Emphasizing the role of private universities in the Indian education system, Member of Parliament and Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr. Karan Singh called on for a massive expansion of universities.
“I do not think it is possible for government institutions alone, whether state or central, to meet the educational needs for our people. We need a massive expansion of universities- both public and private sectors. I think private sector has to pay an increasingly important role in the endeavour. BITS in a way is demonstrating as a model of what private sector can achieve,” he said while addressing the convocation ceremony of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani – Hyderabad Campus.
While referring to the UNESCO International Commission for Education in the 21st century, Dr. Singh shared four pillars of learning, “learning to know”, “learning to do”, “learning to live together” and “learning to be”.
651 graduates, 84 post graduates and 13 Ph.D. students were awarded degrees on the occasion. In addition, three students, Anupriya Gagneja, Pratyush Mahapatra and Shyam Krishna Shenoy were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals respectively for their outstanding academic achievement.
Presenting his annual report and sharing the future roadmap for the University, Vice Chancellor Prof. B.N Jain, said, “We aspire to be listed as one of India’s top research-led technical institutes by academic year 2020-21, both in India and Asia. While that may seem like a tall order, we have begun work on a new set of big-ticket imperatives under project “Mission 2015” that will enable our faculty and students together to excel in teaching, research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry engagement.”
Addressing the graduating students, he said, “I wish you all the very best in your lives. As you move forward in your life, do reflect upon the many contributions that your families, your teachers, and your communities have made to your lives.”
Sharing some key achievements for the Hyderabad campus, Director Prof. VS Rao, said, “As part of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship imperative of Mission 2015, SandBoxx, a prototyping lab was set up in the campus in May 2015. It is a multi-disciplinary platform to develop technologies in the domains of Internet of Things, Wearable Technologies and Consumer Electronics. The Hyderabad campus has also collaborated with Stanford University for a project titled “Mana Maali” targeting to reduce the mental stress among Indian University students. A unique technology “Lantern” is introduced to increase access to mental healthcare for students.”
Conveying his wishes to the graduating students, he said, “I congratulate the graduating students and wish them success in all their future endeavours. The degree awarded to you is a certificate of your academic qualification. However, I sincerely hope that the education provided to you on this campus will lay a strong foundation for lifelong learning so that you can face the challenges of life with confidence and determination. I am confident, as ambassadors of BITS Pilani, you will continue to strive in enhancing the reputation of your Alma Mater.”
BITS Pilani offers undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes in Science, Engineering, Pharmacy, Management and Social Sciences to over 12,000 students from its four campuses. During 2014-15, 2,878 students have graduated from BITS Pilani with an undergraduate or post-graduate degree.
MDI Gurgaon, a B-school had organised an induction ceremony for its Doctoral Programmes: Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) and Executive Fellow Programme in Management (EFPM). At the programme, Professor Sanjay Govind Dhande, member, BOG, MDI Gurgaon, threw light on the new chapter of the academic life that the students were embarking on.
In his address to students, he talked about the role of academic research in the growth and development of any business. Research is an essential part of any business that offers well-targeted products and services. It can be instrumental in defining a product mix for a business- for example from defining the mix of various FMCG products that a firm produce to different categories of in-patient beds that a hospital should have. Business decisions that are based on good market research can minimise risks and pay dividends and hence B-schools are turning more proactive in developing strategies to deliver their research services around what is relevant and in demand.
Prof. CP Shrimali, Director, MDI Gurgaon in his address to the students advise them not to limit themselves in the four walls of the classrooms. He encouraged the students to participate in debates, discussions, conferences and seminars for a 360-degree development.
The number of students in the 2015 batch is 21 doctoral students. The programmes are aimed at allowing the fellow researchers to create benchmarks and measure progress in order to be able to gauge the performance of any business.
All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has appointed Prof. Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabushe, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati as the Chairman.
In his earlier stint, he has served as Director, College of Engineering, Pune since 2006 on deputation from IIT, Guwahati. He has 29 years of teaching and research experience. Prof. Shasrabudhe graduated from BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli affiliated to Karnataka University with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and was a gold medalist. Thereafter, he obtained his M.E. and Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1982 and 1989.
