With the COVID-19 outbreak spreading across the nation, the Central government has imposed a lockdown till May 3, 2020. All the educational institutions are facing an unprecedented halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The crisis is huge for the educational institutions as they have to shift their entire focus on online education. The schools are finding new ways to teach students in this crisis. The ed-tech firms are trying to provide all type of solutions; educational institutions need to tackle the pandemic. From pre-schools to Universities every organization is directly or indirectly dependent on ed-tech firms.

A webinar was organized by Elets Technomedia and digitalLEARNING Magazine on “Developing effective learning outside the classroom during COVID-19 Confirmation” with some eminent speakers from the education industry. The speakers presented their views and described how the education sector can overcome the crisis.

Speaking over the issue, Dr Shuchi Sharma, IAS, Secretary, Higher and Technical Education, Government of Rajasthan, said “We must go for more and more e-learning sessions. E-lectures must be the potential solution in this crisis. E-lectures have brought great opportunity and will boost the traditional way of teaching. The bigger challenge is how to conduct exams online in the coming days if the lockdown extends.”

 

She also said the government must think to conduct e-classes in universities as plenty of e-content available.

She even said, “Everyone is going for hit and trial method. There will be a great number of online courses in the coming days.”

She also said there are limitations of online classrooms and everything cannot be taught virtually.

She also emphasized on turning classrooms to discussion forms so that no student will feel left out.

Sharma also said the technology will bring new dimensions of teaching and boost new opportunities for teachers.

Dr R. A. Gupta, Vice-Chancellor, Rajasthan Technical University, said “E-learning is very important for technical universities. We have asked all the lecturers to record their lectures and upload them on Youtube. Students can do most of the things through e-learning. E-learning gives lots of exposures to students. The connectivity between teachers and students has improved a lot during e-learning classes.”

He also said the university has urged the faculties to upload their notes online so that others can get the benefit.

He also said E-learning gives lots of exposures to students and will boost teachers to prepare for the classes beyond the syllabus. The technology is boon for higher studies as every content is easily available for students.

Dr H.D. Charan, Vice-Chancellor, Bikaner Technical University, said “Corona crisis can be seen as a boon for e-learning. The govt has provided a large number of digital boards which has helped us to record a large number of lectures. E-learning can add value and will be a good addition to the higher education sector.”

He even said blackboard teaching cannot be replaced by any other means.

He also said the university has conducted online workshops for teachers very successfully. Online tests have been done through Google which was very popular among the students.

He also said teachers will play an important role when the institutions will be re-opened and a new tern will emerge after the COVID crisis.

Raghav Gupta, Managing Director – India & APAC, Coursera, said “The impact of COVID is very significant on Higher Education. Creating an online course is easy but providing quality content is not easy. Creating high-quality content is a different ball game together. Colleges in this crisis need Real-time communication moves, online education platforms, Learning management systems, online assessment, or plagiarism control systems. We all must focus on both offline and online systems.”

He also said it will be beneficial for all to keep 20-30 pc online education in our syllabus.

According to Raghav, the industry is changing rapidly and colleges must adopt industry-oriented courses that will be beneficial for students. He also said colleges must adopt a blended model of teaching.

He also said curation is important for all the colleges. Over 1.5lakh students are learning on Coursera.

NPAT Exam 2020 postponed, check on npat.in

In the view of COVID-19 crisis, NMIMS University has postponed the NPAT 2020 examination dates. According to the official website, the NPAT 2020 examination has been postponed to May 18 and 22, 2020.

Candidates can visit the official website for any updates – npat.in.

According to the notification, the NPAT 2020 examination was earlier scheduled to be conducted on May 9 and 10, 2020. According to the notification, the NPAT 2020 examination dates have been postponed due to the COVID-19.

As per the revised schedule, the candidates who had opted to appear for the examination on May 9, 2020, will be appearing for the examination on May 18, 2020, and those who had opted to appear for the exam on May 10, 2020, will now be appearing for the examination on May 22, 2020.

The last date to apply for NPAT 2020 is May 10, 2020. Candidates who have opted to appear for the examination must note that the test will be conducted in the online mode.

UGC to provide guidelines to colleges over exams

Keeping the hardships of students in mind, University Grants Commission (UGC) is expected to release a detailed set of guidelines and academic measures for colleges and universities this week.

These guidelines will help varsities and affiliated colleges chart out a path towards the conduct of online exams and restart of new academic session. As reported earlier, the two expert committees setup by the regulator have submitted their recommendation on measures required to conduct of academics in higher education institutions across the country.

The commission will frame actionable guidelines for colleges and universities across the country to help them commence the academic activities and also hold final exams for the students which have been delayed.

The first committee was headed by Professor RC Kuhad, former member UGC and Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Haryana, which was looking into the matter of evaluating issues that higher education institutions are facing due to Coronavirus pandemic with regards to issues related to examinations and academic calendar. As per reports, the committee has recommended starting of the new academic session from September 2020 instead of July 2020.

On similar lines, a second committee was also formed under the guidance of professor Nageshwar Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) to recommend methods of promoting online education and better adopting of the same by teachers and students amid the on-going lockdown.

SSC MTS Paper 2 and SSC CGL Tier 3 Results postponed

Amidst COVID-19 outbreak, Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has postponed SSC MTS Paper 2 Result 2019 and SSC CGL Tier 3 Result 2018. Earlier, the commission had scheduled the release date on 30 April 2020 for SSC MTS Paper 2 Exam 2019 and 8 May 2020 for SSC CGL Tier 3 2018 Result.

As per the notice, the process of evaluation and preparation of results has been postponed due to the situation arising out of COVID-19 pandemic. The result of Junior Engineer (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Quantity Surveying & Contracts) Examination, 2018 (Paper-II) could not be declared on 09-04-2020.

