India Ranks 2nd Globally in Future Job Market Readiness in QS Skills Index 2025

Future Job Market

India has been recognised as second top nation globally in preparing for future job market demands, excelling in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies, and green industries. This achievement is highlighted in the inaugural QS World Future Skills Index, published by UK-based education firm QS, which evaluates the readiness of countries to meet evolving global workforce needs.

Ranked 25th overall, India is categorised as a “future skills contender,” reflecting its significant progress in equipping its workforce for upcoming challenges. Notably, the country ranks second globally in the “future of work” metric with a score of 99.1, trailing only behind the United States, which secured a perfect 100.

QS Index: Assessing Global Readiness

The QS World Future Skills Index categorizes economies into four tiers: aspiring, practitioner, contender, and pioneer, based on their performance. The rankings were derived from an extensive analysis of:

  • Skills fit: The alignment between education systems and industry requirements.
  • Academic readiness: The capacity of education systems to deliver forward-looking skills.
  • Future of work: The ability of job markets to recruit for in-demand roles.
  • Economic transformation: Readiness for skills-driven economic growth.

The evaluation covered over 190 countries, analysing 280 million job postings, five million employer skill requirements, 5,000 universities, and 17.5 million research papers.

Key Strengths and Challenges

India’s strong performance is attributed to its vibrant innovation ecosystem, growing AI integration, and readiness to recruit for digital roles. However, the report also highlights critical challenges, including:

  • A mismatch between academic curricula and industry demands in AI, digital, and green skills.
  • Limited access to higher education for the youth.
  • Insufficient emphasis on sustainability in both education and industry.
  • Low spending on research and development (0.6% of GDP compared to the global average of 2.7%).

These gaps reflect India’s struggle to align research and industry efforts with global trends, such as sustainable practices and green technologies.

Calls for Education Reform

To bridge these gaps, the report emphasises the need to expand access to tertiary education, particularly in skills-intensive fields, and to introduce modular education pathways that align graduates with industry needs. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and initiatives like ULLAS (Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society) are seen as critical frameworks for driving these reforms.

PM Modi Applauds Achievement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded India’s ranking, calling it a proud moment for the nation. In a post on X, he stated: “This is heartening to see! Over the last decade, our Government has worked on strengthening our youth by equipping them with skills that enable them to become self-reliant and create wealth. We have also leveraged the power of technology to make India a hub for innovation and enterprise. The insights from the QS World Future Skills Index are valuable as we progress towards prosperity and youth empowerment.”

Workforce Challenges and Future Opportunities

Despite the motivating recognition, India faces significant workforce challenges. A study by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in September 2024 revealed a shortfall in skilled workers, with demand at 103 million versus a supply of 74 million.

Emerging sectors like healthcare, semiconductor manufacturing, green jobs, drone technology, and AI are driving the demand for specialized skills. However, only a fraction of India’s workforce meets employability standards, as reported by the World Economic Forum and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Towards a Skilled Future

To address these gaps, experts advocate for targeted skilling initiatives, better academic-industry collaboration, and policies promoting sustainable economic growth. India’s demographic advantage and proactive reforms could position it as a global leader in future-ready skills, ensuring sustainable development and robust economic transformation.

Before this appointment, Joshi served as the Chief Secretary of Manipur, a position he assumed in May 2023 amid escalating ethnic tensions in the state. His tenure was marked by efforts to stabilise the region during a period of significant unrest.

Vineet Joshi has previously held the position of Director-General of the National Testing Agency (NTA), overseeing major entrance examinations such as the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main. Ajinkya Jain

Physics Wallah (PW), a prominent Indian edtech unicorn, has appointed Ajinkya Jain as its Group General Counsel, Company Secretary, and Compliance Officer. This strategic hire comes as PW prepares for a potential $400 million to $500 million initial public offering (IPO) in 2025.

Ajinkya Jain, an alumnus of the Central India College of Law, Nagpur, and a member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), brings extensive experience in legal affairs, corporate governance, and compliance. His expertise is expected to be instrumental as PW navigates its expansion and innovation in the education sector.

Alakh Pandey, CEO and Founder of Physics Wallah, said, “Ajinkya’s experience in legal and corporate governance will be invaluable as we expand and innovate in the education space.”

A Proven Track Record in IPOs and M&As

Before joining PW, Jain led the IPO of Unicommerce eSolutions Ltd in August 2024 and served as Associate Director – Group Company Secretary at AceVector Limited (Formerly Snapdeal Limited). He played key roles in significant merger and acquisition activities at PharmEasy, including the acquisitions of Medlife and Thyrocare, and the filing of the Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) for PharmEasy.

