HRD Ministry receives divident cheque from EdCIL
The Chairperson and Managing Director EdCIL, Anju Banerjee, presented a dividend cheque of INR150 lakh to Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal. EdCIL (India) Limited, a central public sector enterprise is the only consultancy organisation in India offering a complete spectrum of services in the field of Education and Human Resource Development on a global basis.
During the year 2009-10, the company recorded growth at 22% in turnover and 32% pre tax profits by achieving a turnover of INR65.45 crores and Pre-tax Profit amounting to INR6.73 crores and declaring aDividend of INR150 lakh, which is 100% of the paid-up capital of the Company.
Kerela University to offer Magic courses
Kerela University is not to offer professional magic courses, as courses conducted by the Magic Academy have been recognised by the university here. The courses have been recognised by Kerala University's Centre for Adult Continuing Education Extension (CACEE). In the initial stage, a 100-hour certificate course and a diploma course having 200 learning hours will be conducted. The academy will invite application forms and run the classes but the CACEE will conduct the examinations.
The university is to offer a three month certificate course in Magical Art and Science will comprise of the history of magic, science of magic, showmanship, close-up magic and conjuring magic. The diploma course will have the art and science of magic. Those who have passed senior secondary or equivalent examination are eligible for admission to the certificate course. Only those who pass the certificate course or those who have started performing magic on stage can join the diploma course.
UIN for school students in Kerela
Unique Identity Number (UIN), or 'Aadhaar' number has been given to school students in Kerela, during the current academic year as a part of the Unique Identification Authority (UIDAI) initiative of the Centre.The scheme being put in practice with the help of IT@ School Project, would pilot this in two schools in the next month, mentioned IT@School Project Director, K Anvar Sadath. Nearly 12,000 schools in the state would be considered for this drive.
Unique Identification Number or 'Aadhaar' is a 12-digit number that would be provided to students. It will demand information on name, gender, date of birth, and address as mandatory details,called Know Your Residence (KYR) details, but other information like class name, admission number will also be collected. IT@School project would deploy its own School Management System to capture necessary details. From this database the KYR fields would be filtered to a separate software, provided by UIDAI. Upon registering for Aadhaar, students will go through a biometric scanning of ten fingerprints and iris. They would be photographed and given an enrollment number upon completion. With this drive in progress IT@School plans to complete enrollment process ofr nearly 60 lakhs students before March 2011.
Dipak Jain now the Dean at INSEAD
INSEAD, the leading international business school has appointed the eminent Indian-American academician, Dipak Jain as its next dean, succeeding J Frank Brown, who will step down in March 2011. Jain, an American citizen and native of Tezpur, Assam, was Kellogg's Dean from 2001-2009. He is the Sandy and Morton Goldman Professor in Entrepreneurial Studies and Professor of Marketing there, a chair he has held since 1994.
INSEAD, which has campuses in Singapore, France and Abu Dhabi, chose Jain partly to further beef up its global presence, said Franz Humer, chairman of INSEAD's board while announcing Jain's appointment. Jain has been chosen to lead the institute into a fast growing economy and he holds lot of experience developing programmes around the world. For instance, will be charged with looking for opportunities to build programs in China and India, as well as maximsing the potential of the Abu Dhabi campus. He is a graduate of Guwahati University and a masters in management science. He did PhD from the University of Texas at Dallas. A noted scholar in marketing and entrepreneurship, Jain has published some 60 articles in scholarly and professional journals and three books and is the recipient of numerous awards for teaching and scholarship.
Pharmacy college to recieve INR 3 crore
Manubhai Himabhai Patel, the first Indian Chartered Accountant who practiced in Kenya, is to donate INR3 crore to set up a Degree Pharmacy College in Gujarat. Patel is 88 year old, who lives in Ahmedabad had given INR 1.5 crors to CL Patel, Chairman of Charutar Vidya Mandal, in presence of his three sons. The Mandal runs 45 educational institutions and has more than 35,000 students.
IGNOU through Nokia phone to supply course on English
In order to effectively use the modern technology in distance education, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) said on Tuesday it would provide a certificate programme in English through Nokia phone's Ovi Life Tools. IGNOU Vice Chancellor VN Rajasekharan Pillai, mentioned that the initiative is to start initially in six districts of Maharashtra and will be launched nation wide once response at Maharashtra is reviewed.
IGNOU has entered into a strategic collaboration agreement with Nokia to provide the programme. It will be in functional English provided mainly through SMS. The six-month certificate programme in functional English will begin from January next year. It is divided in three levels – English in daily life, English in education and joining the workforce. It will cost INR1,900. Ovi Life Tools, launched by Nokia in June 2009, is a range of services covering agriculture, education and entertainment. It supports 10 Indian languages — Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati and Oriya — besides English.
