IIT Kharagpur signs MoU with Samsung India to setup digital academy

IIT-Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung India to set up a digital academy within its campus.

Samsung IndiaThe institute’s Computer Science and Engineering department would host the Samsung Innovation Lab. Under the MoU, the students will be trained on the Internet of Things (IoT) through Tizen-based operating systems, commonly used by the company for its mobile phones and home appliances.

IoT is a network of computing devices embedded in objects of everyday use for storage and exchange of information. The training would help students acquire industry-relevant skills and “become job ready”, an IIT-KGP statement said today.

Samsung, under its corporate social initiative, has set up the lab to bridge the digital divide in the country by imparting skills to students on cutting-edge technology, the statement added.

Through this partnership with IIT-KGP, the academy planned to train over 100 students in the next three years, it added.

Samsung Research & Development Institute-Delhi managing director YoungKi Byun said, “Samsung is happy to partner with IIT-Kharagpur to help students leverage the growing digital technology market, especially Internet of things (IoT), the future of connectivity”.

IIT-KGP Director Partha Pratim Chakrabarti said, “The partnership will help our students in developing their skills on the emerging areas of IoT and Artificial Intelligence.”

The course would be taught over 14 weeks through classroom lectures, assignments, lab room sessions, self-study and mini projects. “This (IoT) lab will enable our students to have hands-on experience with the Tizen operating system as well as facilitate research and app development on IoT platforms,” the head of the department of Computer Science and Engineering, Sudeshna Sarkar, said.

University of Birmingham introduces new language course for India’s future engineers

The University of Birmingham is going to start an online free training course for engineering students across India to help them improve their technical English language skills.

According to a press release by the university in this regard, the three-week Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) will be based on real first-year modules at the university. The course – Electrical Engineering: Sensing, Powering and Controlling will support students in mastering many of the key terms and concepts in Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering.

The MOOC is aimed to attract direct entry students planning to study Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering at the university. At the same time, the course content will also help the students planning to take admission in the first year of Electronics and Electrical Engineering streams.

The three-week course will commence runs from November 13 and has been developed by the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. It is led by Tim Jackson, Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering.

“This is a great opportunity for students whose first language is not English to brush up their language skills and get to grips with the key terms and concepts associated with engineering. The course will be delivered in English to help students to gradually develop their language skills,” Jackson said.

Bihar cabinet okays reservation for differently-able people

The Bihar Cabinet has approved to give reservations to differently-able people in government jobs and educational institutions.

According to Cabinet Secretariat Department Special Secretary Upendra Nath Pandey, the State cabinet approves the provision during a meeting presided by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The new policy has been brought in accordance with the Persons With Disabilities Act, 2016, he said.

To empower ‘Divyangjan’ as envisaged in the Act, the cabinet also gave its nod for establishing a state advisory board, Pandey said. The board with secretaries as its members will also comprise representatives from different districts of the State. Other than this, the two members from the State Legislative Assembly and one from the state legislative Council will also be members of the board, Pandey added.

The cabinet also decided to pay allowances to state government employees as per revised rates, Pandey said. The decision comes just a week ahead of the Diwali festivities.

“NBFC100 Tech Summit” to commence in Mumbai on Thursday

InfoComm India 2017 sets benchmark for visitors, exhibitors

Cementing its reputation as the premier exhibition platform for professional audio visual (Pro-AV) and experiential communications technologies in India, the InfoComm India 2017 witnessed heavy footfall which reached a five-year high.  

The annual show has registered an upward trend since its inception in 2013.

On 26-28 September 2017, total 8,162 unique visitors attended the exhibition in Mumbai to check out emerging technologies and network with key stakeholders , representing a 16 percent increase over last year’s footfall.

The show, which was themed “See the Future of Networked Communications”, is the only dedicated trade fair for Pro-AV and experiential communications technologies in India.

Moreover, significant engagement was witnessed in the educational component of InfoComm India 2017, where experts shared current trends and in-depth market insights in various sessions, registering a 66 percent jump from the previous year.  In comparison to 2,100 participants in 2016, over 3,500 people attended this year’s program in 66 sessions.

Birad Yagnik, Trustee and Curator of the Mahatma Gandhi Digital Museum, was one of nearly 100 hosted buyers invited by the organisers. Yagnik said, “I was here a couple of years ago, and I wasn’t expecting so many people this time. The huge turnout was a surprise. I think it’s a very strong representation and it also shows that we are really moving towards Digital India.”

