Jyothsana Gururaj.S: Technology cannot replace teachers

Jyothsana Gururaj.S

As we entered the month of March 2020, Holi the festival of colours was celebrated with much joy and fervour by all students and with the syllabus being successfully completed; revision for II Semester exams were in full swing when we received the news of Covid -19 outbreak in Maharashtra and rest of the country. The Government as a precautionary measure decided to close the schools for students by ending our plans abruptly.

March-April is the exam season across India and shutting down during these crucial months can highly impact academic growth of the students. Parents were confused about how the revisions will go on and about the final exams. We assured them that we shall look for an alternative to keep the students occupied at home and learn simultaneously. I have told parents to take this as a positive sign and spend time with their children and help them in academics apart from other activities.

As the saying goes “Technology cannot replace teachers, but tech in hands of great teachers can be transformational.” We planned to send the revision and homework’s in the form of videos and pictures through WhatsApp. Our plan was successfully implemented by the teachers and this initiative was appreciated by all parents.

Our school has Pre-Primary section and Primary Section up to Std III for the Academic Session 2019-20. According to the Government directives final exams were cancelled but still our teachers are continuing to send daily fun activities including creative art and fun organised games and also activities related to academics so that children are in touch with the subjects and also to make them occupied in the social isolation period.

This also helps kids who are impatient & playful and need their daily dose of playing outdoors which is prohibited at the moment. I suggested the teachers to send the video messages to interact with the children to establish virtual bonding. The teachers learnt to design the activities and prepared videos to send to children. They were open to the suggestions and begun researching to find out different activities. Teachers are taking this situation in a positive manner.

Parents are also happily sharing the pictures and activities of the quality time spent with their children with us. We are posting the same on WhatsApp and Facebook page of our school to encourage parents and children to actively participate in this time of crisis.

This situation is not permanent but as an Educationist I say “Positivity Always Wins” and we educators together with students and parents hope that we shall overcome this crisis by abiding by the rules set by the Government and taking care of self and others.

HAPPY SOCIAL DISTANCING!!!

BVDU College tackling COVID-19 digitally: Dr Anand Bhalerao

Dr Anand Bhalerao

In the wake of COVID -19 pandemic which has shaken the entire world, the entire population is paralyzed due to the lockdown in order to avoid the spread of the virus. Industry and academia are amongst the mostly hit areas. The concept of “work from home” is most effective in such situations as it ensures productivity, in case of industry (especially for IT sector), but is also equally effective for academics. As the lectures and practical sessions cannot be conducted in the conventional manner, certain educational platforms like Edhitch are proving an effective method for instructing the students.

Though face to face classroom teaching is withheld, our faculties are continuing their job with more rigor and attention. For BVDU College of Engineering, excellence is the motto even in the adverse situation.

Measures taken at BVDUCOE, Pune:

Some essential measures are taken at the institute level are targeted to minimize the academic loss for the students without compromising the quality of teaching. At BVDUCOE, we are using following methods to ensure the same:

1.Lectures: Lectures are conducted and captured by the faculty members, at his/her residence using a high resolution video camera (almost every smartphone can be used), in the conventional manner using whiteboard.

Screen recorders are used to capture laptop/desktop, with voice over, for topics requiring PowerPoint presentations.

The high quality video files are not suitable for uploading directly to any distribution platform like Edhitch, WhatsApp Messenger (due to limited bandwidth at faculty residence), hence these videos are compressed to a compact video format like Matroska and then uploaded to Edhitch Resource panel/WhatsAppMessenger. Students are instructed to watch the videos and ask questions, if any, using the Discussion panel in Edhitch or WhatsApp group

2.Practical Sessions/ Experiments: Simulation demos (wherever possible) are also recorded and processed in the similar manner using screen capture tools and uploaded to Edhitch/WhatsApp Messenger.

Assignments: Assignments based on the topics discussed in lectures are uploaded to the Assignment Panel in Edhitch. Assignments cover, MCQ, quizzes and subjective questions. The students are expected to complete their assignments within a stipulated deadline.

3.Notes/ Lecture Material: Notes and PowerPoint slides in PDF format are made available to the students via Edhitch Resource panel.

Outcome of such AI-based programs helps in identifying the strong and weak points so that further corrective measures in every aspect can be taken for continuous student improvement. Though there are holidays but course is progressing as per the target lesson plan. Online activity in last two weeks has increased by 50%.

BVDU College of Engineering (Deemed University) Pune has been using Edhitch platform for last four years. Its machine learning based algorithms help us make the right decisions about student learning, course planning and placement of students at the right place based on their performance, skill and interest.

Digital learning is the only option in this hour of crisis.

Dr Jyothi Reddy Ghanta: Coronavirus -The pandemic or a plethora of possibilities

Dr Jyothi Reddy Ghanta

Not long ago, in the month of October 2019, The Shri Ram Universal School came up with the mega-initiative‘ AcharyaDevo Bhava’ where educators, educational leaders and school managements came together to discuss the importance of a teacher and the need to provide the necessary skills and tools to the teacher of the future to wade through the uncertain times ahead.

Come February 2020, the so called uncertainty presents itself. The world has come to a sudden stand still. In stages we have shut down normalcy and now we are in the confines of our homes. Needless to say the impact has been across sectors, yet the most affected one has been the one that nestles our future citizens and works to prepare them for life – Schools.

