AP to have over INR 120 crore under the scholarship scheme

A huge of over INR 120 crore was released by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment as central assistance to the Government of Andhra Pradesh under the centrally sponsored scheme of Post-Matric Scholarship to students belonging to the Scheduled Castes. INR 120,41,64,000 have been released in total to state under the centrally sponsored scheme.

The anticipated expenditure during the year 2010-11 under this scheme is about INR 578 crore out of which, the committed liability of the State of Andhra Pradesh is about INR 258 crore. With the current release of INR120.41 crore to the state, Andhra Pradesh has got the entire due amount for the current financial year for implementation of the post matric scholarship scheme. The objective of the scheme is to provide financial assistance to the Scheduled Caste students studying at post matriculation or post-secondary stage to enable them to complete their education.

TBIS essay competition on a roll

Tata group recently launched the fifth edition of Tata Building India School Essay Competition, at national level. The contest has been commenced in eight labguages and is expected to receive entries from nearly 3 million students, from 5,200 schools across 150 city level competitions. Two new languages, Oriya and Kannada, are being included for the first time this year, adding to the already existing English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil and Marathi editions. The theme for this year's competition is based on reducing poverty in the country and young minds will be encouraged to express their thoughts on the solutions to this issue.

Starting from the key metro cities, this year's competition will be carried out across the country. This year, for the first time, young Tata Brands like Croma and Gateway Hotels are partnering with the essay competition. The Tata Building India School Essay Competition will be a two-phase activity in the participating schools. The first phase consists of the screening of an inspirational film as stimulus for the young minds, to get them thinking and to bring a greater focus to the subject. Following the screenings, students will be asked to write an essay on a topic of nation building. The schoolchildren are required to write the essay only once; this is the essay that will be judged at all the three levels.Entries for the competition are invited at two levels: junior (Std VI to VIII) and senior (Std IX to XII). The awardees who win the competition at the school level will receive certificates, trophies and special Tata Building India merchandise. The city winners and the runners-up will receive video cameras / digital cameras and will be felicitated at regional award ceremonies. The national winners will receive a laptop each as grand prize.

Switzerland Establishes Global Science & Technology Outpost in India for Research Cooperation

Dr Mauro Dell'Ambrogio, Switzerland's State Secretary for Education and Research, on Ocotber 7, 2010 announced the setting up of swissnex India, the Indian unit of swissnex, a global network of science and technology outposts. swissnex is a program run by Switzerland's State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER) in close cooperation with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). swissnex India will be the fifth such global centre after San Francisco, Boston, Shanghai and Singapore. It will be located in Bangalore, in the premises of the Consulate General of Switzerland, which is being set up. Swissnex India's goal is to fully leverage the potential of cooperation between Switzerland and India.

The centre's mission will be to create and maintain a dense network of contacts between universities, research institutions, industry and other organizations in India and Switzerland. It will provide a platform for Swiss and Indian organizations to connect, share knowledge and form partnerships in science, technology, culture, and innovation. swissnex India will also help structure, implement and support government-to-government bilateral research cooperation programs between Switzerland and India. The priority research areas of the current bilateral cooperation program are material sciences & nanotechnlogy, human health & medical sciences, information and communication technologies. The Indo-Swiss program of cooperation is a key component of the Swiss strategy for promoting scientific collaboration with India. Launching swissnex India, Dr Dell'Ambrogio, Switzerland's State Secretary for Education & Research, said, 'We are happy to announce the launch of swissnex India that will be located in Bangalore together with the Consulate General of Switzerland, which will also be established here shortly. swissnex India will help support and extend bilateral research co-operation between India and Switzerland, along with creating a strong network with universities, research institutions, industry and other organizations in both countries.'

Rural medical course mulled by health ministry

In order to support the practice of having trained medical professionals in villages, the union health ministry has expressed an interest to start a three year rural medical course. Health Secretary Sujatha Rao, explained that rural areas in the country have a demand and supply gap which can be overcome by presence of trained medical personnel.

