Tata scholarships for South African university

A prestigious scholarship programme announced in Johannesburg will see Tata Africa providing funding to allow postgraduate students at the University of the Witwatersrand to research projects for the benefit of citizens across the continent.

Raman Dhawan, managing director of Tata Africa, presented the awards to students in various fields whom he referred to as 'the future leaders of this country and continent.'

'The Tata Group has always believed in returning wealth to the society that it serves. Tata believes that no success or achievement in material terms is worthwhile unless it serves the needs or interests of the country and its people and is achieved by fair and honest means,' Dhawan said Monday.

Offering advice from his personal experience to the graduates, Dhawan urged them to resist corruption at all costs and to 'give back to society when you become hotshot executives.'

'Avoid any form of corruption and gain respect as leaders.'

Dhawan said this could be easily accomplished if the graduates followed the values that Tata firmly believed in – integrity, understanding, excellence, unity and responsibility.

This is the third year that Tata Africa has provided the scholarships, with 39 students at Witwatersrand University who are financially challenged and have a proven academic track record, having benefited so far.

Loyiso Nongxa, vice chancellor and principal, lauded the efforts of Indian companies to develop partnerships with academic institutions.

'I made two distinctive observations (during his recent rip to India) which speak directly to the establishment of these prestigious awards – the investment by corporations and the private sector into higher education and knowledge institutions and the emphasis on producing quality teaching, learning and research (academic excellence) despite socio-economic disparities.'

Rob Moore, deputy vice chancellor (Advancement and Partnerships), said the partnership between Tata Africa and the university represented a new trend in the field of corporate social investment, incorporating triple bottom line reporting – society, environment and profit.

In addition to the Tata Africa scholarships, Tata has donated a top-of-the-range off road vehicle for use in the Ndlela Research and Clinical Trials Unit, a major rural community health project run by the university's School of Public Health. It was established in 2006 to conduct clinical trials for the prevention and treatment of HIV and related diseases like tuberculosis in rural South Africa.

The university has enjoyed a strong relationship with Tata Consulting Services (an IT-focussed subsidiary) and negotiations are underway for it to partner Tata in an extensive programme to provide access to technology for marginalised communities.

UDcast delivers e-Learning network to universities in Oceania

UDcast, a global provider of enterprise network optimization and mobile television solutions, announced that it has delivered a network acceleration system to the universities in Papua New Guinea.

The network was been ordered by the Papua New Guinea Academic and Research Network, a consortium of private and state universities. The project was managed by Oceanic Broadband Solutions, a leading regional ISP and integrator of telecom solutions.

Papua New Guinea still lags with one of the lowest internet usage ratios in the world. While more then one out of five World citizens on average can access the Internet today, with some countries such US, Australia, New Zealand or Northern Europe exceeding the 70% rate, internet penetration is still as low as 2.8% among the 6 million citizens of Papua New Guinea, according to Internetworldstats.com.

The new Papua New Guinea Academic and Research Network has been built to enable students and scientists to access global internet services, online knowledge resources, remote processing power, as well as to conduct and attend lectures over broadband video conferencing.

So far, 21 ground sites have been equipped with secure broadband satellite connection. Each site features an UDcast's UDgateway that provides protocol acceleration, caching and security in conjunction with iDirect VSAT modems.

Tony Waters, Director of Oceanic Broadband, said that 'UDcast technology has been proven in Europe to be secure and optimized for VSAT, ensuring high throughput capability over the VPN tunnel. Our customer in Papua New Guinea additionally liked the features of the UDgateway appliance such as caching and SMTP relay to speed up their WAN access for the 300 to 600 student PC users per University.'

UDcast's UDgateway satellite appliances are currently deployed at several thousand sites around the world, enabling multiple application including e-learning, governmental networks, emergency systems, inter-banking transactions, green energy generation management, maritime communication and more.

'Satellite communications is the easiest and least expensive way to provide broadband access wherever there is no terrestrial internet infrastructure. Technological advancements such as IP network optimization, improve the capacity and build the business case for the continued growth of satellite services in many regions.' said Antoine Clerget, CEO and co-founder of UDcast.

IIM Ahmedabad to launch carbon finance course

After the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIML), it is now the turn of IIM Ahmedabad to launch a programme on environmental management strategies with special focus on carbon markets, a market in which India is now the second largest seller in the world.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM)-Ahmedabad will introduce the carbon finance course this academic year.

'The course is aimed at providing conceptual and practical understanding of the anthropogenic forces causing climate change, the global legal and institutional framework and mechanism to deal with it, and the dynamics underlying carbon finance,' P R Shukla, one of the course instructors said.

IIML is already offering a management development programme (MDP) on corporate environmental management and carbon markets. It had launched this course last year, aiming to sensitise professionals to various environmental issues and equip them with effective environmental management, officials said.

'The course, whose duration is three days, is meant for working executives only,' said Sushil Kumar, coordinator of the programme at IIML.

'Our course covers environmental policy and law, environmental impact assessment, carbon markets and emission trading and several other issues,' he added.

Going into more detail, the IIMA's forthcoming course on carbon finance has been divided into 14 sessions and will introduce the evolution of the global carbon market, the current state of international negotiations on climate change and developments following the Kyoto Protocol.

The three formal carbon finance instruments in Kyoto Protocol – the Joint implementation (JI Article 4), Clean Development Mechanism (CDM – Article 12) and Emissions Trading (ET – Article 17) – will be introduced.

Other carbon finance instruments and initiatives, such as those being implemented by the World Bank, will also be discussed.

'The course has a global focus with significant India centric economics and finance and practical case studies. Besides the financial instruments for carbon mitigation, the course also includes discussions on financial services to deal with the adverse impacts of climate change, such as climate change insurance and emergent adaptation funds,' said Shukla.

Besides the financial instruments for carbon mitigation, the course also includes discussions on financial services to deal with the adverse impact of climate change, such as climate change insurance and emergent adaptation funds.

With many European countries eyeing the Chinese and the Indian carbon markets, the IIM-A expects a good turnout of foreign students for the course registration, which started in August.

'The term 'Carbon Finance' is used, in practice as well as in the course title, as a surrogate for 'Climate Change Finance' to cover wide ranging financial responses to mitigate and adapt to climate change,' Shukla said.

Responding to climate change is a global venture, governed by international legal, regulatory and institutional framework, presently agreed under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The market can be used for efficient economic response to climate change and like all environmental markets; the global 'Carbon Market' is a creation of regulations.

The dynamics of the global carbon market results from institutions, policies, instruments and the specific measures agreed periodically by the nations that are a party to the UNFCCC.

The IITs also enjoy full cost budgetary support. The IITs remain successful so long as these amenities continue.'

The minister also mentioned that in the past few years, the IITs have been ranked as the top educational institutions in India and Asia by national and international magazines. 'This is indeed a matter of great pride.'

S G Dhande, director of IIT Kanpur and IIT Rajasthan, and Higher Education Secretary R.P. Agarwal were among those present on the occasion.

India currently has seven IITs. Besides IIT Rajasthan, five more will open during the current academic session.