We at The Shri Ram Universal School, have been pro-active in many ways. Our use of technology to share the weekly and monthly learning of the child has ensured that parents are attuned to regular updates sent online. We share good read material, links to educational sites etc to provide additional resources. So, with the outbreak of Covid -19 that led to an early closure of schools for the academic year, we as a school simply continued our practices providing qualitative task sheets and learning material to our students ensuring they are productively engaged. They were also encouraged to utilize their time at home by reorganizing themselves, helping in household chores, spending quality time with family strengthening relationships.

What about the final exams? Our students were in the middle of their year-end exams, focusing their energies on preparing for these final assessments. Half way through the directive is issued to shut down all educational institutions and promote all children to the next grade based on pro-rata grading. It seemed like the logical thing to do for the school, the educators and even school leaders. But what about the students? Would that not demoralize them? With this thought in mind, we as a school proposed the model of home examinations. An audio file shared by me as the leader of the school, explaining the rationale behind the decision led to the fruitful co-operation of our partners in education, the parent community. Together we were successful in taking the right decision andreinforcing values of integrity and trust in our Shriites. The attendance of students attempting exams from home has been promising indeed. Our efforts were acknowledged by the parent community and emails expressing appreciation and gratitude poured in which was an affirmation of our efforts in the right direction.

Now, as the time draws closer for the new academic session to commence, the surmounting and most valid question that faces us is – What next?

This is where the real leap into the world of technology happens. Our teachers are skilled up to embrace this challenge with open arms and befriend the latest trends in teaching and learning. While thousands of e-learning companies have volunteered to provide free services to keep students engaged, our teachers are preparing lessons online, compiling relevant resources, structuring lessons, presenting them with a personal touch of their voice and of course a lot of love. No machine can ever replace teachers, but can assist them in translating their passion into progressive learning for their students.

The pandemic is not here to stay for sure, but it indeed would leave us more adept, agile and enriched with a plethora of possibilities to prepare ourselves and our student community for an uncertain future in the real sense.

Due to epidemic of coronavirus, Symbiosis Skills Universities, Indore and Pune have sent all students to s their homes. The staff is also working from home.

Students are extremely enthusiastic and we have received great responses for these online learning initiatives.

Gujarat High Court saves DPS East

Gujarat High Court

In a huge relief to Delhi Public School (DPS) East, Gujarat High Court has quashed the Central Board of Secondary Education‘s decision to cancel its affiliation. The decision was taken after the officials had found out the school authorities allegedly submitted a fake-no objectionable certificate to CBSE to secure affiliation.

The court has also asked CBSE and District Primary Education Officer to initiate an inquiry as per the law. The court has also said the state govt to appoint an administrator to run the school.

The court took the decision after a plea was filed by the school and some parents against CBSE’s decision taken on December last year to cancel the affiliation of the school.

In 2019, the school came to limelight after self pro-claimed god-man Nithyananda’s Yogini Sarvajnapeetham, an ashram that had been setup on its premises. After the inquiry, it had been found that the school was functioning with 800 students in an illegal premise.

An education department report revealed that the school had submitted an application for an NOC, but was rejected. Despite the rejection, the school management allegedly went ahead and presented an NOC to the Central Board of Secondary Education and got affiliation for the school.

The court also said the school shall run until a fresh decision taken by CBSE on affiliation. The court also rejected the state govt’s demand to put stay on the order.

Poonam Kochitty: High time to pause and reflect

Poonam Kochitty

Today we are in the midst of unforeseen circumstances, where an ominous virus looms large in every home and in every person’s thoughts. A catastrophic pandemic has engulfed the entire planet. Enough has been written and circulated about the coronavirus. There’s an information overload, advice on precautions to be taken and staying safe. The only topic of discussion on whatsapp or the TV or conversations seems to be covid19. While some experience fear and panic, there are others exhibiting a blatant disregard to movement restrictions, jeopardizing the health and safety of others by their foolhardy behavior?

The world has literally come to a standstill. As flights and trains stand cancelled, shops, establishments offices and schools are ordered closed, and people are literally grounded in their homes, it’s time to pause and reflect.

Thanks to Greta Thunberg’s tirade against the world leaders in the wake of their inaction towards containing climate change and global warming, we too as educators have been trying to sensitize the kids about their responsibilities towards conservation of resources. We exhort them to plant trees, reduce their carbon footprint and save the environment and the planet. But does the planet need to be saved? In one masterstroke it has shown man, that it is way more powerful than we could ever imagine. The earth does not need man to preserve it. Nature has self healing abilities and also the power to put things right. Our insatiable greed, continuous exploitation and humiliating desecration of earth’s beauty have tested to its limits. It has struck with a vengeance and brought mankind to its knees.

As life slows down, we as humanity are forced to reflect. What is the meaning and purpose of life? Why are we here? Where have we gone wrong? Is life on earth going to come to an end as predicted by many in the past? Or are we at the cusp of a new beginning? A satyug, after a maha kalyug? The night is darkest before the break of dawn. Are we near that proverbial dawn of a new era while we battle with this darkness and death of millions across the globe? For those who tide through this catastrophe, will life and work move at a different pace? Will people become less selfish and more giving? Kinder and more compassionate? Time will tell.

As of now, Covid has thrown a huge challenge to the teaching community in particular. Working from home, training to teach online, keeping parents and students engaged, being more visible to parents while teaching, are going to test teachers to their limit. ‘Working from home’ may no longer seem an attractive proposition. Already many feel that working within the school was better. As we gear up for all this, for an indefinite period, teachers surely will develop more skills, they will have to become more creative, they will have to think on their feet and they will only gain from collaborating and sharing.

May we all come out stronger, smarter and more enriched from these trying times? Happy teaching and learning to my fellow educators.

(Ms Poonam Kochitty, Principal, Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Lucknow)
