ICT for English teaching at University

At both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, Bharathidasan University is to have Information and Communication Technology (ICT ) introduced for English language teaching. K Meena, Vice Chancellor described that the communication that arises from technology integration through power point presentations would intrigue students, especially from rural background. Use of ICT would enable effective interactive learning, observing that the process of audio conversion to text in language laboratories helps students a lot to assimilate listening skill.

It was suggested to the Head of the University's Department of English V Ayothi, who coordinated the 21-day refresher training programme for English teachers at the Academic Staff College, that a manual should be created based on the feedback of the participants for consideration of the Board of Studies for English Language and Literature. It was made certain that technology would help in transforming the teacher-centric process into a learner-centric one. A component on ICT integrated into the course content of the programme earned appreciation from the English teachers. Besides emphasising on technology, the participants also called for integration of communicative English, soft skills and stage performance into the course content to equip students to excel in group discussion and interviews for corporate jobs.
