VIT Deploys Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi in its Campus

Ruckus Wireless has deployed Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi at VIT Vellore and VIT Chennai to support a campus-wide Wi-Fi network, delivering a high-speed Wi-Fi network to over 20,000 students. The campus-wide consists of over 200 Ruckus ZoneFlex 7962 dual-band 11n Access Points, covering new student hostel facilities.

Mohan Kumar C M, Head of IT Infrastructure, VIT University, Chennai said “Today, technology has permeated every sphere of life. Universities across the globe are using it to invigorate their academic and administrative processes. Proliferations of mobile devices such as smart phones, tablets have made our university become a more open learning environment. The problem is that universities create one of the worst environments for Wi-Fi given all the various devices, obstructions, delay-sensitive applications and RF interferences found here. We were looking for a Wi-Fi system that would work well in interference prone and environment where full of obstructions. For students today, Wi-Fi is now not just a matter of convenience or a privilege; it is an expectation. Mobility is the need of the hour. Campus Wi-Fi networks help the students and faculty members to access to e-learning materials anytime anywhere.” Kumar added.

There were major challenges in university’s existing wireless infrastructure. The legacy Wi-Fi network could not cater to the huge data demand and user density at the campus. Students and faculty staff had to deal with network availability very often. Also, it would often lead to loss of connectivity as a result of choking of bandwidth. The entire connectivity infrastructure was unreliable which led to a large number of complaints.

“Wi-Fi is now considered as a strategic imperative in education, enabling a ubiquitous, always-on learning environment connecting to the world. Today mobile devices have risen to become the most popular way to stay online, encouraging higher education to create a more open and efficient environment to students. Wi-Fi is widely used as an aid to enable e-learning, increase operational efficiency and gain timely information access. Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi provides the reliability needed for the new type of applications demanded by the education industry. Ruckus was honored to be the provider of VIT’s WLAN network. Ruckus patented adaptive antenna and ChannelFly technologies enabled large deployments in high RF interference environment to continually maintain a stable and consistent Wi-Fi networks without a lot of un-necessary add-on equipment. Therefore Ruckus is able to deploy high-performance Wi-Fi at a more affordable price than our competitors.” said Manjit Singh, Managing Director for India, Ruckus Wireless.

VIT looked at several popular Wi-Fi solutions in the market, but could not zero in on the brand with the right balance of performance and cost. The new requirement for campus Wi-Fi should be able to be deployed campus-wide at an affordable price. Only Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi gave the highest performance in terms of coverage, performance, manageability, and scalability at the cost VIT can deploy today, and continue to expand in the future.

VIT started the deployment in November 2011 and the entire deployment, including the cabling throughout the campus was completed within 1 month. Ruckus SmartMesh enabled VIT to outfit the ZoneFlex system where cabling was not in place. By backhauling the Wi-Fi traffic through the 5G Hz mesh links, VIT was able to bring Wi-Fi wherever they wanted, even without Ethernet cabling in place.

“We proposed Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi because they delivered a robust performance that meets testing parameters of VIT. Even though there were a large number of APs installed, the configuration was easy and the installation hardly lasted a few hours. Ruckus Wi-Fi technology delivered much better coverage, interference mitigation and deployment flexibility that we couldn’t find in any other supplier.” said Murali Rajesh, General Manager, Seamless Communication (P) Limited.

Andhra Pradesh Tops the List of Closing B-Schools

Around 130 management institutes or 4 percent of all B-schools in India are expected to be closed this year, twice as many as last year. The reasons behind the closure are said to be faculty shortage, lack of students, substandard curriculum and poor infrastructure reported the Financial Express

List of states whose business schools have applied for closure have Andhra Pradesh on top with 36 such institutes, followed by Rajasthan with 25 and Uttar Pradesh with 18. Total seat capacity of all these institutes is almost 10,000. Recently, the Mumbai Business School wound up after three years of operation due to lack of students. India has nearly 4,000 B-schools with a capacity of 3.5 lakh seats. Every year, around 60-70 institutes get added to the list. The council is still processing the applications of institutes and closure can happen once the respective state government and affiliating.

IGNOU, NHRC to train cops on Human Rights

The Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU’s) School of Law (SOL) in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) organized third three-day Training of Trainers programme (TOT) on Human Rights for police personnel at the IUC Lab, IGNOU, main campus, in the capital.

The three-day training programme was attended by 26 police officials from all over the country. The main objective of this workshop was to sensitize the police functionaries on Human Right principles and values.

Jaideep Singh Kochher, Joint Secretary, NHRC, in his welcome address expressed the need to share these training sessions in their respective states in order to facilitate learning. He also mentioned that apart from attending to the complaints of the public, NHRC also has an important role of creating awareness about human rights.

The training manual (print/online) has been developed by IGNOU and NHRC. The online units are made interactive and are designed using multimedia approach, with the technical support of E-gyankosh.

She also apprised the trainers about three platforms through which they would be trained. There will be animated characters based delivery of the programme, web conferences and usage of software called ‘Moodle’. She further explained them about the modes of delivery which depends upon the kind of infrastructure available to the cops in their respective states.

Mamta Singh, DIG, NHRC in her remarks mentioned that the objective of the programme is to reverse the image of cops from violators to defenders by involving major strength of police and providing them the podium.

Prof K. Elumalai, Director, SOL, IGNOU, in his introductory address mentioned that the training programme will cover aspects like protection of human rights, police and human rights, NHRC and its complaint management system, custodial justice, human rights best practices and Convention Against Torture (CAT).

The participants in addition will be exposed to extensive hands on practice with computer. The expected outcome of this programme is to bridge the gap between police and the common people, sensitize police officials towards the human rights issues, create a force of self regulated and informed police officials and to find out the practical difficulties faced by police officials in implementing law keeping with human rights issues at the fore.

eMaharashtra 2012 :: April 27, 2012 :: Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Nariman Point, Mumbai

We put the spotlight on Maharashtra and its initiatives and efforts in bringing  about a digitally inclusive society, of ICTs playing the harbinger of a silent  revolution in obscure towns and villages, of acknowledging the efforts and  addressing the challenges, and of bringing all stakeholders with common  concerns into one platform, the eMaharashtra platform.

Technology has for long remained the driving force in the urban areas of India.  However, the digital divide has been a persistent problem that not only exists  between countries, but also within a country. Lack of adequate awareness and limited knowledge has resulted in the creation of pockets of ICT knowledge  hubs, restricted to the urban metros.

Our endeavors have consistently been focused on making ICTs more valuable and have delved deeper into finding out ways and means on how ICTs can have  an enriching and socially relevant role in society.eMaharashtra attempts to go local through the Regional Summits. Our mandate is to solidify the national efforts of entrenching the constructive use of ICTs across domains.

eMaharashtra Summit shall aim at active knowledge sharing, showcasing of existing e-government initiatives such as e-Education,  eGovernance and Municipal IT and many more, in the state, deliberate on the way forward, and seek to provide a platform to exchange ideas and promote capacity building.
