8 varsities by ICFAI with INR 400 crore

Known for its chain of B Schools, the ICFAI Group, is planning to set up eight universities in as many states in the next two years with an investment of INR 400 crore. It has received the necessary approvals from the governments of Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab, said SK Sharma, director, planning and coordination, ICFAI.

The universities are expected to be operational first in Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh next year. The universities in Gujarat, Assam, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh will follow suit in 2012. The group has signed an agreement with the state government to set up a university in Punjab. Babianeha, ICT and Library leisures for three communities

Now three farming communities along the Ghana-Cote d'Ivoire border in the Dormaa municipality are to have an access to Information Communication Technology (ICT) and a Community Library. The beneficiary communities of the two projects, which cost GHC 7000, include Babianeha, Benekrom and Kofibadukrom.

The library containing a variety of books and the ICT Centre, which has 11 lap-top computers and accessories including modems, were established by a team of five under-graduates from Michigan Technological University who spent five weeks in Ghana as part of the university's Overseas Development Project.

MSA for Chandigarh, announced Shivraj Patil

In order to make affordable and quality education easily accessible to children in the age group of 14 to 18 years in the union territory of Chandigarh, Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Shivraj Patil announced that the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan will soon be launched at Chandigarh. This he declared while addressing a gathering at the Independence Day Celebrations in the union territoy at the Parade Ground in Sector 17. He hoisted the national flag and also took the guard of honor at a parade.

$25m share repurchase by Grand Canyon Education

Grand Canyon Education Inc., a for profit school mentioned on August 16, 2010, that its board approved of a programme to buy back up to $25 million of stock until Sept. 30 of next year. The company plans to fund the repurchase program with cash and short-term investments. The purchases may be made in the open market or in private transactions.


Scholarships to minority community girls by Maulana Azad foundation

The Maulana Azad Education Foundation (MAEF), Tamil Nadu, has invited applications from girl students belonging to minority communities for the Maulana Azad National Scholarship. MAEF will be presenting the scholarship to around 692 meritorious girl students of minority communities studying in Class 11 in Tamil Nadu for the current academic year. According to a press release, Collector V. Arun Roy has said that the scholarship, worth INR 12,000, will be given to the selected candidates in two installments each.


Best CCE school award by CBSE

Soon, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is to institute two awards for schools all over India so as to encourage the implementation of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) as well as the Mentoring and Monitoring System. All 11,044 schools affiliated to CBSE have been instituted awards by CBSE. The factors that will be taken into consideration for awarding the schools would include awareness of the evaluation system, its implementation, record keeping, teaching aids used, advocacy programme for parents and training for teachers, format of report card and lesson planning.

Chairman of CBSE Vineet Joshi informed that every CCE award would include a certificate as well as a cash prize worth INR 21,000. The school principals who will be awarded the Mentor prize will be given a certificate as well as a cash prize worth INR 10,000.


US universities and Government partners for IFS officers training

For enhancing the competence of Indian Forest Service Officers in the areas of environmental policy and forestry management, the government of India has partnered with some universities in the USA to provide Mid-Career Training to the officers. Through the partnership, the Mid Career Training that will be provided to the officers is expected to improve their professional skills.

At different levels of career of the Indian Forest Service Officers, the Mid Career Training will be mandatory, in their career progression as per Indian Forest Services (IFS) Pay Rules. The training will be conducted at the Indian Institutes of Management (IMM) or the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), Dehradun and for two weeks in selected foreign universities. The six universities selected for the training programme include Colorado State University, University of Yale and University of Syracuse.


Second Innings of Africa eNetwork education programme by India

Second phase of pan-Africa e-network, adding 12 more countries to the New Delhi-aided long distance education programme has been launched by India. Union External Affairs Minister, SM Krishna underlined the importance of Indian partnership with African continent, while conversing with senior ministers of 12 African countries via video-conference. A brainchild of India's former president APJ Abdul Kalam, the e-network seeks to bridge the digital divide across the 53-nation African continent and seeks to provide tele-education through a fibre-optic network. India has signed agreement with 47 countries in Africa. However, the infrastructure has been completed in 34 of them.

The seven Indian educational institutions associated with the project are Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Amity University, University of Madras, Indira Gandhi National Open University, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, University of Delhi and Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur. The countries that joined the network earlier included Burundi, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Eritrea, Libya, Malawi, Mozambique, Somalia and Uganda. Eleven countries included in the first phase of the project launched last year were Benin, Burkina Faso, Gabon, the Gambia, Ghana, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal and Seychelles.


IGNOU and Everonn collaborate to launch short term hospitality programme

Indira Gandhi National Open University and Everonn Skill Development Limited (ESDL) have launched 20 short-term programmes in hospitality. These short non-credit hospitality courses are to be certified by IGNOU and are to be duration of between 1 to 6 months. The courses are aimed at upgrading skill sets in the hospitality industry to meet the global standards.

Project-based learning and telecollaboration in Chinese Schools by UNESCO

UNESCO organised a workshop at Bangkok – ICT in Education Programme – under the Facilitating ICT-Pedagogy Integration Project took place in Guangzhou, China during July 27-30, 2010, in collaboration with South China Normal University and the Educational Information Centre of Guang dong Province. The Korean Funds-In-Trust funded this 'Capacity-Building Workshop on Project-Based Learning and Telecollaboration' and introduced teachers to the Facilitating ICT-Pedagogy Integration Project, and expanded their horizons on the use of ICT-enhanced project-based learning and telecollaboration.

There were nearly 100 participants including teachers from 15 schools in Guangzhou and nearby areas, officials from the Educational Information Centre of Guangdong Province, and teacher educators from South China Normal University, attended the four-day training. The workshop commenced with participants gaining understanding about the components of the KFIT project: capacity building of teachers on ICT-pedagogy integration; designing and facilitating student-centred ICT-based activities; strengthening partnership between teacher educators and teachers; and developing of a whole-school support strategy on ICT integration in Education.