His appointment follows PW’s recent $210 million funding round led by Hornbill Capital, doubling its valuation to $2.8 billion. The company has raised a total of $310 million to date from investors including Lightspeed Ventures, WestBridge, and GSV Ventures.

In preparation for its anticipated IPO, PW has reportedly finalised Axis Capital, Kotak Mahindra Capital, Goldman Sachs, and JP Morgan as bankers for the proposed public listing.

AICTE’s NEAT 4.0 Focuses on Emerging Tech, Drops Overpriced EdTech Products

Edtech

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched NEAT 4.0, the latest phase of its National Education Alliance for Technology, with a sharp focus on affordability and innovation. Unlike its previous edition, NEAT 4.0 onboarded fewer EdTech companies, prioritising value-for-money solutions while eliminating overpriced offerings.

As part of this initiative, 22 EdTech companies signed MoUs with AICTE, offering 40 innovative products across cutting-edge domains like artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, semiconductors, 5G technology, and augmented reality (AR). These products aim to address skill gaps, enhance employability, and align education with industry demands.

Stringent Screening Process
AICTE has introduced a rigorous multi-round evaluation process to ensure only credible and affordable EdTech products make it to the NEAT portal. Companies are assessed on technical, financial, and ethical grounds, with a strong emphasis on affordability. AICTE Chairman TG Sitharam said, “We reject companies offering overpriced products. The value, quality, and financial integrity of the product are critical in our evaluation process.”

Inclusive Access Model
NEAT’s inclusivity model mandates that for every four products sold on the NEAT portal, EdTech companies provide the fifth product for free. These free products are distributed to economically disadvantaged students in remote areas, ensuring equitable access to education technology.

Reduced Participation but Greater Focus
In comparison to NEAT 3.0, which partnered with 58 EdTech companies offering 100 products, NEAT 4.0’s reduced numbers reflect a strategic shift towards quality over quantity. Experts attribute the decline to stricter affordability criteria and a more thorough vetting process.

Diverse Categories in NEAT 4.0
NEAT 4.0 introduces innovative learning solutions in key areas, enabling students to upskill and reskill to meet industry demands. Some of the newly added categories include:

  • AI, ML, robotics, and drones
  • AR/VR/MR and gamification
  • Semiconductors and 5G technology
  • Biomedical engineering and quantum computing
  • Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), management, and faculty development

Additional offerings include e-content, psychometric assessments, certification courses, vocational training, language learning, and tools for design thinking and coding. These courses aim to cater to diverse learning needs, enhancing employability and bridging skill gaps.

A Legacy of Impact
NEAT 3.0, launched in January 2022 by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, provided free EdTech course coupons worth over ₹253 crore to more than 12 lakh socially and economically disadvantaged students. NEAT 4.0 continues this legacy, ensuring affordability and access remain core principles.

The Way Forward
Through partnerships with 22 EdTech companies, including Ansys Software, Dheya Career Mentors, and Intellipaat Software Solutions, NEAT 4.0 integrates a range of tools and courses on a single platform for learner convenience. These partnerships underline AICTE’s commitment to aligning education with industry needs while maintaining affordability.

Chairman Sitharam remarked, “NEAT brings the best educational products onto a single platform, enabling customized learning experiences for students across diverse regions and backgrounds. This initiative equips learners with future-ready skills aligned with evolving industry requirements.”

UP Rolls Out Social Audit Plan For 1.33 Lakh Schools to Boost Primary Education Standards

Social Audit Plan

To enhance the quality of primary education and promote transparency in school operations, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched an ambitious social audit action plan. The initiative aims to evaluate resources and the implementation of government programs across 1.33 lakh government schools over the next five years.

In the first phase, 20% of these schools, 26,720 in total, will undergo audits by March 31, 2025. The process involves collaboration with state universities for training and supervision, ensuring comprehensive coverage and accuracy.

The education department has enlisted universities like DDU University (Gorakhpur), Subharti University (Meerut), MMM Technological University (Gorakhpur), and Lucknow’s Integral and Lucknow University to provide oversight and training. Each cluster social auditor will oversee audits for ten schools, supported by a facilitator team of 1.6 lakh members.

Director General of School Education (DGSE) Kanchan Verma said, “Universities will ensure impartial and accurate assessments, with full support from the education department.”
