UAE’s Ras Al Khaimah Offers Golden Visa to Education Professionals

Ras Al Khaimah, a prominent emirate within the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has officially launched the Golden Visa Programme for educators, a significant move aimed at enhancing the region’s educational landscape. The initiative, introduced by the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge (RAK DOK), seeks to attract and retain highly qualified educators by offering them long-term residency in the UAE. This programme is part of the emirate’s broader strategy to build a world-class education system and ensure a sustainable and high-quality educational environment for future generations.

The Golden Visa Programme is tailored to meet the needs of two key categories of education professionals: **teachers** and **school leaders**. Qualified teachers employed at private schools within Ras Al Khaimah, as well as senior educational administrators such as school principals, vice-principals, and assistant principals, are eligible to apply. By providing these professionals with a self-sponsorship option, the programme offers them greater stability and professional autonomy while contributing to the overall enhancement of educational standards in the region.

To be considered for the Golden Visa, applicants must meet several criteria. One of the primary requirements is that the candidate must have resided and worked in Ras Al Khaimah for a minimum of three years. In addition, the applicant must hold relevant academic qualifications and demonstrate a measurable positive impact on their school’s performance. The programme seeks to reward and retain educators who have demonstrated excellence in their respective fields and have made meaningful contributions to their schools and the wider educational community.

In addition to these qualifications, applicants must provide a range of supporting documentation, including an official appointment letter, proof of their educational credentials, and confirmation of their employment and residency status. RAK DOK has committed to a streamlined review process to ensure that qualified candidates are processed efficiently, minimizing delays. Once the application is reviewed and confirmed by RAK DOK, the final processing will take place through the UAE Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP).

CBSE Board Exam 2025: Syllabus for 10th and 12th Reduced by 15%, Open-Book Format Introduced

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced significant updates for the CBSE Board Exam 2025, including a 15% syllabus reduction for Classes 10 and 12. The announcement, made by CBSE’s Bhopal regional officer Vikas Kumar Agrawal during a principal’s summit in Indore, underscores a move towards reducing rote memorization and fostering deeper learning.

New Syllabus Framework and Reduced Content Load

The syllabus reduction aligns with CBSE’s evolving educational framework, aiming to give students more room to explore subjects in depth. According to Agrawal, this adjustment will relieve students from excessive content, enhancing their capacity for critical thinking and concept mastery.

Greater Emphasis on Internal Assessment

A notable change is the increased weightage for internal assessments, now accounting for 40% of the final score, with the remaining 60% derived from the final board exams. The internal assessment will cover projects, assignments, and periodic tests, creating a balanced evaluation model. This approach promotes continuous learning and allows students to demonstrate their understanding progressively throughout the year.

Practical Knowledge and Skill-Based Questions in Exams

Reflecting the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, CBSE’s new exam structure will prioritize practical and skill-based knowledge. Approximately 50% of the 2025 exam questions will be application-focused, assessing students’ real-world problem-solving abilities. By moving away from traditional memorization, CBSE aims to cultivate critical thinking and practical skills that align with current educational standards.

Introduction of Digital Assessment and Open-Book Exams

CBSE will continue using digital assessment for select subjects, a practice that has improved grading accuracy and transparency. Additionally, open-book exams will be introduced for subjects like English Literature and Social Science, allowing students to refer to textbooks during the CBSE Board Exam. This shift emphasizes analytical skills and a deeper understanding of concepts, supporting a learning environment that values comprehension over memorization.

Transition to a Two-Term Exam Structure by 2026

For the 2025 academic year, the single-term exam format will remain in place. However, CBSE has confirmed plans to implement a two-term structure starting in the 2025-2026 session. This change aims to provide students with more frequent assessments, helping to manage their studies more effectively and reducing the stress associated with one high-stakes exam.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Inaugurates National Workshop on Higher and Technical Education

Union Minister for Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, inaugurated a two-day National Workshop on Higher and Technical Education, bringing together Secretaries from States and Union Territories, along with senior officials, to discuss the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The workshop, aimed at advancing India’s educational infrastructure and aligning it with global standards, will include 14 technical sessions focusing on NEP challenges, digital governance, capacity building, and financing higher education.

During his address, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized the importance of transforming India into a producing economy, leveraging Industry 4.0, and developing a robust educational infrastructure beyond traditional brick-and-mortar institutions. He highlighted five key focus areas for academic leaders: strengthening public universities with innovative funding, aligning curricula with industry needs, fostering multidisciplinary research, developing academic leadership programs, and revitalizing campus life through non-academic pursuits like sports and arts.

Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, praised Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a globally competitive education system under NEP 2020, which is built on pillars of access, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability. He encouraged states to fully adopt NEP 2020, as it promises to drive economic growth, enhance skill development, and position India as a knowledge superpower.

Shri K. Sanjay Murthy, Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, set the context for the workshop by outlining 20 new guidelines developed to assist universities in aligning with NEP. The workshop aims to promote NEP 2020 across state institutions, enhance India’s global educational competitiveness, and support economic growth through a skilled workforce and innovation-driven ecosystem.

IIFT Celebrates 57th Convocation: Over 650 Graduates Poised to Shape India’s Global Trade Future

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) celebrated its 57th Convocation in New Delhi on Monday, November 11, conferring degrees to over 650 graduates from various programs. The ceremony marked a significant milestone in IIFT’s history and was attended virtually by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal, who delivered an inspiring address to the graduating class.

In his message, Shri Goyal encouraged graduates to stay abreast of new trade agreements, viewing them as opportunities to explore fresh markets and contribute to India’s ambitious target of becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’ with a $2 trillion trade goal. He highlighted sectors like telecom, semiconductors, deep-sea exploration, and space technology as areas where graduates can make impactful contributions. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of ethical business practices and integrating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into their careers, urging the young professionals to approach their roles with a socially responsible and innovative mindset.

The convocation was presided over by IIFT’s Chancellor and Secretary of the Department of Commerce, Shri Sunil Barthwal, who commended the graduates for their dedication. He praised IIFT’s excellence in international business education, evidenced by its top 15 ranking among Indian B-schools by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). Shri Barthwal highlighted IIFT’s achievements, including the establishment of an overseas campus in Dubai, which aims to connect with the Indian diaspora in the UAE and provide a global platform for its educational offerings. He also introduced the Centre for International Negotiations, a new initiative designed to facilitate knowledge exchange among students, government officials, and industry professionals.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul, encouraged the graduates to pursue rewarding careers in international trade. He highlighted the successes of Indian companies on the global stage and underscored the role of cooperatives in strengthening India’s rural economy. Dr. Mehta urged graduates to uphold human values and ethical standards in their careers, while also prioritizing their health and well-being.

National Education Day 2024: Paving the Path to a Self-Reliant, Inclusive India

Education has been a pillar of societal progress and a catalyst for national transformation for generations. On National Education Day, observed every year on November 11, India commemorates the legacy of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the country’s first Education Minister, whose vision laid the foundation for India’s educational philosophy. In an era where global challenges and rapid technological shifts shape the future of work and life, India’s education sector stands as a beacon of potential, innovation, and reform.

Since independence, India has made strides toward creating a strong foundation for educational access and equity. Key milestones, such as the 86th Amendment to the Constitution through Article 21-A, ensure free and compulsory education for children between the ages of six and fourteen. This legal mandate, reinforced by the Right to Education (RTE) Act of 2009, which came into effect on April 1, 2010, envisions an educational system that meets national standards and serves as a cornerstone for inclusivity.

Building an Inclusive, Forward-Looking Education System

Over recent years, the Government of India has implemented transformative policies and initiatives aimed at creating an inclusive, accessible, and quality-driven educational framework. Through legal mandates and targeted programs, India is paving the way for every child, regardless of background, to access learning opportunities that can change their futures and shape the nation’s trajectory.

National Education DayKey Initiatives in Indian Education Reform:

1. National Education Policy (NEP) 2020

The National Education Policy 2020 represents one of the most significant overhauls in India’s educational landscape in decades. Approved in July 2020, NEP 2020 reimagines education with a future-facing, flexible curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking, experiential learning, and digital literacy. By aligning education with global standards, the NEP aims to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the 21st century.

2. PM SHRI Schools Initiative

Through the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) initiative, launched in 2022, India seeks to upgrade over 14,500 schools across the country. These institutions will serve as model schools, demonstrating the core principles of NEP 2020, such as cognitive development, creative thinking, and value-based education. With a projected budget of ₹27,360 crore over five years, PM SHRI will lay the groundwork for future-ready education.

3. Samagra Shiksha

Recognizing the diversity of India’s population, Samagra Shiksha, launched in 2021, aims to create inclusive classroom environments that address students’ unique needs across all regions and backgrounds. By fostering holistic development, this initiative ensures that no child is left behind in the journey toward educational empowerment.

