Dr. Shruti Tiwari, Principal, Suresh Gyan Vihar University, Jaipur: Exploring new online tools for students

Dr. Shruti Tiwari

The horror story begins with a Chinese doctor who first warned his government of the coronavirus outbreak. He was ophthalmologist Li Wenliang, who had first shared suspicion of a Sars-like illness spreading in Wuhan (China) and died after he was infected by the coronavirus. Chinese scientists believe pangolins may have spread coronavirus from bats to humans after they found the genome sequence separated from endangered mammals 99 per cent identical to that from infected people. This virus is spreading in other countries and in India.

Then, a time reached to make everyone aware about it. On the day 8th February-2020 students and faculties of Gyan Vihar School of Education, Suresh Gyan Vihar University took an initiative to spread an awareness about coronavirus and preventive measures against coronavirus in the society people in slum areas of Jhalana Doongri in Jaipur (Rajasthan).all students got involved to learn the responsible behavior towards community work during their professional training with ardor. And then after a month all teaching-learning process and academics on campus has been suspended till further orders in India due to lockdown. So, on SGVU, Jaipur campus, digital technologies are on boom to keep managing day- today teaching-learning practices.

Academics in the University is running on MOODLE (LMS), GOOGLE Classrooms, DUO,Google Hangouts, YOUTUBES even experimenting with easy ways i.e. WhatsApp, androids for audio- video sessions and various chat-boxes. Management and administrators and faculties are conducting online meetings too on apps DUO and ZOOM cloud meetings. All faculties are also learning new technologies to take their classes. One good transformation is continuously observing while online teaching sessions that a curiosity towards the digitized mode as well as technological approach is developing in the students and teachers.

They are exploring new tools of online contents, online tools and online apps for teaching learning processes though various problems are also generated during its implementation since internet speed, hangings, buffering and many more. But, we are moving on to adapting the untold challenges. The implementation is meticulously planned for conducting the online sessions on LMS in the all departments of SGVU during this lockdown tenure by constructing 30 minutes class (content delivery) + 15 minutes quiz of 5 MCQ and 5 short type answers ( evaluation part) + 10 minute (discussion in chat-room/box). Internal evaluation part i.e.

weekly test and graded assignments are not hindered they are successfully conducted on each Monday as per the academic calendar. Students and teachers are encouraged to register themselves on NPTEL/ SWAYAM/ COURSERA/ HAWARD’S CASESTUDIES (SGVU login).

Various heads of departments are delivering awareness talks to take the precautions for stopping the spread of Corona-virus. Motivational talks for safety and well being of health and mind of individuals. University is donating various material to the community people and adapted village Gram-Kacholiya (Jaipur District) like sanitizers and masks and grocery items. So, I think it’s really a testing time for us and country, we the academicians have to take this challenge or crises as an opportunity to adopt digital technology for teaching more broadly.