Before joining IIT Guwahati as Associate Professor in 1995, he has also served as Lecturer and Assistant Professor at NERIST. Under this role at NERIST, he has taken several role and initiatives in IIT Guwahati and COEP for academic, curricular and co-curricular activities, research and good governance. He is also Chairman, Basic Scientific Research (BSR), Empowered Committee of UGC.
To promote e-learning in education system, Maharashtra government is set to give tablets to students of state-aided secondary schools. The cost of the project is estimat d to be Rs 2,250 crore. Currently the state has nearly 75 lakh students from 6 to 10 standard, about 15 lakh in each class.
As per the report, the government currently spends Rs250 crore per year on providing text books to the students in the secondary classes. The state education department is learning the concept of e-learning on tabs before finalising on the project. The department has met some private firms in respect to the project.
The government is taking keen steps to improve the quality of education in the State.
Concern over the education system, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said schools have been turned to factories to pass on same data from one generation to another generation. He feels that the education system is turning into a data transfer system.
He expressed his concern on how should education be imparted, what should be the content taught in schools, should be the focus of the school managment and the committee. There is a need to make the classes interesting for students to progress and this should be the part of education policy.
Present at the one day state level consultative meeting on the New Education Policy organised by SCERT in collaboration with NCERT, the state education minister Sisodia laid emphasis on the change in education policy.
The consultative meeting was attended by government school principals, teachers from education department of Jamia Milia Islamia and Delhi University and NGOs working in the sector.
In the meeting the themes of the New Education Policy was discussed, learning outcomes in elementary education, extending outreach of secondary and senior secondary education, strengthening of vocational education, reforming school examination systms, revamping teacher education for quality teachers and promotion of information and communication technology (ICT) in school and adult education.
On the fifth foundation day celebrations of the Bihar State Educational Infrastructure Development Nigam, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar raised his concern over the deteriorating phase of education.
He said that the poor quality of teaching in state is a matter of concern for the government. The state government is spending 25 per cent of its budget in education sector, but quality education still remained a challenge.
After inaugurating the 475 educational buildings constructed under various schemes in Patna, Kumar expressed that besides working on improving the quality of education, efforts are being made to work on each and every aspect associated with it. The state government was running training programme for teachers with assistance from World Bank.
Higher education institutes were also constructed in Panchayats to fecilitate higher education.
Under the provisions of the Right to education (RTE) Act 2009, the private schools are directed to give free uniform and books to students under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS). Following the mandate, Education Department has issued a strict directions to de-recognise schools whcih do not provide free books and uniforms.
The order directs schools to either comply or face the consequences. The circular sent by the department stated that if the schools are not in compliance with the direction, the process of de-recognition on account of violation of relevant provisions under the RTE Act shall be initiated.
The issue will be brought to the DDA for taking necessary action. Currently, there are 68,951 EWS students in Delhi out which 51,000 are studying in schools that do not provide uniforms and books for free.
Online Video analytics start-up, Vidooly has opened its office in Noida, which looks to foster collaboration and innovation, will also support Vidooly’s hiring plans to double its workforce in the next six months. The company is looking to hire data scientists and analysts and programmers. Vidooly recently received funding from Silicon Valley based investor, Bessemer Venture Partners (BVP).
Video consumptions have been witnessed as the megatrend which comprises an estimated 60 per cent plus of all data traffic on the Web. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, next only to Google. More than 300 hours of video is being uploaded on YouTube every minute, out of which 90 per cent of the videos generate less than 10,000 views in the first month. A lot of efforts have been put by content creators to bring good quality content but they find it difficult to target the right audience.

Bihar Governor and Chancellor of universities Keshari Nath Tripathi while awarding the degrees to 159 students of B R Ambedkar Bihar University at Amrapali Auditorium emphasised universities to impart moral education to students and make them realise the import of human values.
All elated to be the part of the event, he expressed on maintaining the glorious past of the university which has produced great patriots and scholars like first President of India Rajendra Prasad, J.B. Kriplani, and Ramdhari Singh. He said it is the responsibility of the new age generations and teachers to maintain the level of the university and take it to new heights on academic front.
He praised the University for organising seond convocation ceremony. Mridula Sinha, Governor of Goa present at the convocation ceremony has asked the students to pledge that they will not send their parents to old age homes and would also never break the bondage of marriage. She has also asked them to protect chastity of women and keep their surroundings clean.
