There was a time when the state of the Indian education system was significantly dismal and bleak. Multiple issues ranging from an obsolete syllabus, lack of practical learning, shortage of quality educators, and so forth were forming the crux of it all. Everything was conventional and outdated. But, in the last couple of years, one could unexpectedly see educational efficacy evolve digitally with each passing day. E-learning acted as the most ideal catalyst that brought about an equitable approach to high-quality education. Not only did it provide unlimited teaching and learning opportunities, but improved student’s learning, participation and innovation tremendously.

Did you know 5.8M students enrolled in online courses in 2016? This is a 263% increase over the last twelve years, making India the third largest online learning market with 1.3 million learners right after the US and China. There is no denying that e-learning is gaining immense popularity in India by the day. It is bringing about a change into the lives of multiple Indians by transforming the Indian educational system, here’s how:

Advancement into the Hinterland: Breaking barriers is one thing, and the ability to consolidate education and training across geographical constraints is another. E-learning has penetrated into the Indian hinterland owing to the affordable high-speed Internet as well as access to smart-phones. Students are getting empowered to get quality resource and education, anytime, anywhere. Improved connectivity and digital payment access have further aided the concept of education for all.

Cost Effective and Time effective: There was a 175% increase in the cost of education from 2008 to 2014. This made the online space the most cost-effective place for learners to hone new skills, supplement for school learning, prepare for competitive exams or even take up non-academic subjects. Courses online are 53% cheaper than offline alternatives. Along with that ardent learners are also able to save ample time lost in travelling from one place to another. They can simply log on to their devices and leverage the benefits of e-learning no matter where they are.

Quality Education: Online learning is an apt platform to present a world-class learning experience to the ever-expanding student and workforce. There is no denying that each year a limited number of seats are available at leading universities. Many lose out on them as well as on the chance of getting quality education. However, online education has changed this phenomenon. Many online websites have opened up access to live and interactive, anywhere learning in collaboration with premier management schools. The faculty is best in class and the students gain knowledge from seasoned stalwarts across industries. Simple to use interface, virtual field trips, email, virtual labs, electronic textbooks, and free online resources are giving them excellent global educational experiences.

Personalised Learning: personalized e-learning enables learners to customize a variety of the elements involved in their education process. From modified schedules, drawing up lessons and activities to setting own goals, everything is as per the individual student’s needs.  This unique learning approach has transformed the educational system and helped provide individualized and differentiated instruction to each learner making the experience richer with improved learning results.

Hybrid channel Approach: Many e-learning centers have adopted an O2O strategy. It is an Online to Offline strategy whereby by roping in some of the best local coaching institutes, independent tutors and publishers, students receive a simulated experience in their learning. This strategy is a big deal for the educational system. As it ensures that every student struggling to get digital access or the best study material and preparation tips outside metro cities do not suffer.

E-learning is an extremely revolutionary concept that has the potential to disrupt the Indian education in a million ways. With each point showcasing more benefits than the other, they are together churning out a better learning environment for the learners and teachers. It is also vital to understand that the scope of online education is not just limited to online tuition alone. It has diversified and evolved into categories like Test preparation, Re-skilling and online certification, higher education and casual learning. These not only drive user engagement but also increase knowledge acquisition amongst learners. With a high demand in Government and bank jobs, a number of people are looking at adopting the test preparation scope in order to achieve success in competitive exams. This category is estimated to be the fastest growing category in 2021 growing at a CAGR of 64%. Re-skilling and certification have opened a plethora of opportunities for entrepreneurs and professionals. It has provided wings to their career aspirations, by enabling them to plan their future course of action and fast track their careers. Working executives keen on embracing change and enhance their vocation can opt for online certificate courses and programs that will enable them to acquire new skills.

There is no longer a barrier to learning. Continuous life-long learning is what the future of online learning holds for the educational system. As it gains acceptance amongst the learner base within the country the scope for innovation and expansion of product offerings also increases. Artificial intelligence and Big Data analytics will soon set forth in this sector to create massive educational digital footprints. While the former will make discovery of learning more accessible, suggestive and informative; the latter will drive purchase behaviour based on past usage of learning modules.

Overall there is no denying that e-learning has permeated nearly all levels of learning for students and professionals. And since it is no longer restricted to any sort of boundary, it is imperative to say that this platform is an essential tool that is transforming the Indian education system for good.

DU admissions 2018: Majority of seats vacant in off-campus colleges

Majority of seats vacant in off-campus colleges

With only one day left for admission to various colleges of Delhi University on the basis of second cutoff list, the off-campus colleges are struggling to fill their seats. More than 5,000 students took admission in the renowned colleges of DU after the second cut-off list; still many seats are vacant at the lesser known colleges.

Aditi Mahavidyalaya, located in Bawana, has more than three-fourths of its seats empty. “We have had about 126 admissions so far, and we have roughly 800 seats. Our college is situated on the outskirts of Delhi, so that can be one reason we haven’t seen many students coming. Compared to previous years, we’re seeing fewer admissions,” said Principal Mamata Sharma.

Acting principal of Swami Shraddhanand College, P V Khatri, said, “Out of more than 1,000 seats, only 200 have been filled up. Most seats in our science courses have been filled up, but majority of seats in BA Programme and B.Com Programme are still vacant. We expect maximum admissions to take place after the third cut-off list is released.”

