Distance education enrolment goes up in Indian varsity

Higher enrolment for the Master of Business Administration programme has made a substantial difference to the admission tally of the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) of Madurai Kamaraj University in India this academic year.

While the enrolment figure (for all courses) was 29,000 during last year, the number of admissions this time reached nearly 32,000 with MBA and M. Phil. programmes registering a surging demand from students opting for distance education stream. The admission figure for MBA programme shot up to 3,450 this academic year from only 1,300 previous year because of some restructuring of the course. The university also saw a nearly 10 per cent rise in M. Phil. admissions from 3,600 last year to 3,900 this year.

Educational institutes in India need to help in rural development

President of India A P J Abdul Kalam has called upon educational institutions in the country, especially those in rural areas, to participate in rural development by replicating the Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) model. 
 
The President set a mission for the academic and scientific community to set up 100 PURAs by January 2007, the next session of the Indian Science Congress. In the PURA model, an academic institution is at the centre that provides electronic and knowledge connectivity to a cluster of villages, thereby leading to economic connectivity. Citing the example of three PURAs set up in different states, like the women's engineering college at Vallam in Tamil Nadu, a medical institute at Loni in Maharashtra and a research institute at Chitrakoot in Madhya Pradesh, the President in all the three operational PURAs, technology and scientific methods of working play a very important role. The number of such PURA clusters required was 7,000. Science and technology focus is required for making the Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP) sustainable and remunerative to the 700 million people of the country living in 6,00,000 villages. 

Financial grants to IMU approved by Cabinet

The Economic Affairs Cabinet Committe has recently approved of the proposal to provide the financial support of INR 282.25 crores to Indian Maritime University (IMU), Chennai in order to combat the capital expenditure as well as recurring deficit. Established as a Central University, IMU, will all India Jurisdiction, is to create employment opportunities in Maritime sector not only for Indian Shipping but is also to meet the shortage of manpower of the global shipping. It has been reported that the total estimated revenue and expenditure over a period of five years from 2009-10 to 2013-14 of the IMU are INR 449.44 crore and INR 436.04, crore respectively. There is a deficit of INR6.92 crore and the total fund requirement is envisaged to be INR 282.25 crore out of which INR 275.33 crore is as Capital support and INR 6.92 crore to meet the deficit. This will be met through plan support to be provided by the government of India.


The capital support will be utilized for construction of academic block, administrative block and hostel block etc. at the IMU Head Quarters etc. The funds will also be utilized for implementation of reservation of Other Backward Classes (OBC) in the existing Maritime Institutes merged with IMU in compliance of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in admissions) Act, 2006.

The main objectives of formation of IMU are to facilitate and promote maritime studies, research and extension work with focus on emerging areas of studies including marine science & technology, marine environment, socio-economic, legal and other related fields, and also to achieve excellence in these and connected fields. The major impact should cover the issues of facilitating quality manpower; service export and Foreign Exchange, research and development and enhance status and image of India as a maritime nation.


Namibia Ministry of ICT joins hand with private sector

In order to facilitate and strengthen government's capacity to promote information and communication technology in the country, a new structural expansion of Namibia Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) is being sought. This was confirmed in an announcement made at a consultative meeting between government and private sector players, that in future will work more closely towards ensuring Namibia becomes a knowledge-based society.

India based 24×7 Learning to enter global e-Learning

24×7 Learning, the  Bangalore-based Indian company, has announced its plans to enter the global eLearning arena by targeting East and Middle East Asia as well as the US.

The company's product, LearnTrak, is a licence-based software aimed at corporates in the IT, government and banking domains. Companies mainly demand .Net, voice training and project management courses, but courses on communication skills like e-Mail etiquette are also seeing adoption now. The company will also focus on new domains such as manufacturing, telecom, banking, retail and pharma. It will soon launch LearnTrak BPO, a new software especially for the BPO industry. 24×7 Learning may also partner with academic institutions like IGNOU to offer distance learning. The Indian e-Learning market is estimated at Rs 80-100 crore. The company expects to earn US$12-million revenue in the next two years.

Colleges prefered over varsities for PhDs by Mumbai Students

It has been brought out that the doctoral research, which was once the exclusive domain of the University of Mumbai, is now being carried out increasingly in colleges which are meant for undergraduate studies, according to the information sought under Right To Information (RTI). It has been noticed that there are shockingly high figures with the degree colleges leaving behind the parent university to attract PhD aspirants. Apparently, the reasons seemed to be the strengthening of the laboratories and research facilities in these university-affiliated colleges due to which there are more students queuing up for research.


Jindal Global University and Cambridge University Signed a Revolutionizing Education Pact to improve the efficiency of Police Forces in India

O.P. Jindal Global University and Cambridge University signed a formal pact, in the capital today to train and teach IPS officers for a knowledge based policing system in India. The course designed by eminent scholars, researchers, academicians from the field of Law and Crime from Cambridge University and JGU would be for the enrichment of the IPS officer which in turn would benefit the entire police force and the society at large. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has awarded this training contract to Cambridge University working with its Indian partner, O.P. Jindal Global University. To grace the occasion, imminent guests from the law and crime fraternity arrived that bracketed Ashwani Kumar, I.P.S., Director, Central Bureau of Investigation as the Chief guest, who was present along with the dignitaries like Prof. C. Mocrosoft announces resource for schools- Learning Gateway

Microsoft in partnership with Capita Education Services has announced the launch of SIMS Learning Gateway, a simple, cost-effective solution that allows teachers, pupils, parents and government authorities to access information about learners' and monitor their progress.

The Learning Gateway is an outstanding resource for schools, Local Authorities and parents, giving them ready access to information about the progress of students. The SIMS Learning Gateway can enable Local Authority officers to view certain data, such as which students are absent from school without permission or more detailed information on individual students. This could reduce a school's reporting requirements to the Authority and improve the accuracy and immediacy of information shared, as all records can be accessed directly from the school's own SIMS database. An added advantage is that a school can enable access to Local Authority systems via SIMS Learning Gateway, so that parents can apply for uniform grants, free school meals or other benefits via the same web site.

EDUSAT facilities in all schools in Indian state by July 31

The EDUSAT facilities will be set up in all Government schools in the Indian State Kerala by July 31.

According to E.T. Mohammed Basheer, Education Minister of the state, the Government is considering the idea to acquire equipment for EDUSAT facilities from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The Government is also considering providing funds for aided and unaided schools. Interactive terminals as part of EDUSAT programme have been set up at 56 centres. A CD library will have to be set up in all school libraries. Of these, 100 CDs will be on subjects in the SSLC examinations. These CDs worth Rs.30,000 will be provided for Rs.6,000.

300 schools to be established by Zee across country

Zee group, known for providing entertainment and news, recently, announced that it plans to set up 50 schools in just one year across the country and aims to set up 300 schools by 2015. The Chairman of the group, Subash Chandra, chairman of the group, mentioned in a statement that within a year the group has set up 50 schools and that it is a strong step being taken towards enhancement of the country's human capital by making children realise their own respective potential. The company had already laid out an investment of INR 350 crore for setting up schools and developing innovative learning content. Zee School aims to reach the 300-school mark across the country by 2015.