The Bachelor in Rural Medicine and Surgery (BRMS) course proposed by the health ministry will be a three-year short-duration course that will give students a diploma, enabling them to practice in rural areas only. The health secretary said that since the course will take mostly local students, they will serve in their villages, thereby solving the problem of shortage of trained professionals. The health ministry is also contemplating making it mandatory for graduates who have received subsidized education to serve in rural areas for some time. The secretary, however, added that the new course would serve the immediate needs of villages.

Tunisia chosen by Microsoft to host Arab Innovative Education Forum

Microsoft has chosen Tunisia to host the works of the Arab Innovative Education Forum, to be held from October 4 to7. The platform is a representation of the final stage preceding the World Innovative Education Forum scheduled for next October 26-30 in Cape Town, South Africa. Teachers and officials from innovative schools, as well as representatives of schools, in addition to ICT experts from 9 countries, namely Tunisia, Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Sultanate of Oman will take part in the event. Placed under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, the forum seeks to honor the best integrated information and communication technology projects in the education field.

INR 3000 crore for upcoming 16 central varsities

Recently, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal for incurring an expenditure not exceeding INR 3,000 crore during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan Period for setting up of 13 new central universities. Three state universities are to be converted into central universities within this plan.

16 Central Universities were established in the various States by the Central Universities Act, 2009. While 13 of them are new Central Universities, three have been established by conversion of the erstwhileState Universities into Central Universities. This will increase access and enhance quality of higher education in the country.

Punjab plans to eliterate every student

The Punjab Government is to come up with 494 more new computer labs under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) project in Government and Govt. Aided schools in the state. The initiative aims to digitally literate every student of Punjab state. Besides, 3,564 more computer teachers would also be recruited in the schools. Punjab ICT Education Society (PICTES) had launched this ambitious computer learning programme for 6th to 12th classes in all upper primary and secondary schools the state in a phased manner. It was reported that three phases of the ICT education programme are running in line with the plan and in the forth phase the government would be facilitating 136 computer labs in the remaining government schools and 358 labs in government aided schools to impart computer literacy to students. It is anticipated that under the ICT project, 3,564 more computer teachers would be recruited for these labs which included 494 teachers for the new labs and 3070 teachers for existing government schools.

Edwards declared Nobel winner for Medicine

Robert Edwards, British researcher and the pioneer of in vitro fertilization, won this year's Nobel Prize for Medicine, it was announced in Stockholm on September 4, 2010. Some four million people have been born thanks to IVF since 1978, when Louise Brown became the first IVF baby, the Nobel Assembly said. The medicine prize is the first of the 2010 Nobel awards to be announced. The award ceremony is December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's (inventor of dynamite) death. Nobel, inventor of dynamite, endowed the prizes.

Huges and Venera partner to deliver easy, affordable education in India

Venera Technologies, a service provider of digital multimedia solutions and Hughes, a global provider of broadband satellite networks announced a partnership that is to facilitate Venera to offer its Virtual Classroom platform IeraTM for delivering online education using VSAT and Internet in Tier B and C cities through HughesNet Fusion centers in the country. Hughes's usage of IeraTM will enable aspirants from small towns in India to get an access to professional education from premium institutes without migrating to big cities, as a viable education solution.

Education Advertisements to be regulated by guidelines

Education sector topped the charts in print advertising this year. It will be required to follow certain advertising guidelines from October 2010.The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) will shortly release the guidelines approved by the ASCI board. Some of the institutes that advertise regularly over the said period include Lovely Professional University, Maharana Pratap Group of Institutions, Manav Rachna International University and Aakash Institute. The proposed guidelines bar the educational institutions from claiming that enrollment in the institution or programme will provide the student a temporary or permanent job, job promotions or salary increase, etc, unless the advertiser is able to substantiate and also assume full responsibility of the advertisement.

Additionally, advertisements shall not make claims regarding extent of the batch placed, highest or average compensation of the students placed, admissions of students to renowned educational institutes, and affiliation with a foreign institution, etc, unless they are substantiated with evidence. As per the proposed guidelines, an advertisement will not state or lead the public to believe that an institution or course or programme is recognised, authorised or accredited, unless the advertiser is able to substantiate with evidence. Guidelines also suggested that the name and logo, if any, of the affiliated institution, shall be in the same font size as that of the advertised institution or programme in all forms of visual media, and in case of audio media, such as radio or TV, the name of the affiliated institution must be stated.