At Lakshmi Bai College, around 350 admissions have taken place so far. “We have more than 1,000 seats. This is the situation after the second cut-off; usually admissions pick up after the third or fourth cut-off list. Since ours is not a campus college, we get admissions only after campus colleges are filled,” said principal Pratyush Vatsala.

At Janaki Devi Memorial College, only 350 of 990 seats have been filled. Principal Swati Pal said, “Admissions usually pick up after the second list, but it also depends on the course. In Sociology, seats are almost about to be filled.”

Many colleges have closed admissions after the seats have been filled, whereas many off-campus colleges are still awaiting the seats to be filled.

B-Schools face challenges in Digital Economy

Digital reputation has engraved existence of entities. Prominence and nature of B Schools are gauged through their online presence. A search engine create perceptions and add to perspectives of prospective students and recruiters, writes Dr Lakshmi Mohan, Director, ITM Business School, for Elets News Network (ENN).

The digital economy is undoubtedly governing the transformation of the world and human nature. This prompts B Schools to be innovative, the most capable engine for coping economic disruption. As our Prime Minister points out,” We have one mission and target, take the nation forward- digitally and economically”. With acceptance comes transformation and strategies intended to match up to the challenges of digital economy. Digital economy has given rise to digital reputation leading to branding or image construction across sectors including the education sector.

Digital reputation has engraved existence of entities. Prominence and nature of B Schools are gauged through their online presence. Search engines create perceptions and add to perspectives of prospective students and recruiters. Digital communication has brought nature of B Schools out in the open air. According to Pew Research Center, 91% of the people trust online search results. As there is trust in search results, maintaining and managing online reputation for B Schools has become crucial. The slightest stumble can lead to major debacles for a B School. Today students are in the virtual space and their selection of colleges is also based on digital hunt. The newspaper may have a day’s shelf value but what appears on the digital forefront seems eternal! It is no wonder that organisations are looking at digital experts to manage their reputation.

The digital economy leaves no room for hiding. It is good for B Schools to post information and events online in a strategic manner. They have a plethora of platforms available for posting but a wise choice is advisable for better traction and reaching out to the audience intended. Digital media is today a branding tool. Awareness about education provided by B Schools can be made available to students thus enabling them to make best choice of education provider. Schools are moving to paperless forms with the help of online application modes and digital payment gateways. The challenge lies for those schools that are not transitioning to the modern trends of being consumer centric.

B Schools today have to match with the speed of information flow that has heightened student expectations. When Sergey Brin categorically challenges Google to be the third half of the human brain, it is but a fact that you are left with a world of knowledge. Educators of today have to keep pace with this fast flow of information . Learning has gone beyond classroom walls and students are on an exploratory mode to select the best course for their career. Virtual learning space is fast gaining momentum and when education is available so easily, B Schools are worried about becoming redundant. At the same time there are B Schools that encourage students and faculty to take additional courses on MOOCS. While learning is assuming different dimensions, it is amusing to see gadgets and smart phones have replaced notebooks. Though what is worrisome is the WhatsApp language overpowering formal communication with slangs, shortcuts and abbreviations.

We cannot deny that digital economy has brought with it newer opportunities for students. The job opportunities have increased but with an increased demand for efficiency in skill of digitization. With new digital industrial technologies there are job opportunities in plenty, but education has to catch up with the rapid changes by implementing them in their curriculum. Digital engagement is evident in many B Schools, especially with regards to external communication through websites and social media activities. Companies are taking notice of B Schools that are showing their prominence on the digital platforms and vice versa. The challenge is to make them more goal focused, streamlined and professionally managed.

Pedagogical differentiation can be brought by digital interventions. For students in the present digital age, internal engagement digitally can make learning more fun. Blogging for instance can make reflective learning possible, videocasts or podcasts can be created by students and private social networks can encourage immersive learning. Digital era has also paved way for research in various areas and for researchers to communicate with one another. Ensuring ethical guidelines and respecting privacy rights is a challenge for B Schools. B Schools have to update their curriculum to the digital era by including new apt courses like Leadership in Digital Era, Behavioral Finance in Digital Era, Digital Era Legal Issues and also the impact of digital in various business functions.

Digital challenges are meant for organisations to grow. Every transformation brings with it pros and cons. If B Schools are able to leverage the best out of digitalization, it will surely benefit them, their students and the employee fraternity. It is important for organisations to look for a way to win through challenges and make best use of digitalization!

Centre to make board affiliation and geo tagging mandatory for madrasas

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) under its Scheme to Provide Quality Education in Madrasas (SPQEM) is planning to revamp madrasa education in the country by making it mandatory for these institutions to be affiliated to either madrasa boards or state boards.

According to MHRD sources, the States have submitted their proposals, which are being studied, and based on the available budget, the plan of madrasa education’s makeover will be taken forward.

“The SPQEM is aimed at bringing about qualitative improvement in madrasa education and enable students to attain standards of the national education system in formal subjects. The government is planning to make affiliation to the madrasa board or state school boards compulsory,” a source said.

The Government is also planning to map madrasas in the country based on the Global Positioning System. “For this, the HRD ministry is planning to make Unique Identification mandatory for madrasas to trace their physical location via GPS,” added the source.

Last year, MHRD asked madrasas covered under the SPQEM to provide their GPS locations. In cas of not doing so, the institutions have to wait for teachers’ payment.

The existing features of the scheme enable madrasas to strengthen capacities for teaching of the formal curriculum subjects like Science, Mathematics, Language, Social Studies etc through enhanced payment of teacher honorarium.