The fresh dates for the declaration of results will announce in due course.

All candidates are advised to keep visiting the official website for the latest updates. Many exams and results have been postponed due to coronavirus pandemic. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said that the dates of SSC Exams will be rescheduled after 3 April 2020.

CBSE officials provide road maps to school principals

As per media reports, CBSE’s Controller of Examination, Dr Sanyam Bhardwaj shared the board’s roadmap for resuming evaluation work to the school principals. He also shared information regarding conducting the remaining exams as well as a new plan for classes 10 and 12 syllabus for the new academic session.

CBSE is expected to release an official notice regarding the changes.

Dr. Bhardwaj said that the board is planning to resume the evaluation work within four days of the removal of the lockdown in the country. With this, the board is also considering the feasibility of work from home for the teachers.

Dr. Bhardwaj also said that the dates will be shared after the approval from the Ministry of Human Resource Development based on the situation.

He has also clarified that the board would not be deleting any chapters from syllabus. Instead, chunks of the existing chapters would be removed to reduce the syllabus for classes 9 to 12.

CBSE has also asked schools to monitor the attendance of the students for online classes. He has said that 75% attendance should be made mandatory. Further, he said that for online classes, CBSE has advised schools to use government portals for mass teaching. Portals like Diksha as well as various broadcast channels are widely available for mass learning.

CBSE chairman Anita Karwal appointed as school education secretary

In a major shuffle, Ministry of Human Resource Development has appointed CBSE chairman Anita Karwal as Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy. She is a 1988-batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre.

Karwal will join the Ministry as its Secretary after two years of being the Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has also assigned Khare of additional charge of the post of Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on appointment of Ravi Mittal IAS as Secretary Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

In August, 2017 Anita Karwal was appointed as the Chairperson of CBSE, which is one of the biggest school education boards of the country. As the Chairperson, she was the Chief Executive of the Board and was assisted by eight Heads of Departments: the Secretary, Professor & Director (Academics, Research, Training and Innovation), Controller of Examinations, Director (Edusat. & Vocational Education), Director (CTET & JNVST), Director (IT), Regional Directors and Executive Director (JAB).

Under the aegis of Karwal CBSE has conducted three annual board exams for class 10 and 12. She has also managed entrance exam for a year in 2017 before the National Testing Agency was formed.

UP govt asks private schools not to charge advance fee from parents

Keeping the COVID-19 in mind, schools in Uttar Pradesh will not charge advance fee and transportation fee form students.

The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP) has directed schools not to ask for advance fee or charge transportation fee during the lockdown period.

The Parishad has also given instructions that schools will not cut names of students from the enrollment register who fail to pay fee on time.

Earlier, on April 21, the state Education Minister Dr. Dinesh Sharma had tweeted that schools have been instructed not to charge transportation fee for the duration the schools were closed.

The ambit of the order was increased to include advance tuition fee too.

Several state governments have taken similar decision and directed schools, private and government, not to demand advance school fee from students during the lockdown period.

Meanwhile, UPMSP, to minimize the loss of studies, has begun online classes for students through WhatsApp.

CBSE extends deadline for schools over affiliation

Keeping the hardship in view, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has extended the deadline for application submission by schools for affiliation.

The board has now decided to extend the deadline till June and the last date for schools seeking affiliation to submit their application is June 30, 2020.

Earlier, the last date of submission was April 30, 2020.

Schools whose application for affiliation / upgradation / extension are under process, are required to submit online clarification / compliance / documents to the Board within 30 days of communication.

CBSE accepts application for affiliation under various categories like Fresh Affiliation, Upgradation, and Extension of Affiliation for session 2021-22.

With a second extension in the deadline, schools will have ample time to submit their applications and complete the post-application procedure.

Earlier the board had issued a cautionary notice about misleading messages through WhatsApp, email, and other mediums which claimed to offer guidance to schools about the affiliation process. The messages seemed to come from CBSE affiliation advisor.

NTA to close application process next week for exams

In view of the hardships faced by the students due to COVID-19 pandemic, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has extended application process for many exams. Now, the NTA has decided to close application process for various exams next week.

The exams for which the registration window will close on April 30 are National Council for Hotel Management (NCHM) JEE 2020, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Admission Test 2020 for PhD and Open MAT (MBA), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) 2020 and Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Exam (JNUEE) 2020.

Candidates can submit the filled application forms at the official website i.e. nta.ac.in.

Concerned candidates are suggested to fill and submit the application forms available online before the deadline.

The exam dates and date for downloading the admit card will be notified by the agency later.

Candidates who will appear for CSIR NET and UGC NET can fill and submit the online application form till May 15 and May 16, respectively.

For All India AYUSH post graduate entrance test the last date for submission of application is May 31.

HRD Minister to address queries of parents and teachers

According to report, the Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal is all set to hold a webinar for the parents of the students who are currently stuck at home due to COVID-19 lockdown.

In the webinar, HRD minister will answer queries of the parents about online studies during the lockdown and also discuss the academic future of the students. The Live Webinar will be hosted by HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal on 27th April – Monday at 1 PM in the afternoon.

Currently, many parents and students have expressed their concerns about the delay in holding of board exams as well as entrance exams for medical, engineering and other programmes.

The HRD ministry has released a teaser for the same on its social media platforms. In the social media post about the webinar, HRD ministry has invited queries and questions from parents, which the minister can address during the live session.

Earlier, with the national lockdown due to Coronavirus pandemic in order since nearly a month now and schools and higher education institutions being shutdown, HRD Ministry has also launched several initiatives to ensure that students do not suffer because of the lockdown and that their academic process stay on course with no loss.
