West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education introduces comprehensive curriculum revisions for class 12 students

West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has announced significant changes to the Higher Secondary curriculum for Class 12 students. These alterations will apply exclusively to students registering for the 2024-25 academic session. The marking scheme for health and physical education, music, and visual arts has been revamped among the revisions.

The theoretical segment of health and family education has been augmented from 40 to 70 marks, with practicals now accounting for 30 per cent of the total weightage. Similarly, both theory and practical music and visual arts components have been adjusted to 50 marks each.

Conversely, subjects such as Punjabi, Gujarati, and French have been discontinued due to low enrollment numbers. However, the WBCHSE has introduced multiple vocational subjects, including banking, financial services insurance, food processing, and telecom, to the Class 12 syllabus. Additionally, as part of the curriculum revamp, new subjects like applied artificial intelligence, cyber security, and science of well-being have been incorporated.

Further changes include the renaming of subjects and their respective codes. For instance, home management and family resource (HMFR) will now be referred to as human development and resource management (HDRM). Similarly, agronomy (AGNM) has been rebranded as agriculture (AGRI), while health and physical education (PHED) will retain its name but with a modified code, HPED.

This announcement follows WBCHSE’s recent implementation of a semester system for Class 11 students, set to commence from the 2024-25 academic session.