4. ULLAS

Literacy is a stepping stone to empowerment, and ULLAS, launched for 2022-2027, extends educational opportunities to adults who missed out on formal schooling. Also known as Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram (New India Literacy Programme – NILP), this program aligns with NEP 2020’s objectives and enables individuals aged 15 and above to engage with foundational learning, contributing actively to their communities and the economy.

5. NIPUN Bharat

Launched in 2021, NIPUN Bharat focuses on foundational literacy and numeracy, aiming to ensure every child achieves basic reading and math skills by Grade 3. This program addresses the essential learning requirements of young students, building a strong foundation for lifelong education.

6. Vidyanjali and Vidya Pravesh

Vidyanjali promotes volunteerism and community participation in education, connecting schools with local supporters and industry leaders. Vidya Pravesh, on the other hand, provides a playful, welcoming introduction to formal education for Grade-I children, emphasizing joy and curiosity as the first steps in learning.

7. SWAYAM Plus and DIKSHA

Digital platforms like SWAYAM Plus and DIKSHA exemplify India’s focus on integrating technology with education. SWAYAM Plus, launched in 2024, enhances higher education by enabling credit recognition for industry-relevant courses, while DIKSHA empowers teachers with access to training resources, encouraging professional growth and innovation in classrooms.

8. NISHTHA

The NISHTHA initiative, started in 2019, is a comprehensive teacher training program that has evolved to meet current demands through online platforms like DIKSHA. With its recent expansion into secondary education, NISHTHA strengthens the backbone of the educational system – teachers – by fostering leadership and continuous professional development.

9. NIRF Ranking

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), launched by the Ministry of Education in September 2015, marked a pivotal step toward enhancing the quality and accessibility of higher education in India. NIRF introduced a structured and transparent system for assessing and ranking universities, colleges, and other institutions, fostering healthy competition and encouraging improvements in education and infrastructure.

10. PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme to support meritorious students by providing financial assistance for quality higher education. This scheme offers education loans for students admitted to the top 860 institutions across India, benefiting over 22 lakh students each year. With a budget allocation of ₹3,600 crore from 2024-25 to 2030-31, the scheme aims to assist an additional seven lakh students. Implemented through a fully digital, transparent, and student-centric platform, PM-Vidyalaxmi ensures easy access and smooth interoperability for students nationwide.

Investing in Education: The Foundation of Progress

India’s 2024-25 budget underscores the country’s commitment to strengthening education infrastructure. With an allocation of ₹73,498 crore for the Department of School Education & Literacy, the budget reflects a 19.56% increase from the previous fiscal year. Furthermore, historic investments in autonomous bodies, including ₹9,302 crore for Kendriya Vidyalayas and ₹5,800 crore for Navodaya Vidyalayas, highlight a focus on excellence and inclusivity within the public education system.

In higher education, the increased allocation to the Department of Higher Education (₹47,619.77 crore for FY 2024-25) demonstrates a balanced approach that supports both broad-based educational access and targeted skill-building initiatives. The PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme, for instance, provides financial assistance to meritorious students, ensuring that economic barriers do not obstruct access to premier institutions.

Encouraging Growth and Inclusivity: Insights from AISHE 2021-22

The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) for 2021-22 reveals promising trends, with rising enrollment in higher education, particularly among female students. The Gender Parity Index (GPI) for higher education has achieved a milestone of 1.01, indicating a near-equal representation of male and female students. Enrollment in STEM disciplines and the rise of minority representation illustrate the diversity and dynamism that now characterize Indian education.

Towards a Future of Innovation and Inclusivity

As India commemorates National Education Day 2024, the nation stands united in its pursuit of a comprehensive, inclusive, and globally competitive education system. From primary to higher education, from literacy programs to advanced digital platforms, each initiative reflects the determination to ensure that every child, youth, and adult has access to learning and growth opportunities.

Odisha to Implement NEP 2020 in State Universities from this Academic Year

In a major step forward, the Odisha government has announced that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 will be implemented across all state-run universities and affiliated colleges, effective this academic year. This transformative move, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, aims to modernise Odisha’s education system, making it more flexible, inclusive, and employment-oriented.

As part of the NEP framework, four-year undergraduate programs will replace the traditional three-year courses, offering students progressive certification: a certificate after the first year, a diploma after the second, a degree after the third, and an honours degree upon completing the fourth year. This structure is designed to enhance both academic flexibility and employment prospects for students in the state.

