Mindanao (Philippines) school executives awaiting cyber education

The teachers from Minando schools of Philippines are waiting for the implementation of the Cyber Education Project (CEP) of the Department of Education to improve the quality of education, especially in remote areas.

City Schools Division superintendent Estrella Lariosa stated that school has already started to venture into ICT through the Project Alert without the help of Cyber-Education. But CEP will really help in addressing the problem of the lack of education facilities in the country. Schools are already launching the e-Library project. The regional information officer of the DepEd in Caraga . Bhutan, Isidro Biol stated that cyber education would be the best alternative to the perennial shortage of books and classrooms in the poverty-stricken region. 

NCERT checks literacy levels of girls via teachers training program

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), India is organising training programme for teachers to focus on empowerment of these girl children. NCERT is keen to tackle with the low literacy level among girls from the scheduled tribes.

The Department of Women's Studies at NCERT has organised the programme for “Teacher Educators from Rural Areas on Action Research Related to Gender Issues with Focus on Upliftment of ST Girls” to sensitise educationists on issues concerning education and status of girls from the ST categories. Currently, around 32 educators of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) from the States of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand are taking undergoing for training since September 5 to October 1, 2007. The teacher educators will also be trained on how to carry out research, analyse and interpret data. Apart from the internal faculty at NCERT, officials from the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs and resource persons from various national bodies have been roped in for the workshop.

Media Lab Asia brings education to the doorsteps of tribals

Media Lab Asia is bringing vocational training programme at the doorsteps of the tribals of Maharastra (India).

The Media Labs Asia in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) like Vigyan Ashram and Bhatke Vimukta Vikas Pratishthan to train over 100 children of de-notified nomadic tribes in Maharashtra. Media Labs Asia looks at the application of Information Communication and Technology for the upliftment of the backward sections of the country. At the click of a button, the child sees in front of him a virtual market, where he transacts with virtual vendor to buy vegetables, or fruits against some amount of virtual money. This simple exercise teaches him basic arithmetic like substraction, addition etc. The Media Lab Asia uses local language in an interactive video and relevant animation to make children more interactive within their surroundings.

Computers help UNL bring technology to rural Nebraska

    The University of Nebraska is bringing the university's Business Information Technology (BIT) program at the Husker Harvest Days site. The BIT program educates Nebraskans about e-commerce and giving them the technological tools needed to allow rural residents to better compete in global society.

    The mobile computer lab contains about 16 high-speed computers and has its own electrical generation system. UNL Extension educators hold classes in e-Commerce, e-Government, e-Knowledge and e-Agriculture, along with instructional classes in computer operation and software. Students in the mobile computer lab can learn technical skills such as using the Internet in marketing and buying and selling of goods and services, conducting government business on the computer and using global positioning satellites and yield monitors. They can also work on basic skills such as navigating the Internet, sending e-mails and downloading information. The mobile lab has already visited around 60 communities. According to the survey of the US Department of Agriculture, about 66 percent of Nebraska farms had computer access, 44 percent used the computer for farm business, 55 percent had access to the Internet, 8 percent purchased inputs on the Internet, and 11 percent conducted marketing activities on the Internet.

    Nokia ties up with SRM University of Chennai (India)

    Mobile handset maker Nokia has tied up with SRM University to offer a fully sponsored specialised B.Tech degree programmes for its employees at its Sri Perumbudur factory. This initiative is expected to encourage employees with diplomas to acquire engineering degrees.

    DCES’ teachers utilize computers for teaching

    The teachers of Digos Central Elementary School (DCES) and Ramon Magsaysay Elementary School (RMES) of Philippines are teaching students via computers.

    The school will start a program, which utilizes computers to educate rates one to six pupils enrolled in the so-called “smart classes. Lorelie Gorgonio, information and technology school supervisor at the city scools division stated that teachers are fining easy to teach students from Internet. In Davao City, Feliciano Tamondong, regional education supervisor for Southern Mindanao, expressed reservations on how the government will implement the nationwide cyber education project. The DepEd has already signed an MoU with the Tsinghua University in China and the Philippine government but still nothing is finalised. The schools to be included for the digital learning network are 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th class municipalities.

    MP (India) Govt sets up school for good governance

    The Madhya Pradesh Government has set up a School for Good Governance and Policy Analysis review state policies and its effect on a target group.

    The school will work as an autonomous institution and it would be run by the governing body headed by Chief Minister. The State cabinet took the decision in June, 2007 and fixed INR 5 crore as the non-plan for 2007-08 for its establishment. The school will function as a `think tank' in the field of good governance in international and domestic context and will analyse problems regarding governance. It will also prepare an action plan and assist in implementation of the same. The school will compile and expand the outstanding activities and skills and `e-governance' programmes.

    ITAN calls for Computer in School Task Force

    Nigerian firm Zinox Partners Intel, Microsoft to Empower Students

    Nigerian ICT company Zinox Technologies Limited, is partnering with Intel Corp and Microsoft Corp, to empower 100,000 students in the country through a new initiative called the Zinox Students' Computer Ownership Project (Z-SCOP).

    The project is aimed at promoting the use of computers by Nigerian students at all levels. From primary to postgraduate level, including graduates serving in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.The initiative enhances knowledge acquisition at all levels of the nation's education system. Z-SCOP was targeting in the first phase to empower, at least 100,000 students before the end of 2007. Providing them with laptops or desktops at greatly discounted prices and zero interest rate with full warranty. Zinox is ready to roll out 70,000 laptops and 30,000 desktops within the initiative that would grow to 500,000 students in the next one year. The initiative is expected to turn 1 million Nigerian students into computer literate.
