Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited invests in CSR

During the year of 2009-10, Kuthethur-based Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) invested INR 12.70 crore on various corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. This was a quantum jump in the amount allocated for CSR considering that MRPL in 2008-09 spent INR  3.69 crore on such activities. In the present fiscal year, within the first six months MRPL spent INR 2 crore, with many CSR projects in the pipeline.

It was reported by Lekshmi M Kumaran, Deputy General Manager (Corporate communications and CSR), MRPL that the objective of casting various CSR projects undertaken by the company, a subsidiary of ONGC is education and creation of basic infrastructure for the rehabilitation of project displaced families. She added that the relevance and adequacy of projects suggested to the CSR department is evaluated before taking the project forward.  The company also responds to requests for aid routed through the district administration, she said, adding MRPL has also responded with contribution in cash and kind whenever the state has faced major natural calamities.

Obama on Indian US education perspective

India is to witness big international education deals in coming week, by beginning with US President Barack Obama's visit to India.  The visit is aimed at making India a global education destination. Singing of pacts with Canada will take place on Tuesday and the UK on Thursday, after finalising projects with Obama's delegation on Monday, top government sources confirmed.

Named after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the US President, the Singh-Obama 21st Century Knowledge Initiative will be the cornerstone of the discussions between officials of the two nations on education this Monday. The US also wants to declare an education summit with top Indian officials. Thursday will witness signing of pact by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal , of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) with British minister of state for education and skill David Willetts. Under the UKIERI-2 pact the UK will declare officially a plan to make India a major destination for its students

Refresher course in language skills for over 200 Teach India volunteers

Participation of over 200 Teach India volunteers was witnessed in a weeklong 'training the trainers' programme that they described as outstanding – conducted by expert facilitators from the British Council of India. Teach India is The Times of India's social responsibility initiative that has seen tremendous response ever since its launch in 2008. This year, the initiative focuses on spoken English courses for the youth for jobs. The idea is to coach sets of dedicated trainers who will in turn coach underprivileged young men and women in language skills needed to land jobs in retail, hospitality so on and so forth – in essence a skills-for-employability programme with focus on English language spoken communication.

In first go, the programme was held across six centres in NCR. The training will see 200 trainers emerge who in turn will be linked with NGOs across NCR. Both the BCL facilitators and citizen volunteers brought to the sessions the energy of a mission that can power a million dreams. The drive to be a part of the sharply-focused initiative has seen a staggering array of participants from diverse backgrounds. The training module was praised by volunteers.

Little Genius course by Reliance

Reliance WebWorld has launched a certificate programme, Little Genius, on computers and Internet for kids in India between the age group of 5 to 13 years.

In this 7-day programme, kids are taught the basics of computer hardware, Internet surfing, searching educational news, and entertainment sites using search engines. Reliance WebWorld operates a nationwide chain of retail stores for digital entertainment and communication. Presently, it is also running educational programme for senior citizens, housewives, and students in Madhya Pradesh. The programme aims at making them Internet savvy and making best use of the technological tools already in place at the Web world. A certificate would be given to all the students on successful completion of the program.

The course is held only at RWW and is conducted by our well-trained Web guides who teach & assist the kids with the PC and the reading material, including exercises. Another innovative programme covering another age group is in the pipeline. So far, more than twenty batches of students have successfully completed the courses at the WebWorlds.

LLC to support K12 and Higher Education training courses

US community colleges invite AP students to study in US

United States Consulate General, with the support of the Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, on Wednesday announced the Community College Initiatives Programme. This programme offers youth from Andhra Pradesh, without a university background, the opportunity to study in a community college in the US to develop professional skills.

The US government will provide funding for round-trip airfare, tuition costs, health benefit plan and cultural enhancement activities for the one-year long programme. Eligible fields for the programme include agriculture, applied engineering, business management and administration; health professions, including nursing; information technology; media; and tourism and hospitality management. To apply, candidates must have completed secondary school education, have relevant work experience in the field in which they are applying, have English language skills that provide a basis for enrolling in academic course work following two months of intensive English language study in the US, and submit completed applications to the Public Affairs Section, US Consulate General – Hyderabad by December 4, 2009.

Tech Education to be improved in Chennai

In a few years, at least 200 engineering colleges in the country are expected to have better faculty and research centres through the Union ministry of human resource development's Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP), the second phase of which is to take off in April 2010.

A project information document (PID) prepared by the World Bank says TEQIP II, taken up at an estimated INR 2,350 crore. It says improving quality and learning outcomes would require tackling insufficient faculty qualifications and large faculty shortage. The government of India's estimate of the production of PhDs is just 1,000 a year for a student population of 1.7 million, compared to a PhD production of 9,000 in the US and 12,000 in China. The project is garnering a lot of interest in academic and industry circles because of what it has helped achieve in the first phase. In various technical institutes in Tamil Nadu, TEQIP I funded the procurement of sophisticated equipment, infrastructure development, academic reforms, and improved the interface between institutes through networking.

UIDAI and HRD partner for education schemes

The Indian Human Resource Development Ministry has signed a MoU with Unique Identification Authority of India, realising the importance of Unique Identification Number. The partnership is to support education sector for better implementation of schemes, tracking student's record and curbing menace of fake degrees.The proposed MoU would be helpful in tracking student's mobility by creating an electronic registry of all students, right from primary/elementary level through secondary and higher education, as also between the institutions. The agreement was signed between Amit Khare, Joint Secretary, HRD Ministry and Anil Kachi, Deputy Director GeneraL, UIDAI.

The HRD Ministry will co-operate and collaborate with the UIDAI in conducting proof of concept (PoC) studies, pilots to test the working of the technology and process of enrolment into the UID database, identify Registrars for the implementation of the UID project (PoC and pilots). UIDAI has been set up by the government for issuing UID number to all citizens, based on demographic and biometric data of the individuals. The issuing of UID number to all the residents of India will be based on demographic and biometric data of the individual.

Delhi University gets new Vice Chancellor

On October 29, 2010 the Delhi University got its 20th Vice Chancellor in Dinesh Singh, who was till recently the institute's Pro-Vice Chancellor. He took over as the head of India's premier university, at a time when the university is witnessing prolonged agitation by teachers over the semester system. Singh, a mathematician, was also director of the university's south Campus.
