project is to increase the use of technology in education and increase IT skills among students. Teachers and local community would be able to learn the ICT skills. 

    Infosys BPO offers communication skills to Karnataka (India) students

    Karnataka University in Bangalore, India has tied up with Infosys BPO to train students in communication and domain specific skills. Karnata University has signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Infosys to provide this service to university students.

    The Infosys Affirmative Action Programme focuses on aligning the needs of general colleges, faculty and students with the industry needs, thus preparing “industry ready” professionals. Infosys, which is already implementing the programme in Karnataka, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, plans to take it to Orissa, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

    Smart includes 50 more school in Smart school project in Philippines

    Smart Communications, Inc., leading wireless service provider will expand the Smart Schools Programme in Philippines by including 50 more public high schools and 30 public elementary schools nationwide this year.

    The Department of Education (Deped) and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) has signed an agreement with Smart Communications to expand the Smart school project. Under the Smart Schools Program, Smart constructs or upgrades computer laboratories into Smart Teachers Learning Resource Centers and provides free Internet connection for one year. Schools can make themselves most learning resource through the Smart schools website (www.smartschools.ph). The site offers access to online content that teachers can use for research, in making class presentations and in exchanging best practices with colleagues. The Smart Schools Program is implemented in cooperation with PBSP, Sweep and Learn.ph Foundation, with support from Deped.

    Gemini receives INR 57.6 million to complete ICT Education project Punjab, India

    State Government of Punjab, India has given an order of worth INR 57.6 million to Gemini Communication Ltd complete the third phase of ICT Education project.

    Gemini Communication Ltd will now work with the Turnkey Hardware and Service Provider for supply, installation and maintenance of IT infrastructure for phase III of ICT Education project. The project will cover around 2085 Government Schools in rural and urban areas across the state. The project would be based on a Lease, Maintain and Transfer (LMT) model for 5 years under the Project ICT Education in Schools. The company will set up entire networking in the school, install the workstations and servers with all the software and also maintain the infrastructure for five years. Now Gemini can develop more resources in North India and increase its services in Haryana, Punjab and Himanchal Pradesh.

    IOL Broadband empowers e-Learning market in India

    IOL Broadband is planning to launch interactive broadband services to boost the e-Learning market in India. The company has signed an agreement with Chennai based, ABAN Informatics Pvt Ltd. to provide this service. ABAN Informatics is the only firm offering curriculum specific web enabled content for CBSE and ICSE board exams.

    This joint venture will allow millions of students to get instant online access to high end 2D and 3D multimedia content of CBSE and ICSE curriculum. Recently, the Human Resource Ministry announced the promotion of online education all over India. The company promises to deploy cutting edge technology including, fast connectivity. The company has partnered with some of the leading e-Learning content providers including, IL&FS ETS, Educational Initiatives and W3Varsity.

    Malaysia Education Ministry allocates RM72.1 million to boost ICT in pre-schools

    The Education Ministry of Malaysia has allocated RM72.1 million to purchase desktop computers for pupils in pre-school. This is an effort to transform all schools into smart schools.

    The Ministry has also allocated RM113 million for software courses to assist teachers and pupils. According to Education Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, smart school is a process to make ICT, a culture in education and aimed to improve the quality of teaching and learning. The Ministry has made an additional allocation of RM72 million for students in rural areas to expose ICT. The Government is aiming to create such 1600 access centres. The Ministry will also supply high powered generators or utilise the hybrid solar technology.

    Kerala (India) ranks first in Education Development Index

    In India, Kerala ranks first and Bihar ranks last in the first composite Education Development Index (EDI), which is  prepared to track the progress of States towards providing universal elementary education.

    The EDI, which is prepared by the National University of Educational Planning and Administration (http://www.nuepa.org), was released on 16 April, 2007 along with the District Report Cards for the year 2005-06 that are routinely brought out by the District Information System of Education. States, which performed well in terms of education were Kerala, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Delhi tops in primary education and Kerala in upper primary education. The survey study which covered 11,24,033 schools across the country, found that the enrolment of students in classes I to VIII in the year 2005-06 showed an increase of 12.28 million over the previous year to 168.29 million. However, 180 of the 581 districts have reported a decline in primary enrolment. Retention rate of students at the primary level is 100 percent in Tamil Nadu, to be followed by Madhya Pradesh (95.50 percent) and Kerala (95.37 per cent). At the all India level, the retention rate has gone up from 58 per cent in 2004 to 71 per cent in 2005. Government schools have recruited more girls than private schools.

    IGNOU, India offers Internet facility to 1600 centres

    Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), India has decided to provide computers with Internet facility to all its its 1600 centres across the country and abroad.

    Centres will use these computer for their administrative purposes like record maintenance of students' records, transmission of grades and other areas of learner support. IGNOU is also planning to set up computer labs to enable learners with ICT. IGNOU is taking several other steps to promote e-Learning which include creation of a national digital repository by e-Gyankosh, creation of tele-learning centres, launching smart cards for its students and creation of information kiosks at its regional centres.