A regular visitor, Lyju Thomas, the Technical Lead at Raymond Ltd, was impressed by the depth and breadth of technologies showcased at the event. He said, “This year I had an opportunity to see some very interesting and interactive technologies. One of the best parts of InfoComm India is that it is updated with the latest and upcoming technologies in the Pro-AV segment, and you get an opportunity to interact with several OEM’s at one platform.”

The show had booths featuring over 200 exhibitors from more than 20 countries, of whom 52 were first-time exhibitors. Furthermore, over 94 new-to-India products were launched at the show. The exhibitors included Delta, Epson, Extron Electronics, Harman, Kramer Electronics and Panasonic India.

Harman Worldwide has participated in InfoComm India since the inception of the show. Shaun Robinson, Vice President, Corporate Education and Government Solutions at the company, said, “The show allows us to demonstrate our new solutions that we’re bringing across to the markets in the world. I saw a great mix of people, including AV consultants, system integrators, and end customers.  We are able to get a wide variety of feedback from those different perspectives, and we take these feedback straight to our product development team, who are still finishing some of these products.”

Akhil, Applications Engineer from Godrej India, said, “I have been visiting the show for the last three years. InfoComm India is a great platform which affords us the rare opportunity to meet our OEM partners. This is where we can find out more about new emerging technologies, new products that they have, and discuss marketing, sales and service strategies.”

This year’s edition was also marked by the strengthening of ties between InfoComm India and local industry and government associations.  Joining the nine associations which have already been working with InfoComm India, notable first-time collaborators include established industry associations such as All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG ) and Federation of All India Association (FAIITA).

Schools will be assessed for environmental best practices in Ras Al Khaimah

A new grading system for schools across Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) has been introduced to encourage environmentally sustainable practices.

The RAK schools will be assessed as per the new ‘Green Rating’ system in the 2017-18 academic year.

The initiative is a joint scheme being launched by the Ras Al Khaimah Waste Management Agency and the Ras Al Khaimah Education Zone. RAKWMA is a subsidiary of the Public Works Department.

Sumaya Al Hareb, Director, the Ras Al Khaimah Education Zone, said, “Students and teachers across the Emirate will be introduced to the evaluation system.”

The  ‘Green Rating’ system aims to encourage sustainable environmental practices and spread awareness on environmental issues for development of proactive solutions to tackle the issues.

A school’s Green Rating can be improved through implementing best practices and participating in environmental activities such as clean-up campaigns. Training and volunteering in this aspect will also be rewarded.

Schools will be felicitated  annually for their achievements.

J&K government launches Aadhaar enrolment drive for over 14 lakh students

To make the admission procedure smoother and more transparent, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has launched a drive for Aadhaar enrollment of over 14 lakh students in six districts of the State.

J&K education minister Altaf Bukhari has inaugurated an enrolment centre at the Kothi Bagh Girls Higher Secondary School of Srinagar district for students up to higher secondary level.

Describing about the project, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Project Director Abdul Rashid War, who is also the registrar for Aadhaar enrolment of school children, said around 14 lakh students in the state are yet to be enrolled for the biometric identity.

According to Abdul Rashid War, Under phase-1 of the project, Aadhaar enrolment centres have been set in six districts of the state including Shopian, Pulwama, Anantnag, Dodha, Kishtwar and Samba.

“The rest of the districts will be covered in Phase-2 for which the necessary equipment, machinery and other measures are being undertaken,” he added.

According to the officials, teachers and their families who have not yet availed the Aadhaar facility will also be covered through the enrolment process.

Technology is the key to modern education: UAE Foreign Minister

New technologies are key to modern education in order to stay abreast of development trends, said Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, UAE.

“The world outside school has now changed. The technology has taken the centre stage in education system,” said Sheikh Abdullah, adding that teachers must focus on technologies to make children learn faster.

“The goal of a new education system now is to make children innovative and creative,”  he said.

Sheikh Abdullah further said amid the rapid changes in the information technology, teaching should embrace innovation to make classroom more interesting and creative.

Cisco to open ‘first-of-its-kind’ innovation centre in Dubai

Cisco Systems will open an “innovation and experience” centre in Dubai. 

Speaking at an event in Dubai, David Meads, Vice President, Middle East and Africa said that the innovation centre will be the first-of-its-kind worldwide, combining innovation capability with a customer experience centre.

Meads further said that the UAE and Saudi Arabia are two of the 16 countries in which Cisco is currently undertaking a country digital acceleration (CDA) strategies. For this purpose, the company has partnered with the government, industry and academia.

The company has also established customer experience centres in Europe, the United States and in the Asia-Pacific region. 

The innovation centre serves as a hub to showcase what is possible with digital transformation and IoT, build solutions with partners and startups; Invest and partner with startups, accelerators, and universities.
