JNU Rolls Out Indian Knowledge Course for All Disciplines, Including Engineering and Management

JNU

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi is going to launch an elective course on Indian Knowledge Traditions (IKT), aimed at students across disciplines, including engineering and management. This initiative seeks to integrate India’s rich intellectual heritage into modern education, offering insights into ancient systems of knowledge and their practical applications in contemporary problem-solving.

The elective will be available across all schools and centres within JNU, with departments customizing the curriculum to suit their specific academic focus. For example, engineering students might explore traditional engineering methods, while management students could study ancient economic systems, blending India’s past innovations with modern learning paradigms.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has been advocating for the inclusion of such courses to familiarise students with India’s cultural and intellectual legacy.

Topics Under Indian Knowledge Traditions

The course will cover a diverse range of subjects, including Vedic sciences, traditional medicine, ancient engineering practices, and philosophical literature. This aligns with the UGC’s recommendation to dedicate 5% of total undergraduate and postgraduate credits to Indian Knowledge Traditions.

Academic and Strategic Importance

Approved during a recent meeting, the course is expected to be rolled out in the next academic session, offering credits that enhance students’ academic experience. Schools within the university are currently providing inputs to finalize the syllabus.

JNU has been proactive in promoting traditional knowledge systems, recently establishing centres for Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist studies. With 13 schools, 38 specialized centres, and eight additional special centres, the university continues to expand its offerings by merging traditional wisdom with contemporary education.