The state has introduced a credit-based framework aligned with University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, enabling students to earn credits through skill development, internships, community service, and extracurriculars such as NCC and NSS. By participating in these activities, students can enrich their learning experience while enhancing their employability.

Further, the NEP introduces significant flexibility for students to complete their degrees over seven years, with options for multiple entries and exits. This feature allows students to return to their studies after a break or transition to new areas of interest without losing credits.

Aligned with NEP 2020, the Odisha government is also committed to enhancing the quality, autonomy, and inclusivity of its higher education system. The policy encourages research and innovation through practical learning and skill-building internships, aligning course content with industry needs for greater employability.

The state government has approved two skill development programs, 112 multidisciplinary courses, 14 vocational courses, 56 value-added courses, and 84 additional skill-building courses, according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).  These initiatives, along with a model syllabus developed for 40 core undergraduate degree courses, are intended to make higher education in Odisha both rigorous and relevant to today’s job market.

IIT Kanpur Honours Prof. Rajat Moona with Institute Fellow Award 2023

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has conferred Professor Rajat Moona with the prestigious Institute Fellow Award 2023, recognising his outstanding contributions to education, research, and technological development.

Prof. Moona began his tenure at IIT Kanpur in 1991 as a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Over the years, he has supervised numerous PhD scholars and taught various courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His innovative work in computerising the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) processes and developing e-governance applications has significantly streamlined operations.

In 2017, Prof. Moona was appointed as the founding director of the Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai, where he played a significant role in establishing the institute’s permanent campus.

Nationally, Prof. Moona has been integral to various projects, including the Electronic Toll Collection system, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), and the National Supercomputing Mission. His leadership in designing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and contributing IT solutions for the Election Commission of India underscores his commitment to enhancing the country’s technological infrastructure.

Since October 2022, Prof. Moona has been serving as the Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), where he continues to inspire future generations of engineers and researchers.

The Institute Fellow Award, instituted by IIT Kanpur in 2005, honours individuals who have significantly contributed to the institute’s growth. Prof. Moona’s recognition as an Institute Fellow 2023 reflects his impactful legacy and influence on future generations of engineers and researchers.

India Leads in QS Asia Rankings 2025 with Focus on Research, IIT Delhi Rises to Top Spot Among Indian Institutes

The recently released QS World University Rankings: Asia 2025 showcases a strong presence from India, marking it as the most represented country with 163 universities in the rankings. This recognition underscores India’s growing focus on research and global academic reputation, bolstered by initiatives like the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The rankings, which featured 984 universities across 25 higher education systems, assess institutions based on 11 indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, and research productivity. In the rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) emerged as the highest-ranked Indian institution at 44th in Asia, with six Indian universities securing places in the top 100. Following IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay achieved the 48th spot, while IIT Madras is positioned at 56th. Other Indian institutions in the top 100 include IIT Kharagpur (60), Indian Institute of Science – Bengaluru (62), and IIT Kanpur (67).

In the South Asian category, IIT Delhi also clinched the top spot among universities from India and Pakistan. Notably, seven of the top ten universities in this category hail from India, with IIT Kanpur and Pakistan’s National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) Islamabad sharing the 6th position.

India’s performance in the QS Asia Rankings highlights its advancement in research productivity, reflected in the rankings’ criteria, which emphasize academic and employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, research output, and international engagement. While China, with 135 institutions, leads in the number of universities in the top ten, India’s focus on research is proving effective in enhancing its global standing, particularly for its elite institutions such as the IITs and the Indian Institute of Science.

The QS Asia University Rankings, published annually since 2009, recognise Asia’s top universities through a refined methodology tailored to the region. While similar to the QS World University Rankings, this approach includes additional metrics and adapted weightings to reflect the strengths of Asian institutions better.

The rankings evaluate universities using 11 key indicators: academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (20%), faculty/student ratio (10%), international research network (10%), citations per paper (10%), papers per faculty (5%), staff with a PhD (5%), and the proportions of inbound (2.5%) and outbound (2.5%) exchange students.

This year, Peking University retained its leading position, followed by the University of Hong Kong in second and the National University of Singapore in third. Mainland China, with 135 institutions in the rankings, is the second most represented country and dominates the top ten. India, however, leads overall with the highest number of institutions and notable improvements in research output. 

As Indian universities continue to prioritise research and collaboration, this robust representation in the QS Asia Rankings positions India as a significant academic hub in Asia, contributing to its growing influence in global higher education.
