The last date to submit nominations for admission under the new category of seats was 31st December 2020 but a majority of colleges have not submitted any names of candidates for consideration of the University committee. In response to this, the varsity has decided to cancel the scheme and roll it back.

As per the guidelines shared by the Delhi University in its 21st December notification, the college principals were empowered to select students for admission to these 5 courses. However, the university’s guidelines didn’t provide any specific procedure under which candidates can be offered admission under the 5 additional seats. Moreover, the candidates chosen for admission under these new seats were to be provided 10% relaxation in cut-offs as well.

The objective of having such a reservation is to boost the morale of the students in the rural areas who are deprived of coaching and digital courses that are easily available in urban areas, which is why the students of rural schools are failing to compete with their urban counterparts, the minister said. Students passing matriculation examinations from state-run schools will be eligible to avail the quota irrespective of their economic background, Dash said.

The cabinet approved the formation of a high-powered committee under the chairmanship of a retired Orissa High Court judge to formulate within three months the modalities for implementing the reservation.
